never live in a place with a homeowners association or condo association. stupid rules and little dictators will make your life miserable.

unless you like having your liberty restricted in an all-american, clean-living version of facism. then, go ahead.

Hmmm in my neighborhood that would get you the chair........

!@$%#^ homeowners associations.

If they win, then I'm taking the entire population of South Baltimore to Court on a nuisance charge for wearing those stupid goddamned purple camoflage pants to every Ravens game.

The sad thing is that is not a bad looking paint job I have seen pink, purple ansd lime green houses that looked much worse than that. Heck my elementary school district had Pepto Bismol (pink) colored buildings when I was a kid.

There needs to be some kind of law limiting just how biatchy a homeowner association can be.

DAR [TotalFark] 2003-10-15 11:54:29 AM
Anyone who buys into a Homeowners Association is just asking for bullshiat like this.

suckers

Eat More Possum [TotalFark] 2003-10-15 12:08:29 PM
If you don't like the rules never, ever buy into a homeowner's association. Very important to read the covenents before you make an offer on a home and more important to ask around to see if the rules are enforced fairly. I've live with them and without homeowner's associations and for the most part have been very satisfied with them. They do provide a bit of insurance that property values will hold up and that in ten years the neighborhood will be as good as when you bought.

Sign on with a Homeowner's Association, and this is what you'll get. If you do sign, you're subject to those rules though. Welcome to taking responsibility for your actions!

ElCorridor 2003-10-15 12:11:24 PM
If people don't like the rules, they can move into a neighborhood without a homeowners association. With most HOAs, you sign up and agree to abide by the rules when you buy the house. If you change your mind later, tough shiat.

I hate HOAs and that's why I'll don't plan on moving to a neighborhood with mandatory membership in one. But if you do move into one, you gotsta play by the rules.

FLA Chickie 2003-10-15 12:20:44 PM
Where I live (SW Florida) it is homeowners association capital. These old people have nothing better to do than come up with ways to push out all the young people from 'their community'.

I used to live in a very strict one whereby they were trying to pass a law to elimate pets from the community - I don't think they were happy with me at the HOA meeting that I attended suggesting they may as well do away with small children....

mongosmash 2003-10-15 12:21:30 PM
if i were going to have to move into an area with a HOA i'd make sure the backyard was big, had a high fence and lots of loose soil.

CruJones 2003-10-15 12:21:44 PM
I like my Homeowners Assoc., they kept the "Crazy Purple Lady" across the street from me from painting her house bright purple. She wears all purple, has purple shutters, decorated her house in purple, and wears purple lenses in her glasses. Weird.

Plus they mow my grass.

likes homeowners associations

DistendedPendulusFrenulum 2003-10-15 12:21:49 PM
I wouldn't think of moving to a neighborhood unless I see at least one yard with a Hot Wheels in it.

beer4breakfast 2003-10-15 12:22:16 PM
From the pic I think the house looks pretty nice. Don't people have better things to do with their time?

ChiTownJack 2003-10-15 12:22:26 PM
Hopefully they'll let these people keep their house painted the color they want. It's their house they paid for it. Homeowner Associations are horrible and I hope the courts will uphold this persons property rights.

Man, I hate Hate HATE HOAs. I will absolutely /refuse/ to live in a neighborhood controlled by those bastards. Die Die DIE you fascist losers!

serpent_sky [TotalFark] 2003-10-15 12:22:55 PM
That's the problem with the world... people can't just mind their own business and keep to themselves. So what if you don't like the colour of someone's house? I see lots of things I don't like on a daily basis... doesn't mean I feel the need to share that with said person.

The world would be so much nicer if people would just worry about themselves, and themselves only.

Pocket Ninja [TotalFark] 2003-10-15 12:23:22 PM
There seems to be a lot of jumping to assumptions here. Nothing in the article specifies that this color is against the rules. There's only some whiny suburbanites complaining that they don't like the color. If the homeowner's charter doesn't *specifically* list acceptable paint schemes, then this lawsuit is ridiculous and should be dismissed.

If, on the other hand, the homeowner's charter *does* list acceptable paint schemes, and the purple hue is not one of them, the purple house people are asshats.

you've gotta be kidding. anyone with such a blatently fugly house like that should be shot. i HATE stupid MFs who think pink, purple, or lime green is an appropriate color for your house... it's a neighborhood, not a box of crayons.

they should be shot

noit 2003-10-15 12:24:07 PM
ummmmm, not purple.

Your so right it is facism. You "own" your property but anything you want to do with it must be sanctioned by some Board of Directors. What happenned to private property in America?

wheatweasel 2003-10-15 12:25:39 PM
Looks like a very well maintained house and yard to me. Home associations are for rusted out cars up on blocks in the front yard. I would be suprised to see a color limitation in the HOAs rules. Either way, F em all. Homogenized houses with homogenized people. If I ever win the lotto I am going to hire a ton of lawyers, move into the most exclusive neighborhood in town and live like a cockroach. Have my team of lawyers keep them spinning for an eternity while I piss off the rich people in town...
Im thinking a porta potty on the lawn, complete with a line of homeless waiting to use it. On second thought, I will just dig a hole in the yard, in my underwear while sipping on a martini... The homeless can pee in that...

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPID!!

it's a nice understated shade. not like neon or anything.

WhackingDay 2003-10-15 12:25:46 PM
These days the only way to have your own home and no homeowners association is to buy your own piece of land, usually out in the sticks, and build your own house.

Most HOAs are pretty realistic about people's tastes. The only potential negative of a purple house might be, and I stress might be to the resale-ability of that particular house. It's not going to ruin the neighborhood or reduce property values of nearby houses.

I hope these farkers lose their little lawsuit and I hope the homeowners countersue for wasting their farking time.

I think for this homeowner to make their point to the HomeOwner's Association, she needs to go to each of their houses and smash hot McDonald's french fries into each of their kid's faces. That'll learn 'em.

AlgertMan 2003-10-15 12:27:44 PM
i bet they're republicans aswell

The_Missus 2003-10-15 12:27:54 PM
Hey, anybody else notice that this article and the McDonald's article both use the word "egregious"? Must be today's vocabulary word.

Badger [TotalFark] 2003-10-15 12:27:58 PM
If you can't follow the Homeowner's guidelines, don't buy a house in that neighborhood. End of story.

I used to get crap like this all the time when I worked for a zoning agency. It's ironic that most people say to get the Government out of their lives and they have a right to do with their property as they please, but let their neighbors do something they don't like, my phones would start ringing off the hook. We had no authority over those types of neighborhoods.

OminatorX 2003-10-15 12:28:45 PM
The house didn't look that bad. I was expecting something like Madonna's house in Cali. That was a bad paint job and what HOAs are supposed to be for. HOAs are fine for keeping the neighborhood in good taste. People who can't accept change are the ones you will run into problems with. They expect everything to stay as it was in the "old days."

galumph200 2003-10-15 12:28:50 PM
Man, what is wrong with the Midwest? I almost bought a house here in California that was much more purple than that. That's like a light lavender: I've seen a lot of houses like that. The one I almost got was deep dark purple with brightpurple trim. And the people in the neighborhood started a campaign to keep the previous owners from painting it a different color. Now that's a cool neighborhood.

didn't get house because of payments, not color.

mem 2003-10-15 12:29:08 PM
mauve?

I'm pretty put off by the color of the White House. I think it's time we did something about it.

I live in AR, so this is a relatively new problem, but they are moving in on us. If I had the money, I would buy up a huge piece of land and develop it (NWA, where I live, is one of the most rapidly developing areas of the country) and start an HOA with rules like, "you must have at least one car on blocks and a couch in your front yard." That would rock. ANd I would put my neighborhood right next to one of the snobby ones.

Treebeard The Ent 2003-10-15 12:30:40 PM
I will never live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association. I don't like people telling me what I can and cannot do to my own house. I don't like people telling me what kind of fence I can put up. I don't like people telling me what color my house has to be. I don't need a babysitter.

Now homeowners associations do have thier good points though. Well, at least there is 1 good thing about them. Let's take my neighbors for example. They can't seem to find any time in thier busy schedule to mow thier lawn. They can't seem to keep thier farking dog in thier yard (possibly because they can't see it because the grass is too high). They can't figure out how to put the crap behind thier garage on the curb for the trash man to take away... I mean we have FREE large trash pick up 2 times per year. Can you not figure out how to get that farking broken Barbie Jeep out to the curb? It's been there a year and a half.

Sorry for ranting... but my neighbors DO need a babysitter...

flashfry 2003-10-15 12:30:59 PM
I have bought two houses. One not in an association and then one in an association. Buying one NOT in an association was the reason I moved and bought one IN an association. The neighborhood went to hell, attracted low-income buyers, went even more to hell, then became dangerous. Made very little money on that one and quality of life went down as going outside on the patio became less and less appealing. Sad, but happens a lot.

If you handle yourself well, associations aren't dictators, they are neighbors and they change all the time anyway so no one stays in power forever.
