I wonder if this would classify as an unintentional denial of service attack?

I have a question. It might strike you as an ignorant one, but i really dont know anything about it...
Why does Bandwidth have a price? Why is bandwidth limited?

K 2001-12-04 09:56:44 AM
we need more boobies.

Robot Ninja: 'cause it can be. There is only so much bandwidth, the suppliers divide up how much they have into portions in accordance with the $perUser/overhead ratio. If a person is using more than they are allotted, then in theory they are intruding on bandwidth that could otherwise be bought by someone else. Did that make any sense? My coffee just isn't doing it this morning.

Crap, didn't see this in time... where are the pics now?

lbo 2001-12-04 02:56:30 PM
bandwidth costs money because it is a limited resource. It is also a shared resource, so that's why when someone gets a lot of hits, it usually means that everyone else's service gets crappy.

In theory, that is why DSL is better than a cable modem. Cable modems have shared bandwith amongst your neighbors, while DSL customers have a dedicated line to the phone company. So "in theory" if someone in your cable modem neighboorhood were running a porn site, your cable modem wouldn't be as fast because of the extra traffic.

Of course, all my friends have cable and their sh!t is always faster than my DSL, but that's what I get for using Pacific Bell.

That was one of the best b00bies links ever. It was worth it.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that bandwidth does cost money. When xylog was being "Farked" by the "fark effect" I hosted the pictures with my provider who was able to handle the tidal wave of hits. In 12 hours over 5 gigs was served up, just for some booby pics which never really showed any boobies (hey the pics were great anyways.) The provider I am with (alxhost.com) charges me $5 per gig that is over my limit.

Yes, bandwidth costs. Will I do this again? No, unless they are real nice boobies ;)

CIA Mole 2001-12-05 12:04:16 AM
To followup on my own posting: $5 per gig is dirt cheap but I like "fixed expenses" as opposed to "variable expenses", makes for much easier budget balancing. Though I bring in a decent salary, I have three kids, so yes, an extra $5 charge on my bill does screw with should "Billy" get vitamins this month or should "John" get his antibiotics?
