YES! Hunter S. Thompson is my personal hero!
2002-01-17 09:43:14 AM
2002-01-17 09:44:13 AM
Reporting football scores is soo beneath Thompson's talent. Check out The Rum Diary....what a great read.
2002-01-17 09:46:09 AM
Thompson started off as a sports writer and has always loved doing it (or loathed, one in the same for him).
HST for president.
2002-01-17 09:47:18 AM
Thompson is so dried up ... sad really.
2002-01-17 09:48:42 AM
Wow... he's still alive?
2002-01-17 09:49:48 AM
'Cool' works, maybe 'Hero' would be better...
2002-01-17 09:49:55 AM
Nonsuch: you have angered my gods.
2002-01-17 09:50:25 AM
Hunter S.Thompson is a god among men.
2002-01-17 09:50:58 AM
Don't need much to be your personal hero, huh?
He's a drug-addled fool living off of one halfway decent book. I wasn't even aware that he knew what a football is, let alone that he follows the game. Either way, f' em. It only took the Ravens 60 minutes to totally destroy a decent Miami team in their home stadium. 131 yards total for Miami's offense? Something like that?
It's happening again folks. Prepare to go down Pittsburgh.
Ravens 16 Steelers 6
And if Hunter baby doesn't want to watch it, maybe he can get drunk (big stretch) and go shoot some cats or something.
2002-01-17 09:56:38 AM
Blackbloc: I'm not saying he wasn't great in his time, but that time was quite a few years ago. I think the Great Shark Hunt was his last great book (haven't read Rum Diaries, but then again he actually wrote it 30 years ago so it probably is pretty good).
2002-01-17 09:57:37 AM
I thought the Rum Diary sucked, but what do I know.....actually, I will say that any book that has Jimmy Buffett singing it's praises on the inside flap should probably be avoided.
2002-01-17 10:01:39 AM
Nonsuch: I suppose you've got a point there.... but what else is he gonna do? If nothing else, he can still make some rather kickass similes.
2002-01-17 10:04:57 AM
HST ushered in a new brand of journalism. His books are okay, his articles, that's where his talent shines. I think he's an acquired taste. The good doctor taught me a lot about how to write and write well. Funny, he's from a well to do family in Kentucky and acts like he was raised by crazed wolves.
2002-01-17 10:08:57 AM
When I lived in Boulder, some friends and I took it upon ourselves to go to Hunter Thompson house/estate in Colorado, to our dismay the trip was halted when we arrived at his "compound" to see signs posted that EXPLOSIVES were on the grounds, which abruptly halted our trek to his doorstep...But what the fark, it was worth the (acid) trip.

Well stated! Except you forgot that the Steeler's kicker will probably miss one of those field goals.

Yosarian, you're an ass. You don't even know what you're talking about. FYI, it really wasn't Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that kicked off his career but Hells Angels, he could live off the proceeds of that book alone, F & L was just something he did for fun to relieve the stress of writing a serious article about the murder of a Mexican activist. He was a sports writer long before he was a novelist. He covered the Raiders in their hey-day. Was close to John Madden. He followed football long before you were sucking on your mothers tit. Get a clue
2002-01-17 10:22:40 AM
Gah! Watching Baltimore is pathetic. They're the worse thing that could happen to the NFL right now. They really do bring back the old acronymn No Fun League. If I wanted low scoring, slow moving stalemates I'll turn on ESPN 12 and watch soccer (actually, now that I think about it I believe that soccer is more entertaining that Raven football anyday, hell I'd watch a world cup match over a Raven game).
Their defense is good, but they've been SMASHED in some games this year, and I'm willing to bet that Pittsburgh will do it to them this week. And I will be pleased!
As far as Thompson's work. I've really enjoyed the books of his that I've read. Funny stuff. And he knows a LOT about sports. I think that's all he does now.
2002-01-17 10:23:43 AM
Man there sure are some delusional people in this thread... Steelers will win this week. And let me say that I would rather see any team win the Superbowl than the Ravens. They are a bunch of arrogant pukes, not to mention criminals. I hated them from the moment they stole our Browns rivalry. It's revenge time. And I'm Myron Cope... on Sports.

Yosarian - TWIT

ONE halfway decent book? You probably think it's the Rum Diary.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was fun, The great Shark Hunt was amazing. Hells Angels too...

There's no Catch-22 here... He's freakin'great.
2002-01-17 10:27:19 AM
Yosarian, your name is supposed to have two S('s) in it i.e. Yossarian.

Oh yeah, Steelers gonna whup your heathen ass.
2002-01-17 10:33:49 AM
Yosarian, at least *try* to save the ignorant judgements for people you know something about ("I wasn't even aware that he knew what a football is, let alone that he follows the game.")
2002-01-17 10:48:34 AM
Steinbeck was a great writer. Vonnegut is a great writer. Thompson wouldn't make a pimple on a good writers' arse. He's a one trick pony. I have to wonder about anybody who thinks he is great. Mildly amusing. Not great.
As far as the game Sunday, we shall see, huh? Road team has won the last 6 games between these 2. Steelers are haveing an excellent year. Congrats. Let's just see if we can end it for them. That would be sweet! All the pressures' on Pitt. Did they get rid of Charlie Brown the kicker yet?
2002-01-17 10:48:42 AM
The Ravens didn't really deserve the success they had last year. Go Steelers.

..and Bears!
2002-01-17 10:50:28 AM
Don't know why, but for some reason the thought of Dick Cheney on speed brought to mind....

2002-01-17 10:50:46 AM
But, doesn't this apply to watching all American Football games?
2002-01-17 10:50:56 AM
I love HST. Some people are just unwilling to look beneath the drug-addled exterior and see what he really is and is saying...
2002-01-17 10:51:52 AM
Who the fark is hunter s thompson? and from under what rock did he crawl? He is absolute jack-ass, and probably the only intelligent thing he said in the whole article would have to be: "The Ravens are evil and I fear them."

Oh I take it back...I like this one also: "but a single boss Raven(RAY LEWIS) will attack a whole gang of crows(STEELERS) and rip the lungs out of its leaders(faggot-ass CORDELL & BETTIS).

Steelers blow, and their fans swallow.
2002-01-17 10:53:32 AM
I have to wonder how much HST Yosarian has actually read? Hell's Angels, The Rum Diary, and Fear and Loathing are all pretty different books, both in terms of content and style. One trick pony?
2002-01-17 10:56:13 AM
This is the most intelligent thing he wrote: Watching the Baltimore Ravens play football is like watching scum freeze on the eyeballs of a jackass.

Go Browns! (oops)
2002-01-17 11:02:19 AM
Oh and one more thing...

[image from too old to be available]

Something you Pittsburgh fans will NEVER see this year.
2002-01-17 11:04:11 AM
What, the guy behind the trophy?
2002-01-17 11:04:45 AM
"Sublimaze: This is the most intelligent thing he wrote: Watching the Baltimore Ravens play football is like watching scum freeze on the eyeballs of a jackass." You would probably know what he is referring to, being a Brown's fan and all. Just kiddig. Put that beer bottle down. And what a great, poetic analogy that is. Is that some of his best work?
2002-01-17 11:05:20 AM
HST still has it. Awesome stuff.
2002-01-17 11:15:53 AM
...remove your mouth from the teet of Modell. come sunday, the stillers shall expose the ravens for the fluke, the disease, the pieces of shiat that they really are.

hope to see you at the stadium in the 'burgh. we'll follow the advice of siragusa and 'take care of business on our own'.

wear purple.
i dare you.
2002-01-17 11:17:08 AM
Sublimaze, what are you, 12? Grow up. Do you hear me bad mouthing your fans?
2002-01-17 11:20:24 AM
The pro-sporting team in a major metropolitan area near me is is MUCH better than the pro-sporting team in a major metropolitan area near you!
2002-01-17 11:31:06 AM
At his age (both chrono & especially "lived" years), I'm just thankful the guy's still around at all. I'll even forgive him the Buffett connection... and yes, the guy's been writing about sports off and on as long he's been writing. His first work with Ralph Steadman was a piece on the Kentucky Derby (for Sports Illustrated, I think) tying in with the fact that he grew up in Louisville.
2002-01-17 11:33:30 AM

You are correct. We will not see that overrated lb holding up the Lombardi trophy. We will see him in handcuffs
2002-01-17 11:35:47 AM
As a young male with prematurely thinning hair, I thank HST for making baldness cool.
2002-01-17 11:38:08 AM
HST's detractors have given us cause to suspect their literary acumen. He Was a Crook is one of the greatest obituaries ever written.
2002-01-17 11:42:31 AM
HST is the goods and all, but I still prefer PJ O'Rourke:

"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences."
2002-01-17 11:43:13 AM
Yes, the Ravens were a fluke last season (like the Rams the previous season?). All they did was win 11 in a row, and allow 1, count 'em, 1 touchdown in their PO & SB run, while scoring more points than all of their opponents. What a bunch of lucky slouches. That's called domination. How many points did Miami score Sunday? Three? Any touchdowns? Nah. Yet somehow the Ravens were undeserving......uh huh. What'd the fins star RB get for the game? Six yards was it?
But I feel the love. And that makes it all the sweeter. Insults from Ravens haters = compliments from intelligent fans. I mean even if for whatever reason you hate a team, a rational person still has to acknowledge what that hated team does well.
2002-01-17 11:43:42 AM
The Raven is a queer and dangerous bird,

ummm.... not that there's anything wrong with that.
2002-01-17 11:49:57 AM
Yosarian, are you a Raven fan? Poor guy, HST made fun of your team and now you're crying.

"Well, HST sucks, so there"

Go ahead and say this a few times if it makes you feel better, or you could just do some name dropping of prestigious writers. This will surely impress a few junior high school students into thinking you know about writing.

By the way, you have yet to say which of his books is the trick of his pony. If you say "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", I want you to know we are talking about BOOKS, not MOVIES. OK.
2002-01-17 11:52:31 AM
Odd, there is a MadMonk and a Rasputun here.
2002-01-17 11:53:32 AM
I'm a Ravens fan, but watching them is insanely painful. Of course I'll root for the Ravens, but I may find myself turning the game off. I don't think we have what it takes this time around to beat Pittsburg. Ravens have talked too much trash, especially about Bettis (Sharper should be shot for his comments). Steelers will be way to pumped for this game. We won't win it.

Steelers 21
Ravens 16

That is all.

-Got Spider??

Pittsburgh has a good team except one huge problem. They have the worst kicker in the history of the nfl. They will have to totally abandon the kicking game and go for 2 point conversions and go for it on all 4th downs. That will give them a chance against the ravens. Otherwise they will lose.
2002-01-17 12:02:06 PM
I am here to offer my somewhat uneducated opinion. As a woman I feel that I shouldn't even utter a word when it comes to discussion of football however you are ganging up on my boy sub and my team ... I'll admit at first I just liked the colors, purple looks good with my complexion, but after spending one bitter cold Saturday night behind the most obnoxious beer guzzling inbreeding whoot and hollering yellow towel waving white trash b*tch I have ever come in contact with something became clear. The Ravens fans have class something that would never go as close to Ohio as Pittsburgh. Steelers fans are practical ... the gold towels not only show their team spirit but can wipe the cum from their sister's chin at the celebration party ... I said the Raven's fans have class ... I am from Philly ;) And if that trophy ends up in PA I assure you it will be carried over in the hands of an Eagle.
2002-01-17 12:05:27 PM
The Raiders and Steelers are classic Super Bowl teams. That's why boring old farks like me want to see them in there. I mean who the fark are the "Baltimore Ravens?" Or the "St. Louis Rams?" Or the "Tennessee Titans?" In any decent world, the Browns would be in Cleveland, the Rams in LA, and the Oilers in Houston, with Bum Philips and Snake and Earl Campbell at center stage. That was football, and it wasn't supposed to change, not this much. Football fans aren't exactly revolutionaries. They are looking for something to be loyal to, and who can even say "fan loyalty" with a straight face in an age when owners frequently pack whole teams into U-Hauls and flee to other cities in the dead of night? If it's all about up-and-coming markets and lifestyle and tax breaks and the affluent demographic, then what is football but accountancy? It used to be fun.

That's why the Steelers and Raiders should be in the Super Bowl.
