well.. there we go.. we lose the last growth industry we have: keeping old people alive. Health and Insurance are the only industries we have in Indiana.

So now we give away our ability to do cutting-edge research by making decisions like this and by having very muddy and hypocritical ethical views.

The Bush administration has been lying about science related things full time for a while. Stupid? yes. surprising? No. Science doesn't work by being used to justify one point of view.

And you know the "expert" scientists we send out now will all be batshiat-crazy fundamentalists. If you loved Bush's faith-based "science," imagine how thankful the rest of the world will be!

My thoughts exactly, This About That... can we make it to November?

This is getting ridiculous.

2004-06-26 01:41:55 AM
I sure hope so, nodog. These nuts have until January to do more damage.

2004-06-26 01:43:45 AM
Oh, man, This...

You just depressed me. I'm so focused on November that I forgot the asshat still got to rule until January.

Sad, sad, sad.

I want to hear this defended by a Bush supporter. Just to hear their spin on the reasoning behind this.

2004-06-26 03:27:58 AM
It looks like the Bush supporters just don't have the balls to step up to the plate and "discuss" this (if you can call most of the crap flinging diiscussion).

/ Anyone but Bush...and Nader, since that's really just another vote for Bush.

2004-06-26 06:35:56 AM
What a jackass. Though not a surprise. My guess it's WHO's position on the use of contraception in the developing world.

Who'd a thunk it, coming from a guy that uses THE RAPTURE to guide his middle east policy. After all, Jesus won't return unless the Palestinians are thoroughly flushed from the Holy Land.

The WHO did a study on secondhand smoke and cancer in the late 90s. They wanted to prove positive correlation. Not only did they not prove positve correlation, they showed a slight negative correlation; evidently exposure to secondhand smoke has a slight immune-building effect. (Slight. Don't go all spazz on me here.)

They shelved the report--buried it. Killed it. We'd never know about it if someone at WHO hadn't leaked the prelim to the media.

So tell me again how Bush is the bad guy for controlling our interaction with this bunch of agenda-driven Euroweenie Socialist fops?

2004-06-26 01:26:30 AM This About That

True; after Kerry gets his ass kicked maybe all the Seminar Posters will slink back off to MoveOn.org to lick the bacon grease off Michael Moore and leave the rest of us in peace.

Every time I start to wonder if I should vote for Bush, I see the libbies out practicing the same politics of personal destruction that was waged on Ronald Reagan. Keep screeching, libbles. Even if I don't vote "for" Bush, he'll get my vote as a way of voting against YOU. Karl Rove sucks ass, but you jokers (and your pathetic candidate) suck far worse.

Archvillain I think you'd have to dress up like Jesus and come to their home to let them know that you specifically said, thousands of years ago, not to kill people. Period. EVEN IF THEY ARE MUSLIM! Maybe we could get some Seattle rocker to do a "Jesus Gig". I know you think the fundies won't buy it, but I think they would...as easy as a child does Santa. If you think about it, They're both equally as ridiculous and require the same baffling ignorance.

Someone please ask Bush to stay away from science.

2004-06-26 06:39:59 AM
Uhm.

I dont know if theyve gone to this length before, but all US governments abuse science. They'll be happy to sponser a study, then ignore the results during legislation. Even if it means continuing an expensive war on their own people (read: WoD)

This is one of those epidemic gvt issues, not a bushism.

C'mon, people! Is this anything that we should really be arguing over? Starting a political flamewar about? Since when do we fight so abusively over a silly political appointee?

I think you liberal wack-jobs are missing the point: Science exists to serve the State.

We can't allow these self-appointed "scientists" to claim some special right to undermine the important business and politics of our Homeland.

For example, the "scientists" are whining about a little harmless mercury, which causes a only a handful of birth defects every year -- and in doing so, they are destroying the tuna industry, an industry that pays its executives a lot of money, and contributes to the Republican National Committee.

Fortunately, industry representatives were able to override the "scientists" and quash their recommendations, so the Federal government is still telling pregnant women to eat several servings of tuna a month. A few babies might die or be born stupid, but isn't that better than letting both the tuna industry and the coal power plants that produce the mercury suffer a loss of profits?

It's the same with coal pollution or lead paint. Let's be honest, people who can afford to vary their diets and pay for medical care aren't really hurt that much. The effects are worst for the poor and the minorities, and we have plenty more of those -- and they don't vote anyway.

We must unite to reject this fraudulent "Jewish Science" (as Der Fuhrer accurately termed it) and realize that protecting corporate profits is worth breaking a few eggs: One Homeland, One People, One Bush!

2004-06-26 06:59:12 AM kakaPoo,

Way to make an ethnic slur out of nothing of the kind, dipshiat. You said I would be left behind by evolution--future tense; I observed that you already had been--past tense. But, way to be overly sensitive and see insults that weren't actually proffered. Good liberal!

We speak English for hundreds of miles in all directions here where I live; I've no need to learn other languages, nor inclination to make it a hobby. If that changes, I will adjust accordingly.

Spain, hey? I'm guessing that we won't take voting instructions from terrorists over here--oh and BTW, if anyone believes al Qaeda when they say they want Bush re-elected they're just plain slow. Anyway, you folks have pretty much joined the French as surrender monkeys.

First, the WHO is a corrupt organization. Second, The US government, (that's you and me, or your parents and me, kids) who pay the largest chunk of the WHO budget. We get very little in return. Now, for the clean drinking water/vacination/nutrition other worthy goals, the WHO has done well in it's part, but tens if not hundreds of thousands of extremely needy people have been deprived of aid appropriated to them by corrupt WHO officials. The large problem is the WHO is unaccountable to anyone, a broad and open scientific community CANNOT exist without safeguards, be it privately through asociations, or through government regulated bodies. We end up here with well meaning pinhead scientists who continue to research esoteric scientific goals, worthy of pure science, but the monies used are denying the world's needy of food/water/medicine. Look, if it takes US$100,000 to produce a near useless except for agitation study on secondhand smoke reelated death projections, and saves no lives, it a bad endeavour while that money can be used to feed a village for a year. Yet the WHO repeatedly wastes money, repeatedly funds studies that are nothing more than resume enhancers for the scientists.

On the other side, the corruption throughout the WHO supply line is staggering, well documented, and entrenched. The AIDS scam in Sub-Saharan Africa is unbelievable in scope, countries mark AIDS as cause of death for every death that has any remotely AIDS related symptom involved. Died of cough, AIDS, died of Pnuemonia, AIDS. Died of viral infection, AIDS. Why? The more numbers of AIDS patients the WHO produces the bigger the gravy train. An entire generation of scientific researchers have been riding this train, using it to increase AIDS funding domestically and abroad, using it to push money directly into the coffers of corrupt African despots. You'd cry if you saw the luxury some NGO's live in in Africa. (Not denying AIDS is a major problem in Africa)

Well the WHO is a gravy train, by reducing the ability for the organization to produce studies that do nothing but help the polemics of media health advocates and give material for NGO's to agitate and lobby with, by reducing the access to the scientific reputation of American scientific researchers, then the money saved will go towards feeding people in the WHO programs.

NO one is trying to lower WHO funding, Bush promised US$1 Billion to Africa for disease/malnuntrition and education programs, much of this money will flow through UN organizations. These organizations need to be cleaned of the corruption, the ineffectual research bureaucracy, and the current leadership.

And those idiots here who think this is a set back for the open scientific community, well, who's going to fill the positions if Americans don't, and will the openess of the WHO change? No, America's scientific community will be givena setback, but the shakeout will remove the weak links in the system. The international scientific community will benefit greatly, the extra money from WHO consulting will go far in many countries, the researchers will be able to build resumes and learn how to handle the political ropes of international science.

(Oh, and Bush needs to win Florida, where Big Sugar has been battling against the WHO's anti-obeisty/anti-processed-sugar campaign)

2004-06-26 07:27:33 AM
A Bush appointee must now give permission before government scientists are allowed to work with the World Health Organization

The representative from the Office of Global Health Affairs:

2004-06-26 07:46:39 AM
NOTHING this administration does is worthy of your criticisms, dog. NOTHING. EVER.

Bush/Cheney '04! "Changing the tone to crony fascism!"

2004-06-26 07:55:13 AM
WHO is a corrupt organization

So isn't the Bush Administration.

2004-06-26 07:55:16 AM
RamblingKey: "...the WHO is a gravy train, by reducing the ability for the organization to produce studies that do nothing but help the polemics of media health advocates and give material for NGO's to agitate and lobby with..."

I have to admit, I don't know much about the politics of WHO. But I also don't understand how a political body (whether it be Democrat- or Republican-led) choosing the scientists that WHO works with will put any dent in the polemic environment that you claim exists in WHO.

I mean, wouldn't putting an administration-appointed scientist on a panel just lend to the political turmoil that supposedly already exists?

"Why? The more numbers of AIDS patients the WHO produces the bigger the gravy train. An entire generation of scientific researchers have been riding this train, using it to increase AIDS funding domestically and abroad, using it to push money directly into the coffers of corrupt African despots. You'd cry if you saw the luxury some NGO's live in in Africa."

And again, if it is so widely known that the WHO is so corrupt and politically-driven, and it's policies are simply putting money into the pockets of African despots, then why are we supporting them by promising the organization another $1 Billion in funding? I'd think that Bush, of all people, would not support such obvious oppression of the good peoples of Africa. In fact, he'd be the man I'd most expect to take the money and run.

2004-06-26 07:56:45 AM
Let me add two further things. First if Kerry is elected, he WON'T change this directive, and this will be used as a bludgeon against industries that don't support the Democrat line.

Second:

the WHO has stepped on many toes, and hasn't backed down or shown deference to Bush's core constituency, but still, expect the apointee to be a hands-off administrator, this is all for show.

2004-06-26 07:56:46 AM
Now, what'll be interesting is to see if Kerry actually reverses this, or just uses the existing decision to appoint left-leaning scientists instead of right-leaning ones. No fan of Bush, but this seems like something that would benefit whoever is in office -- Republican, Democrat, third-party (HAH!) -- and therefore is unlikely to be heard of again no matter who wins in November.

Out of curiosity, has the WHO acknowledged the research on acquiring stem cells without using embryos when freaking out about funding cuts for their embryo-based stem cell research? The WHO is already politicized, don't kid yourselves. It's just a matter of whose agenda they follow.
