Interesting way to spell plagiarism.

/spnazi

TheSinisterMinister 2003-12-18 11:23:34 AM
Well, it says "Compiled by Steve Oakley"

I didn't even bother to read it...

office_despot 2003-12-18 11:23:43 AM
Probably not plagiarism -- the byline says "compiled." However "researched" would be even better.

playin_intraffic 2003-12-18 11:23:44 AM
Doh!

the doubter 2003-12-18 11:24:18 AM
Three million questions about why there's a link in the headline in 5...4...3....

BenitoLupito 2003-12-18 11:24:46 AM
A link in the headline? That's odd...

It's bad enough that these people are gullible, but also thought-pirating plagiarists.

HaywoodJablonski [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:25:54 AM
speeling?

Flibbertigibbet 2003-12-18 11:26:04 AM
IT'S NOT PLAGIARISM IF YOU ASK PERMISSION WHICH THEY OBVIOUSLY DID

L'EnfantTerrible 2003-12-18 11:26:37 AM
Is the story itself a fake or does fake refer to the scholarship?

PottyMcNugg 2003-12-18 11:26:52 AM
Wait a second, you can't just write "compiled by" and then plagiarize, can you?

Drew [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:27:42 AM
They didn't ask, I talked to the Hoosier Gazette guy this morning

migueldelascervezas 2003-12-18 11:27:52 AM
Not plagiarism as long as credit is given. Newspapers reprint stories all the time.

tatou 2003-12-18 11:28:27 AM
somebody's gettin' fired.

burber 2003-12-18 11:28:41 AM
I like the link in the headline, should do that for all follow ups.

falser 2003-12-18 11:29:45 AM
It's pretty common practice for press stories to be republished elsewhere. Ever heard of the The Associated Press?

petuniapup 2003-12-18 11:29:49 AM
He "compiled" a complete article and tacked on a few tidbits of information at the end? Booo...

Drew [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:29:52 AM
The original story appeared in the Hosier Gazette and was written by Josh Whicker. No credit is given to either and the story is a straight copy

PottyMcNugg 2003-12-18 11:29:54 AM
Wait a second, you can't just write "compiled by" and then plagiarize, can you?

batmn42 2003-12-18 11:30:20 AM
hahahhaaahhahahaa suckers!

/technically hypocrity, since I fell for the story at first also

darkhorse23 [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:30:41 AM
I'll take Drew's word over their's anyday. They are so owned.

shrinkydink 2003-12-18 11:30:46 AM
I don't know what "plagarism" is, but the San Diego article has two more words than the original: "Duke sucks".

Atvar [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:30:50 AM
Not to mention the misspelling of Muncie. They spelled it Muncey. That's just retarded.

cato113 2003-12-18 11:30:57 AM
I'll be looking forward to a flowup on this one, especially since I'm in to student journalism right now.

\like the link in the headline

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:31:37 AM
Plagiarism is taking work without credit. Copyright infringement is taking work without permission. They are different.

cato113 2003-12-18 11:32:12 AM
follow up,

drburk 2003-12-18 11:33:06 AM
Compiled means that there is more than one story. He compiled the Gallery in this instance not the story within the article.

HaywoodJablonski [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:33:45 AM
I hate when they fix typos in the headline, making most of the posts in the thread obsolete.

fienna 2003-12-18 11:34:30 AM
hehe... i love the concept of the story, 120 pound nerd signed to a college basketball team.... that's hilarious. :)

Rodeodoc 2003-12-18 11:34:34 AM
Compiled by? Is that what they call "cut and Paste" now?

d43pan 2003-12-18 11:35:18 AM
ZAZ: Can you have both copyright infringment and plagiarism? Cause this was taking without credit and permission.....anyone know?

Dogface 2003-12-18 11:35:28 AM
Compiled means that there is more than one story. He compiled the Gallery in this instance not the story within the article.

THEREFORE, I can "compile" a book that consists of the entirety of Lord of the Rings and two lines from Chaucer and then legally sell it as ALL MY OWN?

Idiot.

Jeff4379 2003-12-18 11:35:45 AM
falser The Associated Press is not a newspaper...it's a reporting agency.

Gamplayerx [recently expired TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:36:30 AM
Wait - I'm confused.

Drew said, The original story appeared in the Hosier Gazette and was written by Josh Whicker. No credit is given to either and the story is a straight copy

But the Hoosier Gazette articles appears to have Ross Leslie as a byline. Who's Josh? What am I missing?

ToughNutToCrack 2003-12-18 11:36:36 AM

Way to go Drew, keep the suckers on their toes.

Apparent Nuisance 2003-12-18 11:38:05 AM
falser: Yes, but you have to subscribe to the associated press and give credit, or out will come the legal department and their lawyers.

It is true that you can't copyright news, but you can copyright your writing of it. I could write a story about the capture of Saddam, no one has exclusivity of that, however I couldn't pick an article about it out of the New York Times and print it word for word in my newspaper without permission. Credit or not, that is illegal.

nuclear_asshat 2003-12-18 11:40:36 AM
It does say compiled, but he should have referenced the source anyway. Even a paid new service (AP, Reuters, Knight-Ridder) has to be credited.

The funniest is he didn't do quite enough web surfing to realize it was bullshiat.

Google News farkwad.

Wasn't it Purdue that caused a big stir over the editorial about how there were too many fatties there? But it hit right at a semester break so it was on display for much longer than normal?

d43pan 2003-12-18 11:40:56 AM
As a side note, I think it's hilarious that a school can't take away a scholarship because it made a mistake. They clearly intended to give it to the basketball player, for the purpose of him playing basketball when he got to school. I don't understand why the kid that ended up receiving it gets to keep it. Seems like it would be a "sorry kid, your guidance councelor is retarded" moment and it would be over with.

superoogie 2003-12-18 11:41:46 AM
Steve's done this kind of thing before. Take a look at this one:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20031212-9999_mz1s12gallry.html

Granted, he actually credits his source, but for the most part, he just reprints his entire column.

did you just hear a big woosh above your head???

Awful, fluff piece filled rag.

Paging Mr. Blair, Mr. Jason Blair.

lbthepdd 2003-12-18 11:44:38 AM
it IS plagiarism because nowhere in that article does it mention Ross Leslie, who had the byline in the original article in the Hoosier Gazette - hell, AP articles are very obvious about the fact that they're AP articles.

heads are gonna roll on this one - or they SHOULD, at least.

Fiddle-dee-dee 2003-12-18 11:44:57 AM
It's one thing to get riled up over replacing someone's name by saying, "compiled by" but I think you guys are missing the larger picture that the newspaper ran a piece of satire. It was all fake! That guy must feel like a big idiot right about now.

Lehk 2003-12-18 11:45:28 AM
if the links in the headlines continue fark may turn into /. yikes

kona [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:46:19 AM
ha ha

MindTrip 2003-12-18 11:47:58 AM
Hmmmm, but since it was published on the 13th on the Indiana website, shouldn't there be a credit listed for the original writer? And Flibbertigibbet, how do you know they 'obviously' asked permission?

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2003-12-18 11:48:23 AM
Can you have both copyright infringment and plagiarism? Cause this was taking without credit and permission.....anyone know?

Yes. Usually they go together but they are still distinct infractions.

THEREFORE, I can "compile" a book that consists of the entirety of Lord of the Rings and two lines from Chaucer and then legally sell it as ALL MY OWN?

Back in the 1960s or 1970s Lord of the Rings was technically out of copyright in the US, and a publisher sold an unauthorized version. They did credit the author.

If you are in the US then as long as you got copyright permission you can put whatever name you like on the cover. The US doesn't have "moral rights", the right of the author to be identified as such.
