the 25+ 26 state..... ;)

2004-06-28 07:38:13 AM
how about 3,142nd county?

2004-06-28 07:53:30 AM
Liberal minority with an alliance with the Bloc.

2004-06-28 08:36:50 AM
Conservative majority, or a conservative minority so large (150 seats or so) that a few Liberals cross the floor to give them a majority.

(one can hope...)

2004-06-28 08:41:08 AM
BTW -- We wouldn't make Canada the 51st state; we would just have North Dakota annex them.

2004-06-28 09:02:02 AM
That's a lotta hopin' PeaSouper

2004-06-28 09:27:22 AM
Bloc majority.

2004-06-28 09:28:51 AM
today is national let's-kick-out-the-liberals-day. hurrah!

2004-06-28 09:29:59 AM
PeaSouper, no dice on that one. No way Conservatives can form a majority, or close to it. The Conservatives are way too extreme for most Canadians, no matter how fed up with they are with the Liberals.

2004-06-28 09:30:11 AM
Don't forget to vote.

2004-06-28 09:30:59 AM
For a minute there I thought it said "feral election".

Which would be about right, for Canada.

2004-06-28 09:31:57 AM
I voted LIBERAL, in Alberta, so my vote has gone byebye. Hopefully the ballot has gotten there by now.

prediction: Tories & Grits both lack a majority. Grits combine with Bloc (or NDP possibly) to form minority government.

2004-06-28 09:32:16 AM
i am not gonna vote

2004-06-28 09:32:57 AM
Marijuanna minority vs Bloc would rule.

2004-06-28 09:33:09 AM
Yes, get out there and vote. I voted this morning (NDP) and there sure was a lot of grey hair there.

Liberal Minority with the NDP holding the balance.

2004-06-28 09:33:16 AM
The thought of those rascist, repressive Conservative knuckledraggers getting any power is enough to make even me go out and vote.
Unfortunately I just moved from Montreal to Toronto and am not on a voters list.
Harper looks just evil.

2004-06-28 09:33:34 AM
I already cast my vote (early vote), for the Conservatives, against the Liberals (get the fark out of my country's wallet), and against Gilles Duceppe (my MP)

2004-06-28 09:33:47 AM
Anyone know if Harper is a Christian fundie? I've always had the impression that he is, but he's done a hell of a job hiding it during the campaign.

/Christian fundies scare me

2004-06-28 09:33:50 AM
The important thing here is to remember: What would Jesus Do? What would George W. Bush prefer?

/shameless, pathedic trolling

The Toronto Star came out with a really thorough opinion poll over the weekend. Apparently, it involved the largest population sample ever used for an election poll. Anyway, it shows the Liberals coming out with a minority win. I think they had about 130 seats or so.

For the record, I would have seriously considered voting PC if the Progressive Conservatives still existed. But they don't. And I'm not comfortable giving my vote to this new, even more right wing, conservative party.

trapped-in-CH

If anything, it'll be the Bloc+NDP. I think they're the only two that don't hate each other.

Kinda hoping for a conservative government, but I don't think it's going to happen.

2004-06-28 09:35:26 AM
those rascist, repressive Conservative knuckledraggers

Beautiful irony...

No, wait, disgusting farkin' irony.

2004-06-28 09:35:27 AM
Crimminy! First old Mulroney is trotted out for the Reagan funeral now we give Canada the vote?!?!?

Uppity beaver pelters!

2004-06-28 09:36:05 AM
In other news, they have elections in Canada.

Actually, I knew that -- but why in the middle of the summer when people are on vacation? Or is it still winter there?

2004-06-28 09:36:51 AM
Biffman All you need to vote is a picture ID and a utility bill (or some bill with your address on it) No, go vote my friend.

Alex Chilton

He seems to say stuff like "That's my personal opinion, but I won't be pushing for it.".

Voting Liberal in one of the only ridings that is safe in Quebec for them. As much as I am mad at the Liberals for the scandals I just can't vote for Harper, he is too right wing. I would like there to be a real alternative in Quebec, it's either Liberal or Bloc.

2004-06-28 09:38:40 AM
Arrg, the choices are farking grim this year. Both the so-called liberals and conservatives (do those words really mean anything anymore?) are Tony Blair style American ass-kissing lapdogs.

IMO all Canadians need to read this document.

At this perilous moment in history, the same principle applies at home: Canadian security depends on our ability to maintain meaningful sovereignty from the United States. Being inside the U.S. security fortress isn't a missile shield, it's a missile magnet. -- Naomi Klein

2004-06-28 09:39:00 AM
Advance ballots were up 60% from last time... so it looks like it'll be a good turnout.

2004-06-28 09:39:14 AM
51st State? Why would we want to join up with one of the more messed up countries in the world? Why in God's name would we want to associtate ourselves with Dub-ya? At least in our elections whomever wins the most seats will be in power, not whomever can rig the election in the slickest way.

~Vote GREEN party!

2004-06-28 09:39:23 AM
I'll be holding my nose and voting Liberal if only because I don't trust Harper. The fact that ultra-conservative Alberta premier Ralph Klein ~doesn't~ trust Harper really tells me something... (note: Although not my first choice, I could live with Klein or Mike Harris as PM, believe it or not)

I heard a good comedian talk about how crappy our options are:

"You can't vote Liberal because they'll tax and spend...you can't vote Conservative since they'll cut everything to the bone and support big business... and you can't vote for the NDP because then they might win!".

Note to American Farkers: NDP (New Democratic Party) is our most left-wing socialist party, union centred and very politically correct. They exist mainly as a protest vote.

2004-06-28 09:39:33 AM
Canada votes?

/kidding

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA lame

Seriously, get out and vote. Otherwise you can't complain about the state of affairs, and we know how much people love to complain.

It doesn't matter who I vote for, my home riding and my school riding are both Liberal strongholds. I'd either be cementing their victory or a fool to vote otherwise.

Harper...ehhh...maybe if he wasn't into tripling Canada's military budget or whatever. We know where that money is coming from.

2004-06-28 09:39:58 AM
Most Canadians would rather go to war than become the "51st state", believe me.

2004-06-28 09:40:04 AM
biffman just take your driver's licence and a bill with your name on it and your current address, that's all you need. No excuse not to vote.

2004-06-28 09:40:04 AM
Throwing my vote away this year - voting for the green party.

are you saying Libs + Bloc + NDP? cause I don't think the Bloc and NDP will have enough between them to form a stable gov't. What is the scheme on that? I can't even remember my canadian election procedures from school. So sad...

I myself would prefer a minority gov't, with the Tories in the lead. Not much chance of it, though. Scaremongering is too strong against them.

A projected 75% turnout of voters, yet only 25% of the 20-sumptins will bother.

Weird that.

2004-06-28 09:40:57 AM
Silly media. The election's not till November.

2004-06-28 09:41:47 AM
I'm in the same boat Spin Doc. The new Conservative party is, to me, the old Alliance party with a new logo.

Even Clark came out and said he was scared of the new "Conservatives".

/Voting Liberal because my only other option is Bloc in my riding.

2004-06-28 09:42:09 AM
Why would anyone vote for backward rights, aka conservative is beyond me. Why dont you just vote for the communist party?

I vote NDP today.

2004-06-28 09:42:41 AM
One thing I don't get about the "Conservative minority" theory -- if Harper doesn't get enough seats that he can play some backroom games and get a couple of Liberals (and there are some Liberals who are in line with the Conservatives on "moral" issues) to cross the floor and give them a majority, how the heck do you end up with a conservative minority.

As far as I can tell, neither the Bloc or the NDP are going to be able to prop up the Tories, as both lean hard to the left, while Harper wants to take things as far right as you can in Canada.

Meanwhile, Martin has been sounding like the most liberal Liberal EVER in this country, in an effort to make sure that he'll be attractive to get votes of confidence backed by Smilin' Jack and/or Gilles The Vampire.

for the record, I voted liberal not because I dislike the tories or mistrust harper (most common reason so far in this thread) but because my family knows the liberal candidate.

however the tory candidate is very well respected.

2004-06-28 09:44:20 AM
The bottom line is that none of the politicians are trustworthy. Just look at what happened following the election in Ontario. Promises to cut or keep taxes the same in the Liberal's platform. Then they win and put in a new sneaky extra healthcare tax!!! The time is coming where we'll be paying more in taxes than we take home :(

2004-06-28 09:45:10 AM
Ubergrendle NDP isn't the most left wing, what about the Marxist-Leninist party, and the Communist party?

2004-06-28 09:45:13 AM
Why dont you just vote for the communist party?

I vote NDP today.

Brilliant!

Too tight to tell. Either a Liberal or Conservative minority, that goes without saying. Balance to be held by the NDP and/or the BQ. Deal-making and back-stabbing galore to follow, expect another election within two years.

Best minority combination: Liberal/NDP - these guys can work together, with the NDP providing a conscience and the Liberals roping in the NDP's loonier ideas.

Worst minority combination: Conservative/BQ - Conservatives say "to hell with Quebec", BQ say "to hell with the rest of Canada". Together, they'll just mark off each others' territory, a la "I Love Lucy", and go to town tearing the country apart with little or no interference.

Spoiler: Both the Bloc and the NDP hold the balance-tipping number of seats. Both have different agendas, and have a natural affinity for different ruling parties.
