Mebbe they'll learn something.

The allusion to the fact that this obnoxious "asshole" can actually sell this book is enough to make it satire.

Al Franken was on Letterman last night, and really damn funny too, but the whole thing with O'Reilly is starting to get a little biatchildish.
I guess he wants to keep fanning the flames, though, because more flames = more book sales.
Can't say I blame him.

spiralscratch 2003-09-02 12:51:41 PM
Man I hate Internet satire sites. Never funny.

Ripping off someone elses work and bordering on copyright infringement is the only way he's sold any of these books.

The first amusing Satire article since I started using fark! Yay!

Funsucker [recently expired TotalFark] 2003-09-02 01:00:13 PM
Does anyone have a transcript for that BookTV show? Curious, but lazy.

wibblyhead 2003-09-02 01:03:11 PM
Has anyone who bought the book actually read it? I can't find any reviews on amazon.com. If you've read it and are posting on this thread, please let me know how you liked it (or not) and what kind of content it contains -- harsh, self-parodying Coulteresque polemics or sane, subdued yet humorous reasoning.

Oh and to test the filter: snickering.

TheWalrusKing 2003-09-02 01:04:44 PM
Wow, a funny satire article on Fark. Good show.

I don't know about a transcript, but you can watch it here:

Wibbly
I leafed through a chapter or two while I was at Borders. I enjoyed it when Al Franken cited Ann Coulter's belief that all liberals hate America and are out to destroy it, so Al Franken asked John Glenn (fighter pilot, astronaut and former U.S. Senator from Ohio) if that was true. He said it wasn't.
I also enjoyed where Al went through Coulter's book and pointed out how much she just made shiat up.
Case in point: she said Evan Thomas, a writer from Newsweek, was the son of former Socialist presidential candidate Norman Thomas.
Al called Evan Thomas and asked if that was true. Thomas said it wasn't. He said his father, Evan Sr., was a jeweler or something.

wibblyhead:

Yep, I've just finished reading it. It's hilarious, very factual and does have a bit of a bias (of course) but it does have facts that dispel some major conservative lies like "Clinton was offered Bin Laden", etc.

anotherbob 2003-09-02 01:08:17 PM

Revscat, speaking on behalf of the liberal circle-jerk:

Modern conservativism seems to mostly be a huge circle-jerk where everybody is saying "Liberals are sooo bad, uh uh! Conservatives are good! MMMmmm, yeah. Jesse Jackson did something else stupid today! AAAAAAAAH!"

It seems like conservatives can't shoot themselves in the foot without dozens of liberals lining up to follow suit.

The article was hilarious, though.

spiralscratch 2003-09-02 01:08:26 PM
GEAH: revscat, may I introduce you to rupert_prime and spiralscratch.

I'm sure the three of you will have a lot to talk about.

Huh?

No political angle here. I just thought the thing was completely unfunny.

ifarkthereforiam 2003-09-02 01:08:47 PM
I have to say that Fox set this up by claiming their viewers would be confused by Al Frankens photo on the cover with the words 'fair and balanced'. Sounds like Fox's opinion of their own viewers intelligence is prety low. After the Fox legal hissy fit, I felt compelled to buy it this weekend.

Yes, conservatives are farking unbelievable sometimes. The fact that they setup their own network to spread their hate is amazing. All I can say is...

Al Franken rocks!

hahah, its funny because fox sucks

cflagg 2003-09-02 01:12:00 PM
wibblyhead

I am reading the book as well. Really funny stuff. Rags on Coulter, Hannity, Bob Goldberg, and O'Reilly, among others, on how they either a) lie or b) lie about their lies, or c) distort facts to make them fit their arguments.

He also took a trip down to Bob Jones University with a member of his book writing team posing as a potential student. The biggest laugh is BJU saying they actually choose not to be an accredited institution.

lurker 2003-09-02 01:12:30 PM
Watched Al's interview on Letterman last night. Made me feel like buying it just to piss off O'Riley.

wibblyhead 2003-09-02 01:12:33 PM
Notorious: So the book lives up to its title. It debunks all the crap that Coulter spews, for one. I'm amazed that there are people who actually read and/or listen to what she has to say with a straight face.

These Fox people aren't strawmen, are they? Is Rupert Murdoch a closet Communist whose sole goals are 1. Make money, and 2. Destroy the credibility of the right-wing media in the process?

Thanks for your input, Notorious.

wibblyhead 2003-09-02 01:14:28 PM
Read Osiris and cflagg. I'm going to buy the book. Thanks for letting me know. I can't wait to read it.

EatHam [TotalFark] 2003-09-02 01:15:16 PM
There are plenty of good books by actual intelligent people out there. I can't imagine why anyone - liberal or conservative - would want to read anything by Franken or Moore.

kervina 2003-09-02 01:15:31 PM
Anybody who sides firmly with either portion of the Democlicans (or is it Republicrats?) is a moron.

EatHam [TotalFark] 2003-09-02 01:19:09 PM
OsirisOTheDead - I don't think Franken is funny at all. Michael Moore is kind of funny - Canadian Bacon was anyway. However, my feeling is that people are reading Franken and Moore and expecting them to be intelligent well-written literature. They simply are not.

jdave34 2003-09-02 01:19:26 PM

You can't deny Franken was funny on Letterman, and you can't deny O'Reilly is an ass.

OsirisOTheDead 2003-09-02 01:23:17 PM
EatHam:

Well, that's a matter of taste. I think Franken is funny. I think Moore is funnier (i.e., "Stupid White Men" is a much funnier book than Franken's latest).

Literature, it is not. I agree there. However, I only bought the thing because FOX execs were being dumbasses and anything I could do to piss them off, no matter how small, I would do. Turned out the book was funny and I'm just $18 poorer.

fark_indiana 2003-09-02 01:27:20 PM

In other news, poorly written satore articles will always make it to the front page of fark.

Hehe...this is rich:

A post that says this:

"Modern conservativism seems to mostly be a huge circle-jerk where everybody is saying "Liberals are sooo bad, uh uh! Conservatives are good! MMMmmm, yeah. Jesse Jackson did something else stupid today! AAAAAAAAH!" They just tell each other that crap over and over and over and over."

is in the same thread as:

"Yes, conservatives are farking unbelievable sometimes. The fact that they setup their own network to spread their hate is amazing."

and

"conservatives are just too stupid to realize that they are idiots. conservatives are also unaware that they are not even real conservatives."

and

"Awesome, my first accepted submission. Conservatives are idiots."

Or perhaps this was satire, too? Oh, and by the way, if you just don't "get it", well...find someone with a brain to show this post to, and mention the word "ironic" or the phrase "the pot calling the kettle black". They will explain it to you, unless their head just happens to be enveloped by their lower large intestine as well.

hehe.....too rich....

fark_indiana 2003-09-02 01:28:29 PM
um, i meant "satire."

/undercut my point, but my misspelling was as funny as that article.

Ripping off someone elses work and bordering on copyright infringement is the only way he's sold any of these books.

I've read Franken's other books and thought they were hilarious and pretty dead on. I also liked Moore's Stupid White Men. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed at how few angry voices there are out there considering the crap the current administration is cramming down people's throats.

I read some article on the Government's issue with Gay Marriage recently. It quoted Bush and Santorum, the latter almost frothing at the mouth to espouse his hate-mongering homophobia, and then interviewed a very quiet, dignified Gay man who was about to me wed in a civil ceremony that wouldn't be legal in any state, disallowing him the basic civil rights any 18 year old heterosexual has.

Those who are infused with the spirit of Nuremburg lawgivers and segregationists and will be remembered by history similarly.

Wake_N_Bake 2003-09-02 01:31:01 PM
and clinton did screw up with bin laden. maybe he was afraid that the 'peace-loving' muslim religion you all keep talking about was going to acquit. so instead he played nice with Saudi Arabia.

jdave34 2003-09-02 01:31:39 PM
I'd like to know how Ann Coulter became so popular. Everyone I speak to, Rep or Dem, concedes that she is a joke. Is there some sort of Coulter underground out there that signs a contract swearing to never read anything other than what she writes? Is there anyone here who takes her seriously?

Yeah, but funny like the-sound-of-one-hand-clapping kind of funny.
