It will be too expensive, and then Microsoft will come out with something similar a year later, costing about the same.

SO they are going to install an ALL IN WONDER card in it?

Using your computer as an entertainment center isn't really that hard and the Linux heads have about a million projects going that in a year or two will make it even easier.

normally I shy away from these types of comments, but that site sucked ass to read.

My computers, 2 networked boxes in the living room and
one in the bedroom, have been my source of movies, games,
music, "radio" and news for the past 4 years. All that
technology is already available if you just hook it up
to the right equipment.

FarkmeBlind 2003-12-28 04:50:53 PM
I hope my living room belongs to Sony some day. Do you remember Zenith? Ugh. Right now my living room belongs to Kenwood and my cat. Good enough for me.

Yeah, real smart... how much does a computer cost vs. a console again? What was that? 10 PS2s?

PC and console gaming have been - and always will be - mutually exclusive, mostly due to cost and expandibility. Of course, there always has to be a numbnuts who makes a comment like this.

I, for one, find myself increasingly baffled by all of this consolidation of functionality when it comes to personal electronics. I thought it was cool that my PS2 played DVDs when I bought it and I know several people who use it as their primary player.

Eventually, these companies are going to find that their mad dash to make a buck off of "innovation" is going to leave the majority of potential buyers cold as they struggle to cope with the Swiss-Army knife-like combination of technologies.

N-Gage anyone? Like no one smelled that bomb coming a mile away.

Hey, speaking of news, did you hear that Uday and Qusay Hussein were killed in a raid?

pwn3d!

Armacham 2003-12-28 05:00:06 PM
All of these innovations were great.
The first time I saw them.
When they were called XBOX....

Raizok 2003-12-28 05:01:38 PM
Well it looks like my bit of speculation regarding use of the memory stick is something the author shares. Glad they're going with it too, would be nice to plug a 128mb stick from my digi-cam to save games on.

does anyone play PS2 online?

Palsy69 2003-12-28 05:14:38 PM
That "article" told me exactly PS0.

Cretzal 2003-12-28 05:15:44 PM
I am over here in Japan and this thing cost about 750 bucks! And that is the cheapest model with the 160GB hard drive and DVD recorder, way to much, meh!

HellGremlin 2003-12-28 05:18:54 PM
Wow... from the way they talk about the PS3, it appears the only apt descriptions are "Sentient" and possibly "Seeking to destroy mankind with robots".

Rock_Strongo 2003-12-28 05:19:13 PM
I am with flooo33.....PS2's online stuff doesn't hold a candle to the XBOX, they should get ontop of that before trying to go this way.....XBOX flipped the game on them with LIVE, it doesn't get anymore fun then that.

ladodger34 2003-12-28 05:25:59 PM
I've played my PS2 Online with Madden and Evercrack for a bit. Madden is pretty fun online, except for people quitting.

At least with the PS2 I don't have to pay fees to a subscription service to play stuff like Madden.

Zylon 2003-12-28 05:34:00 PM
Sony says "PSX", but all I hear is--

Bonzy20 2003-12-28 05:34:01 PM
PSX = $$$$$$$$

ladodger34 Xbox Live is $50/year. That's only $4 per month of unlimited, virtually lag-free play, same screenname across all games, as well as scoreboards and voice chat for most games. Not to mention that Xbox is ready for online play right out of the box. Ps2 requires an adaptor.

Xbox Live has over 100 games now, as well.

Bonzy20 2003-12-28 05:37:03 PM
eh, make that 70 + games online..oh well, still good

Yes, but you get the associated quality of an expensive system. Plus, do you REALLY think that the PS is going to remain the same price for the added functionality? I also don't have to wait around for someone to hand me technology.

Personally, you and your grandma can have the PSX and it's idiot-proof software and the attendant headaches of tomorrow. The nerds and the geeks already own their living room TODAY.

theflyingdutchman 2003-12-28 05:38:24 PM
PS2 has the online, and it's decent. Some of the games at least.

These "socom" games are pretty good. Sport games are gold; Madden and hockey. Then there's that Tony Hawk game. On the line. Final Fantasy was fun for a few hours (a few months ago when it was new.)

It could be better. I don't game all that much though.

ElectricMonk 2003-12-28 05:48:26 PM
The easiest way to fight back is to listen to better music and don't allow the marketing loonies to ruin art in the name of profit margin. If more people had good stereo equipment (hint: not Bose, Polk, Boston and similar mass market crap)they would demand better content. Listen to most pop music on a high end system and you will quickly realise that it is talentless crap fed to the masses. They assume you are listening to their drek on a shiat system so you won't notice the lack of talent. Not to mention the whole MP3 crap fest. Who decided that such a lossy crappy format would be the norm? I can understand downloading MP3's to sample new albums and bands before you decide to buy but holy crist people.......its just sad.

Whoa...it's the ps...X! An X! How cool and original! This may be the start of a new and wonderful trend in brand name marketing.

Smed 2003-12-28 06:03:52 PM
pkjun is right. I was about to say that, but he beat me to it.

BoneStorm 2003-12-28 06:11:14 PM
Well, actually, socko, I have a PS2, a GameCube and a kick-ass PC. I have a job and I can afford these things. However, I remember when a new PC was a far, far off dream and it was all I could do to scrape together some money to buy a Nintendo when I was like 14. The last PC I had lasted me almost 10 years.

My point is that there is no point comparing PCs and consoles at all. It's like cars and motorcycles. While both have their benefits, it takes a special kind of person to ride a cycle while almost everyone can drive a car. Another angle is that it is going to be the grammas of the world being pitched all of this new technology and whether or not they bite is going to determine the flow of commerce.

As for headaches, I didn't have more than when I got my first PC. I didn't really have anyone to teach me anything and had to learn how to do everything myself. Rewards, yes, but headaches a-plenty. All I have to do to play games now is keep my lens clean in the PS2.

"Perhaps wisely, Sony have chosen not to follow down Nokia's path of integrating a mobile phone into the mix. Fundamentally, mobile phones and media players lie at opposite ends of the portable device spectrum in terms of design and ergonomics, and some of the criticism of the design of Nokia's N-Gage is entirely on the money -"

I would also like to say that this writer is an idiot, I mean come on, the GBA SP uses a lithium ion battery too. Sorry, it was bugging me.

zeroroach 2003-12-28 06:53:17 PM
Sony's PSX is not ruling but failing.......I hear there were no sell-outs at stores the day it was released. It's just too expensive.

As for Xbox and Xbox Live, I don't swear often, but fark it. The main issue here is that it's a subscription service. Not worth my farking $50. Second, it's that farking company of devouring zealots that run it that piss the shiate out of me.

M3wThr33 2003-12-28 06:53:34 PM
Sony sucks. Their products, although rarely innovative, are expensive, break down very often and are outdated quicker than a pop star.

zeroroach 2003-12-28 06:55:23 PM
Say, speaking of pop idols, I wonder what Japan, which practically manufactures them, thinks of this "Pop Idol" bull that's on the boob tube now?

drstu 2003-12-28 06:57:55 PM
electricMonk-

are you saying that poor stereo equipment = poor songwriting?

ex_facior 2003-12-28 07:10:53 PM
i'll just.. buy all the consoles. that way.. you dont miss a thing! except maybe some money.

valkore 2003-12-28 07:29:02 PM
That "article" told me exactly PS0.

No kidding. It could have summed up the article in one sentence.. "We don't know what the PS2 will do, but it will be cool, and will cost money."

TrendyBastard 2003-12-28 07:36:50 PM
PS2 SUCKS, it is the biggest disappointment in video game history. The 3d0 was a better console.

ator1 2003-12-28 07:59:23 PM
ElectricMonk, how much nog have you had so far today? :) You sound totally nogged, dude. Totally. Nogged. Totally.

Tinymouse 2003-12-28 08:13:22 PM
I'm with TrendyBastard here (even if he is just trying to start a flame war). The PS2 was a huge disappointment. I had high hopes for it, so maybe that was the problem. In any event, I never bothered buying one.

On that note, I'd like to introduce a couple of people to each other:

Developer, I'd like you to meet Pixel. Pixel, Developer. NOW I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU TWO NEAR EACH OTHER AGAIN!

(I hate highly noticeable pixelation, which all PS2 games seems to have out the ying-yang, and yes there are a few exceptions, but not enough)

GoblinKing 2003-12-28 09:48:40 PM
theyve already cut half the features so they can get it out on time, it only has like 2 features more then the PS2, and its like 200$ more.

Locoz 2003-12-28 09:56:17 PM
Is it me or was tha t a REALLY difficult article to read? That writer's style is HORRIBLE!

JeanPoutine 2003-12-28 09:58:37 PM
Screw the PSX and wait for the PS3. In the meantime, get a DVD-burner and a TV tuner card to record all the shows ya want.
