Of course, if they do it to make money, why would they try to do a good job......

Moron.

Since when did Atheism and not believing in an afterlife become joined at the hip? You can be an atheist (not believing in a god) and still believe there is some form of existence after this; they are not mutually exclusive.

Left wing atheists are the same as right wing evangelicals. You have to adhere militantly to their viewpoints in order to be considered one of them.

Hey, We missourians could kick Canada's ass. Sorry if I offend anyone, but we do have the stealth bomber fleet, we do have a few combat training sites, we do have nuclear missles, so I think we could put up a pretty good fight.

move along, nothing to see here...

Our government can hardly manage the DMV, why on Earth would you want to place your life in their hands?

Are you trying to say we should privatize the military?

Geotpf, all your complaints could be fixed if the ancient voting system the US uses now would be abolished and changed to a better proportional system, something Canada uses, and more recently Italy went back to after trying the US' system

No, leave the oil fields.

And the opium fields.

Ummm, I'd like to second that. Atheists seem to value life on earth a hell of alot more. See, 'cause we don't beleive in an afterlife like GWB and the numerous suicide bombers in he middle east.

It's easy to justify killing if you think you're doing it for god.

Those people are just misguided fanatics. If you read the Bible or the Koran you would see neither God would appreciate those type of actions. Please don't give religion, and on a bigger scale, spirituality, a bad name just because some people have claimed to be on the side of God in justifying their greed

Chi Town:

You're brain-washed brother. If this didn't work in other countries you'd just have to take my word for it. We supposedly live in a democracy. If the health care system is not up to snuff the incumbants would get booted.

Is it an infingement on my rights that we spend 300 billion a year on our military budget when 60 million would suffice?

I'd gladly give up my money for social spending over military spending an corporate welfare.

Do I have to remind you what happened in California when energy was de-regulated (orchestrated blackouts by Enron). The regulated counties didn't lose power.

Are you a libertarian?

What about roads? Do we need those? What about law enforcement? Prisons? Schools? Energy? Do we need those things? Should it be every man for himself?

Libertarianism is so flawed.

I may be late rolling in on this one, but here's the bottom line with Canada's military:

We don't have an extensive military because we don't need one. We spend our money on health care and education (well, primarily, anyways). Nobody's itching to invade Canada because Canada hasn't done anything to anybody. Canada's military presence in the world is that of peacekeepers. Who hates a peacekeeper?

ChiTownJack

Man, I LOVE socialized healthcare. It benefits...oh, I'd say 95% of the Canadian public!

2004-06-17 06:48:58 PM
I'm not sure I want universal healthcare. I don't like what's been done with universal food, universal income, universal military, or universal roads, among others.

You can't privatize the military because some entity in a free society has to have a monopoly on the use of force. Otherwise you just have competing gangs vying for power etc. The military is actually one of the only proper government instituions. They are charged with the job to protect individual rights, even though Kerry and Bush exist for the opposite purpose.

If you meant to type 60 billion instead of 60 million then you're dumb.

If you meant 60 million and not 60 billion then you're retarded.

With all due apologies for my anal retentive ways, may I respectfully suggest that the English language generally adheres to the rule that we place "I before E except after C." I have no problem with your posts, but I've read the whole thing and if I read "beleive" one more time, my head will "asplode." It's believe. Okay, my rant is over, I'm sorry.

I do see major differences between Bush and Kerry, particularly in foreign policy, where Kerry's solution to Iraq involves only pushing for more international cooperation (which Bush is already doing, resulting in UN approval of the interim government) and putting the UN in charge. I'll gladly accept legitimate international help anywhere it would help, but I don't trust the UN to be solely in charge.

First off, after Saddam fell from power, they pulled out of Iraq at the first sign of trouble: a single attack on their Iraqi HQ, which resulted in part because they refused protection offered by US troops, thinking the presense of American soldiers would make them targets. The attack happened anyway, and instead of asking for more help, they bailed. How can we put them fully in charge of security?

Second, considering the mess that was the Oil-For-Food program, I don't trust the UN pencil-pushers to deal effectively with Iraq's money, which needs to be handled at least marginally well if the country is to succeed.

I've taken issue with many of Bush's actions in foreign policy, but Kerry's alternative strategy is largely a me-too of Bush, and the differences are to his own discredit.

That said, having read many of the comments and seeing many of the pics preceding my comment, the following action seems wise:

Vader out.

You don't have an extensive military because you don't need one is exactly right. You share with the United States the world's largest border (an unprotected one at that), not to mention similar (not the same) culture. The difference is WE were the ones who got stuck with keeping an eye out on the Soviet Union during the Cold War. WE were the ones who stationed troops next to the Warsaw Pact countries while the governments and people of Western Europe became spoiled and ungrateful. We were the ones who shouldered the burden so that the French could sit in their cafe's after their 35-hour work-week is over and talk about how much they hate North Africans and despise those racist Americans. If we didn't have a military presence, a large military presence, in Europe, then the Soviets would have rolled through and the French, Germans, Spanish, Italians etc. would all be speaking Russian right now.

/rant off.
//No I didn't call anyone a cheese-eating surrender monkey
///Yes I'm kind of bitter
////Yes it was still worth it, even if they are ungrateful

No i'm not a libertarian.

As far as democracy goes you are incorrect. America is not based on mob rule and majority vote. It is based on the recognition of indiviual rights.

Also i disagree with your standard that if something "works" in justifies the violation of individual rights. Socialized healthcare doesn't work. If their was a private system in place somewhere you would see that it is hands down better.

Do you want your healthcare to be as good as say the educational system in America. The FDA should be proof enough of how government retards progress in medicine. Telling me i'm brainwashed is not an argument. Also saying that you can elecct people is not an argument. Health care is a life a death situation for some people and waiting four years to vote for 1 of 2 welfare statists is not going to liberate them from a state controlled healthcare system.

If we didn't spend what we did on our military, then NATO would almost be a joke, and there would be basically no way for the UN to enforce its own SC resolutions. If the international community needs to lay the smackdown on someone (let's use the 1991 Gulf War for instance) they don't ask Canada or France to carry most of the load. They ask the United States.

Oh, we fought the gulf war for France and Canada? I forgot we use our military to help other countries. I thought it was so US corporations could do unregulated business in third world countries.

Chi-Town:
First off, you are a member of society. You live in a democratic republic. What part of the constitution outlaws socialized health care? What other government programs are illegal?

Nothing will change if Kerry is elected? Does that mean if Kerry wins, Bush and Cheney will still be running the country? Because, if they weren't anymore, well that would be a change, I think.

Thanks MorrisBird.

Kerry - "I voted for the 67 billion before I voted against it."

Translation - "I was a complete jackass before today, even more than yesterday, but not quite as much of the jackass that I'll be tomorrow."

Kerry - "I love my wife"

Translation - "My wife was a disgusting vomit monster before today, even more than the green oozing infected pus boil she is today, but not quite as much as the maggot-puking acne skank she'll become tomorrow."
