I used to live in NYC and still visit everymonth or so.

For the vast majority of the time I take a cab, the cabbies are fair, knowledgeable, efficient and sometimes downright pleasant. A helluva lot more than I would be doing that for a living for the measly wages.


/caveat 1: Besides airports, I rarely go anywhere outside of Manhattan

/caveat 2: Please note I didn't mention hygiene. C'mon fellas, it's America: Ivory and Right Guard are your friends.

Every taxi I've ridden in Washington DC was piloted by someone not born in the States... on top of that, almost all of them had Bachelor's degrees in a tech field.

I for one don't buy those 16% native-born and 13% percent women figures. I've taken hundreds of cabs in NYC over the last few years, and counted exactly four obviously native-born cab drivers, two white and two black, and exactly two women. Sure, I might not be able to completely tell a native-born driver with a foreign-sounding accent from a true foreigner, but there can't be that many of those. And even in NYC I can tell who's a woman most of the time.

Also, I think cab drivers' overall hygiene isn't too bad. Most of the terrible smells I've encountered in cabs have been from people tossing on gallons of perfume in the back seat. I know I wouldn't be able to stand my natural stench in a confined space for 12 hours every day.

And not once has a cab driver called me "mac" or "pal" or "buddy" and told me his life story. Fortunately.
