Not plagiarism as long as credit is given. Newspapers reprint stories all the time.

It's pretty common practice for press stories to be republished elsewhere. Ever heard of the The Associated Press?

Plagiarism is taking work without credit. Copyright infringement is taking work without permission. They are different.

Compiled means that there is more than one story. He compiled the Gallery in this instance not the story within the article.

But the Hoosier Gazette articles appears to have Ross Leslie as a byline. Who's Josh? What am I missing?

falser: Yes, but you have to subscribe to the associated press and give credit, or out will come the legal department and their lawyers.

It is true that you can't copyright news, but you can copyright your writing of it. I could write a story about the capture of Saddam, no one has exclusivity of that, however I couldn't pick an article about it out of the New York Times and print it word for word in my newspaper without permission. Credit or not, that is illegal.

It does say compiled, but he should have referenced the source anyway. Even a paid new service (AP, Reuters, Knight-Ridder) has to be credited.

As a side note, I think it's hilarious that a school can't take away a scholarship because it made a mistake. They clearly intended to give it to the basketball player, for the purpose of him playing basketball when he got to school. I don't understand why the kid that ended up receiving it gets to keep it. Seems like it would be a "sorry kid, your guidance councelor is retarded" moment and it would be over with.

it IS plagiarism because nowhere in that article does it mention Ross Leslie, who had the byline in the original article in the Hoosier Gazette - hell, AP articles are very obvious about the fact that they're AP articles.

It's one thing to get riled up over replacing someone's name by saying, "compiled by" but I think you guys are missing the larger picture that the newspaper ran a piece of satire. It was all fake! That guy must feel like a big idiot right about now.

Back in the 1960s or 1970s Lord of the Rings was technically out of copyright in the US, and a publisher sold an unauthorized version. They did credit the author.

If you are in the US then as long as you got copyright permission you can put whatever name you like on the cover. The US doesn't have "moral rights", the right of the author to be identified as such.
