For parents, this has to be the easiest thing in the world to spot. If your child comes home smelling like a new car, he is using air freshener to get high.

Finally, a buzz that won't lead to Junior sneaking into mom's purse.

A 15-year-old Auckland boy died from inhaling butane gas, and a 14-year-old girl from near Wellington died last year after inhaling flyspray.

Air freshener is bad enough. But butane gas and flyspray?

allanhowls 2003-12-28 04:54:42 PM
Kids, just say no to huffing. Smoke weed, just like God intended.

Altoid 2003-12-28 04:56:58 PM

Chrono-Z [TotalFark] 2003-12-28 05:08:49 PM

MadSkillz 2003-12-28 05:09:54 PM
There's nothing like your kid coming home smelling of new car smell.

fudgefactor7 2003-12-28 05:10:07 PM
This is Darminism at it's best... let the kids (stupid as they are) die. We're better off without them.

lordargent 2003-12-28 05:11:27 PM
It's stories like this that make me realize just how smart I am compared to the general population.

Rik_D 2003-12-28 05:11:36 PM
This isn't exactly news, the cans of Glade Air Freshener already say "PREVENT PRODUCT ABUSE - KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND TEENS".

Chrono-Z [TotalFark] 2003-12-28 05:12:08 PM
then again i remember doing stupid stuff like trying to smoke the ground up tea from luisiann tea bags.....

UNchicA UNchicA UNCchicA

UuuuhhhhhhHuuhhhuhhhuHHuh. I had a friend who huffed gasoline that would claim there were little UNchicA's running through his head. And yes I was there huffing gas too. ( we were out of weed )

Mikya 2003-12-28 05:14:26 PM
1) Why would anybody buy A Christmas Story? That movie sucks.

2) If you really want to watch the movie that badly, just turn on TNT, you have a 90% chance of getting A Christmas Story marathon where you can watch to your hearts content or you die.

Mikya 2003-12-28 05:15:25 PM
I'm a dumba$$ and posted in the wrong thread! Hooray for page refreshes!

Here's a tip: if you don't have any weed, don't bother trying to get high. !

HellGremlin 2003-12-28 05:16:37 PM
Hahaha, talk about a self-correcting problem.

Clear Air Turbulence 2003-12-28 05:17:03 PM
Back in the day we used to huff Glade. It gave you a rush not unlike that of crystal meth, though far shorter in duration, and made your skin tingle. We'd shake the can real hard and spray it through a sock or something to filter the fumes. I never liked doing it, but some of my friends did, so I probably lost quite a few more brain cells than normal in my teenage years.

One that people used to huff which is not so popular anymore is Scotch Guard. I even liked this one a bit - you did not inhale the propellant like you did when huffing Glade. You instead inhaled the fumes by spraying it on a sock or something and then holding it up to your mouth and nose and breathing through it. It gave you a really strange high that was kinda like smoking grass but more hallucinatory, and it didn't make you feel like ants were under your skin. I knew one guy who did a lot of it, started thinking he could heal people with his finger like E.T., he started spraying it in a bag and inhaling it that way, soon Scotch Guarded the interior surfaces of his lungs, which prevented them from absorbing fluids, and he drowned in his bed, in his own juices. Anyway, the Scotch Guard epidemic got so bad in the early 90s that they changed one of the ingredients, and it no longer has hallucinatory properties.

Huffing stuff is the stupidest and most dangerous form of drug use there is. I'd rather find out someone I cared about was shooting up coke than huffing Glade or whatever.

People want to get high, they like the giddy feeling, the buzz whatever it is.

People like it.

But, because Marijuana is illegal, and they are afraid, these kids go out and inhale starter fluid, paint, cheap air freshener, because they can legally buy it.

It ain't rocket science folks.

Legalize it already.

hoorah 2003-12-28 05:18:15 PM
will there be a collective darwin award?

(now for something true, yet somewhat inflammatory)

Parents - if your kids die from this - it was your fault. Parenting is a skill. Learn it. It doesn't come naturally. It doesn't just "happen as it goes along". It is your job to guide them toward common-sense and to show them that they have the brains to not do something quite this dumb. If they are weak and no-willed, you had a hand in that.

(wont be here to read all of the 'kids make their own choice' remarks - they make the choices based on the teachings and the tools given them from - yes, we'll say it again - the parents)

This is Darminism at it's best...

So, will we be seeing these people in this year's "Darmin Awards"?

Inhaling cheap air freshener makes me gag. Any cheap scent, actually...

Mushrooms grow in people's back yards, yet they drive to the store to buy a can of farking carborator cleaner? *shakes head* No siree. *smokes a joint, eats a shroom* I'm off to play Mario Bros., thank you. *runs into nearby field, bouncing*

I got your flyspray, right here. Huff that baby.

"We call it sudden sniffing death"
Bahahahahaha.... I don't know why but I found this very funny.

Sometimes bored and sometimes lonely
Pimple faced and rather homely
He wasn't much for socializin'
The TV kept a mesmerizin'
In one ear and out the other
Picked up a trick from his older brother
Got him a can of sniffin' sauce
Pinned his mind up on a cross
Lacquer head knows but one desire
Lacquer head sets his skull on fire
Lacquer head knows no in betweens
Huffin' on bags of gasoline
Sniffin' paint since the seventh grade
She was high on gin and gatorade
On turpentine she lost her luck
Fell in front of a speeding pick-up truck
He was a boy of soft demeanor
And he loved his carburetor cleaner
The vapor made a sweet aroma
He sniffed himself into a coma
Lacquer head feeds his one desire
Lacquer head sets his brain on fire
Lacquer head knows no in betweens
Huffin' on bags of gasoline
Keep on sniffin' till yer brain goes pop

Huffing computer duster can be a lot of fun. That is, until you catch a stream of super-cold fluid in your nose.

TotallyFarkedDude 2003-12-28 05:32:35 PM
Kids these days. Why don't they just do us all a favor and kill themselves?

I have to disagree with this. Even if marijuana was legal, kids would still do stupid sh*t like this because they're f*cktards who don't know that they shouldn't do this.

Legalize it already.

Now THAT I agree with.

phildo 2003-12-28 05:35:12 PM
was this ever posted? i knew the kids in this story that blew up their car while huffing, then having a cigarette.

hahahahaha

This Just In - AP Pennsyltucky - Johnny Smellsnice, President and CEO of Glade Inc. was arrested earlier today for contributing to the delinquency of idiot kids."I've been suspicious of those tree-shaped mirror hangers for some time. We WILL prevail in the war on drugs!," drug "tsar" John Walters said in a statement. He went on to assert that America will no doubt one day be drug free...Smelly...but drug free.

voodoochild 2003-12-28 05:39:23 PM
Wow, I never got the whole inhalling fumes thing. I can't think of too many more obviously stupid things you can do to yourself. Who the hell is watching over these kids?

/ Save some cash, place a call, smoke some herb, continue to live.

Why don't the Australian kids sniff kerosene like the Aborigines?
We need some underachieving American exchange student to introduce them to Whippits or fainting.

Swank Spike 2003-12-28 05:44:42 PM
Huffing is so nasty. I knew a guy in high school (in Waco, Texas) who huffed so much paint and gasoline that he couldn't even recognize his friends anymore by the time he was 16. He was just gone. It was awfully sad, because he was a really nice kid...just poor and stupid, living with his grandma, with no other way to escape his hellish life.

And to hoorah: Yes, parenting is a very important factor in the choices children make, and statisticaslly children with good parents will tend to make better choices than those with bad parents. So most of these kids who are out there huffing stuff tend to be the ones with the shiatty parents. But, as with everything, not all of those children had nothing in the way of parenting. Some of them had good parents who taught them common sense and rules, but the child still chose to ignore them. To tell those people that it is THEIR fault is despicable and unethical. To call an incident of that nature anything other than a horrendous tragedy and the mistake of a rebellious child (which most human children, by nature, tend to be...to varying degrees) is simply inhumane.

My 2 cents

Logweasel 2003-12-28 05:52:41 PM
Interesting note, Clear Air Turbulence. A couple of kids in my high school (late 80's) died from huffing Scotch Guard. I didn't know they'd changed the ingredients. I sprayed my couch with it a few weeks ago and had to leave the room because the fumes were so strong.

We also had kids who huffed freon. Then there were the kids who went for the asphyxiation high...

Char42 2003-12-28 05:58:50 PM
Swank Spike wasted our time to say: "To tell those people that it is THEIR fault is despicable and unethical."

It is their fault.

Pestilence! 2003-12-28 06:09:55 PM
Well, it's not like kids these days are being stupid on purpose. Oh, wait...I forgot. Stupid is cool. Silly me.

Swank Spike 2003-12-28 06:15:58 PM
Char42: Howso? My siblings and I were raised in the same manner. My parents were very good parents in every respect and I turned out quite nicely. My brother, on the other hand, is currently in jail for the millionth time and has a long history of drug abuse and sociopathic behavior (and that would be understating his problems). My sister's story isn't much better.

My parents were not the ones at fault here. They parented well and there *is* a point where there is nothing more a parent can do and the child uses his or her own personality and intelligence to make a decision, after having given weight to whatever parenting and other external influences (friends, observances, etc.) they have received.

Not trying to argue, I'm just not understanding how come everyone is so fast to assume that children have no control over themselves whatsoever. They are not mindless little products of shiatty vs. good parenting, destined to make a good decision or a bad decision simply because of what kind of parenting they have received. Kids with good parents sometimes do stupid shiat and kids with bad parents sometimes turn out A-okay. They have brains of their own, somewhat undeveloped and inexperienced as they are.
