meh... This "internet" thing is just a passing fade. Don't bother yourselves with these "browsers".

Solzhenisin 2004-01-16 12:11:40 AM
Mozilla's cool. I use it about 30% of the time. I use Opera about 20% of the time. But, I still use IE for 50% of my browsing.

I often have sites that work better in IE (because they're not standard compliant) open in an IE window, and other stuff open using tabbed browsing in either Mozilla or Opera.

When it comes to buying online, I switch to IE because I've had both Opera and Mozilla crash on me during purchases in the past.

I love having the choice to try alternatives, and I'll be installing this new Mozilla release and using it.

Much love to the alternative browser development community. Keep it up. :-)

But why doesn't my dog want steak? It ussually seems to.

I'm too lazy to change browsers.

Ooh! More importantly, looks like Firebird .7 is out.

Arcadum 2004-01-16 12:32:46 AM
Mozilla FireBird and the click to play Flash plugin is my favorite feature.

Have You Met Miss Jones 2004-01-16 12:35:08 AM
I seem to have problems with Mozilla or Firebird locking up or making one window inoperable while others sort of flub around. IE rarely if ever crashes on me... so I say why complicate my already relatively complicated life?

/Not a sheep, just doesn't fix non-broken things.

RolloTomasi2002 2004-01-16 12:37:54 AM
As long as I already use a pop-up blocker, and don't mind multiple windows for muliple browsing pages, why do I need to switch from IE6?

Solzhenisin 2004-01-16 12:46:13 AM
RolloTomasi2002

You don't need to give up IE, just try Mozilla. They can operate at the same time. I have a dual monitor setup and often have both IE and Mozilla open at the same time in different windows. I love Mozilla for searching because I can open all the new search results in tabs great for comparing stuff (and pr0n browsing). Then I do regular stuff in the IE browser in monitor 2. You dont need to give up one to enjoy the other.

Firebird .7 has been out a while. Look for .8 in a few days (hopefully).

All of you fringe elements using IE 4-6+ I recomend implementing the Google tool bar.

RolloTomasi2002 2004-01-16 12:55:22 AM
Solzhenisin: I also use dual display - main monitor contains IE browser, and the laptop monitor contains Outlook, IM programs, & everything else.

Does Mozilla display pages differently? Faster?

elkman 2004-01-16 01:15:00 AM
One reason why I love Mozilla: It doesn't have IE's security vulnerability of browser parasites. (At least none that I know of, anyway.) Why IE ever implemented "browser helper objects" that could really fark up your browser is beyond me.

Sure, there are little incompatibilities here and there, but for 99% of the browsing I do, Mozilla works just great.

Solzhenisin 2004-01-16 01:29:11 AM

Many pages are faster. Some don't render well (the ones where the "designer" didn't adhere to HTML standards). But, I like the interface and customizability much more than IE. I just use IE for stuff the alternative browsers dont do well.

It doesnt hurt to try. Both Mozilla and Opera are quite stable and fun to try. They dont take over your PC or anything. In other words, there is nothing to fear. If you dont like, then just delete.

agamoto 2004-01-16 01:41:37 AM
IE 6, google toolbar, and the anti-ad hosts file, and all is good.

Logweasel 2004-01-16 01:57:01 AM
Do all of the pics still have placeholders until they load? That's the one thing that I can't stand about Netscape/Mozilla.

Goddammit people, I will continue to post this until you all get the message:

Avant Browser isn't even the best IE shell. MyIE2 beats the piss out of Avant.

reddoghud 2004-01-16 03:48:32 AM
I've been using Mozilla for quite some time (I used Netscape from the very earliest versions).

IE only gets run on my machine when it absolutely has to (which is only about maybe 2-3% of the time) -- otherwise Mozilla is great.

I like it because it has a good email client built into it, too. I personally can't stand the whole Outlook thing, even though everyone and their mother uses it. The other features of Mozilla (address book, composer, chatzilla etc.) hardly ever get used by me, but Mozilla is consistently faster for viewing most webpages. Give it a try, at least.

Jashter [TotalFark] 2004-01-16 04:18:44 AM
Firebird rules.

No pop-ups, no ActiveX, no security worries.

El_Presdente 2004-01-16 05:05:44 AM
DrToast

So what about MyIE2 would make it worth it to switch? The only major difference I saw was that Super Drag and Drop thing, which looked pretty interesting. Everything else seemed the same, or more complicated, like the mouse gesture stuff.

DrToast 2004-01-16 05:32:26 AM
El_Presdente
I haven't tested them lately, so my opinions could be outdated. But I did use both of them for a while, and Avant Browser seemed to crash quite a bit on me, much more than MyIE2 eve did (just about never). The mouse gestures are a matter of personal preference, I guess. I could never get used to the rocker gestures (like in Avant), so I preferred the MyIE2 type. I will say that Avant Browser looks much nicer, though.

deadboy 2004-01-16 05:40:55 AM
I've been using variants of mozilla for a few years now, and i'll never go back to IE as my main browser.

mikesum32 2004-01-16 05:43:21 AM
What's a pop-up? What is this IE you speak of?

/uses Mozilla based browsers only

batmn42 2004-01-16 05:43:38 AM
*ahem* Konqueror *ahem*.

I'd rather use IE than avantbrowser, thanks. I liked Opera until it started to crash on me all the time for some reason. The fonts in Firebird give me headaches, and yes I know I could probably change them but why bother when I've got the amazingly all in one Konq.

Logan69 2004-01-16 05:45:09 AM
The crashing problems with Avant have been fixed. Though I only tried MyIe2 for a little while I think Avant is much superior.

CommieSheep 2004-01-16 05:46:07 AM
this is perfect, my IE is having all sorts of problems right now and i was just about to reinstall it until i saw this thread, but now i think i'll give mozilla a go instead

g0dzilla 2004-01-16 05:47:34 AM
gosh, too bad this "IE" doesn`t run on my RH9 sony vaio.

/mozilla since the beginning...

"Hm. A 'my browser is better' flamewar? I'm game," said GreenAdder.

"Oh, yeah? Well, I use a browser so underground that it hasn't even been coded yet. But it's got a really dope icon."

spamdog [TotalFark] 2004-01-16 05:49:42 AM
Firebird user here. Love the tabbed browsing.

HairyOne 2004-01-16 05:49:48 AM
I've been using Mozilla for a while now and I'll never go back to IE...

IE is stuffed for compliance to CSS standards - it's holding the web back...

To illustrate this point goto CSS Edge and check out the difference between Moz & IE...

You will, of course, need Moz & IE installed...

IE cant even do CSS1 properly yet (except for the Microsoft specific tags like scrollbar) and the power of CSS2 is incredible...

batmn42 2004-01-16 05:50:02 AM
Oh course, when I feel really hardcore, I browse with Telnet

I use Mozilla as much as i can.. but i just can't get Java working on my linux box... which is really, really farking annoying! I've read all their tutorials and the like, but it just won't work.

grr....

scansinboy [TotalFark] 2004-01-16 05:52:27 AM
Now how does one go about completely removing IE from ones computer in win2k? Devilishly difficult or downright impossible? Anyone care to help a brutha out?

IForgotMyPassword 2004-01-16 05:56:26 AM
Oh yeah!? Well my browser gonna kick your browser fanny all the way from virtual here to virtual Hong Kong!

Mozilla/Firebird all the way (for me at least)

Seriously though give them a go all you IE people they are actually better. I mean how old is IE nowdays anyway?

And besides there are plenty of IE skins for Mozilla/Frebird for those who feel uncomfortable.

wirefish 2004-01-16 05:57:37 AM
Fark looks best in lynx...really.

stiff_upper_lip 2004-01-16 05:57:45 AM
Mozilla- continued development, adhere's to standards thus weeding out bedroom teenage designers, integrated popup blocker, integrated Search facility, skinnable, fast rendering, multi-tabbed browsing, active-x control.

IE- spyware, insecure, encourages non-stanard inaccessible design, requires MyIE or Avant to become even slightly useful. About to loose the ability to automatically download flash/java/apple plugins.

The only thing I use IE for these days is to check my sites Google Page Rank on the G toolbar. If a web store can't support Gecko I take my business elsewhere- plenty of places that can.

Juggleboy 2004-01-16 06:00:32 AM
I like Firebird, for 4 reasons:
1. Sites load faster
2. Firebird loads faster
3. Tabbed browsing is nice, especially with Fark
4. I can use it at school to get around the filtering proxy

But my dad works at Microsoft, specifically on IE, so shhhhh.....

I love Mozilla, love it, love it. Been using it since beta, switched from Netscape. Strange, but I never got the IE habit, even though I've always used Windows...

What's the new features in 1.6? Bug fixes?

Avant kicks ass
i have never had a problem with it
but people just won't listen

Hey while we are on the subject of alternatives. Can anyone tell me if they have vector linux installed (the new 4.0 version) on a toshiba satelite a10 and got their softmodem working?

I am keen to try it but I am on dialup so it would take me a few weeks to download the damn thing.

I_am_ed 2004-01-16 06:08:01 AM
pah! ill stick with lynx thankyou very much. multimedia is over rated.

one other thing there has been entirely too many `cool` posts this moring.
