Don't talk about Van Halen that way...

Photo caption: «Papa Roach may make the list of MTV2's 22 Greatest Bands.»

What? Greatest bands of this millenium?

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2003-08-30 10:39:39 AM
I can remember when people cared what MTV did.

It's the gratest bands that have had success since MTV has been around.

Though, it's not like a whole lot of ground breaking bands have come out since then. So I guess that's why bands like Papa Roach and Korn seem to be making that list.

Its Me 2003-08-30 11:14:42 AM
blah

I'm so sick of all of these lists, especially the ones on VH1 that go on for HOURS and drag out for DAYS and are played ad nauseum.

/lists suck

Jethro 2003-08-30 11:24:55 AM
Remember when MTV actually played videos?

JOHNDX 2003-08-30 11:44:30 AM
Don't talk about Van Halen that way...

It might jinx the band.

/Sandler

Since when does MTV know anything about music?

Its Me 2003-08-30 12:17:46 PM
I liked this show MTV had called 25 Lame where they made fun of the worst videos ever. They invited Vanilla Ice on the show and he threw a tantrum and trashed the studio. They should have more mean spirited stuff like that on MTV.

But then again I'm not in the 13-17 year old demograpic, so they don't give a fark what I think.

andonbray 2003-08-30 12:18:14 PM
MTV has now made it to #1 on my list. Guess which list that would be.

Necco and the Loup 2003-08-30 12:28:23 PM
All I needed to see was Korn, Radiohead and the Cure to know that this was complete bullshiat.

BigRightRear 2003-08-30 12:29:28 PM
MTV and the entire video thing sucks, music was made to be listened to,not looked at.

/way old school

Necco and the Loup 2003-08-30 12:30:14 PM
And I wish someone would give Winger and Torch the respect they deserve someday. :(

MegaDethHead 2003-08-30 12:30:26 PM
Guess which band is the sellout?

coughcoughclearsthroatmetallicacoughgruntburp

MucasPlug 2003-08-30 12:30:41 PM
If anyone knows anything about music... well, it's not MTV, i can tell you that.

adgy 2003-08-30 12:31:23 PM
MTV wouldn't know good music if it bit them on the ass. Who gives a crap what they think? Stick them in the same shiathole as Blender and VH1.

NeonDog 2003-08-30 12:32:46 PM
andonbray

Would that be the blocked channel list?

Rolander 2003-08-30 12:32:59 PM
Actually, the Cure do a pretty good live show, DMB goes on forever, it's like going to a dead show. I think part of the point it to point out good live bands

minmei 2003-08-30 12:33:50 PM
So which is which? A few of my favourite bands are on that list, so Im just curious who they are referring to.

11am? Who watches tv at 11am?

Rolander 2003-08-30 12:34:09 PM
Oh and MTV/MTV2 suck(s). But so does pretty much everything in popular music these days.

Outlaw2097 2003-08-30 12:34:29 PM
MTV2: Just when you thought MTV was enough to corrupt your generation...

maasgarid 2003-08-30 12:35:31 PM
"Music video is our stock and trade at MTV2, and music is the core of every program we do. That's our one and only criteria."

Uh-oh. That means they're gonna stop playing music videos soon and make MTV2 just like MTV, because music is their "one and only criteria".

The only good MTV-related thing is this:

TALKIN BABY!

Side note: anyone remember when MTV played a show called "AMP" that was on at like one in the morning? They only played trance videos and really off-the-radar stuff. I saw the video for "Toxygene" on there, and I still think that video beats up and robs just about every mainstream video that MTV has played in the last five years or so.

Megatitawitz 2003-08-30 12:35:53 PM
Bizarre. There's no band mentioned that I think "Eh. I don't like them, but I see where they're coming from." I hate like the bands or hate them.

And the hell has Korn done to become so legendary and memorable? Besides spark the shiatfest that was late-90's nu-metal? MTV calls them one of the best bands of all time, Spin Magazine ranks them above Pink Floyd on a list of the most influential bands, etc. Neither is a very respectable publication, but still.

And while I'm at it, can someone tell me what makes Seven Nation Army such a cover-worthy song? I learned the entire song on guitar and bass in about 15 minutes and yet Metallica covers it (thus calling it one of the best songs on MTV in the last 20 years), Ausioslave covers it live and everywhere you go, music critics are saying it's a destined classic.

Jack White is an untalented guitar player. So was Kurt Cobain, but God rest his soul, he could take the simplest chords and tell a musical story with them. Jack White takes every thrash-metal sound he has ever heard, tosses a whammy bar in the middle and goes to work.

God, I hate the White Stripes.

filth [TotalFark] 2003-08-30 12:36:09 PM
Cool! MTV tricked the Chronicle into giving them free advertising. Then they got Fark, too.

Duyogurt 2003-08-30 12:38:28 PM
MTV lost all credibility as a source of anything useful about music about 10 years ago. I'm not bitter, it's just the facts. You may say Metallica, Rush and Phish suck, but that is merely an opinion. MTV sucking, on the other hand, is as truthful as it comes.

insane_idoru 2003-08-30 12:39:05 PM
Headline writer: Tell us how you really feel.

adgy 2003-08-30 12:39:14 PM
maasgarid

Hell yeah. AMP was a great show. The first time I saw "Come To Daddy" by Aphex Twin... blew me away. That was way back when MTV used to have videos, though. Didn't it come on right after 120 Minutes or something like that?

VisitorQ 2003-08-30 12:39:15 PM
Okay, if the list is comprised of bands like Linkin Park and Korn, The Cure should be #1 on the list. If there were other bands that were...you know...not Korn or Linkin Park-esque, maybe they would rank lower.

m47h_M4N 2003-08-30 12:39:24 PM
The reason that these groups get recognition is because the music executives love to kiss ass.

the_goodVSbad 2003-08-30 12:39:35 PM
hacks: aerosmith
sellouts: U2
asskissers: metallica
stoners: phish
hasbeens: basically everyone on the list with the exception of radiohead.

Turkeyhead 2003-08-30 12:39:51 PM
Why does that surprise anyone? MTV is worthless.

felixecho 2003-08-30 12:40:24 PM
Hmm. M2 used to have nothing but videos. Not even commercials. I cut off my satellite access right after they added commercials and to this day dont even get mtv with my cable. Im not surprised that they added a show like this. One day they will need a M3 because they will have cluttered up the so called music version of mtv too.

TheSwissNavy 2003-08-30 12:40:28 PM
Phish s*cks the big one just as hard as all jam bands. Any music you could program a Casio to play has to s*ck.

Don't **** with the Cure, man. They are incredible live and "Friday I'm in Love" was a great video.

What about EBN OZN - that band that did "A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y" ?

Fusor 2003-08-30 12:42:21 PM
Could that be because people who watch MTV are a bunch of hacks, sellouts, asskissers, stoners, and hasbeens?

MegaDethHead 2003-08-30 12:43:31 PM
the_goodVSbad, I would give metallica the sellout tag too. Nirvana also gets stoners.

VisitorQ 2003-08-30 12:44:24 PM
FUSE: It's like MTV, only better, although it's still pretty bad.

the_goodVSbad 2003-08-30 12:45:16 PM
Megatitawitz
don't forget meg white. she's quite possibly the worst drummer i've ever heard.

Argh_Dammit [recently expired TotalFark] 2003-08-30 12:45:28 PM
I remember, back in the olden days, there was no MTV and people could decide for themselves what bands to like. Seems that since the onset of videos and major $$$ marketing of bands, most folks are doing as they are told, like good little robots. I would rather see a list of non-marketed excellent bands than see a list from the prime marketeer telling me who they think I should like this year.

moonduck 2003-08-30 12:45:43 PM
Hoover called. They want their suck back.

felixecho 2003-08-30 12:46:42 PM
Oh yeah. Thanks for the AMP reminder. Thats where I got most of my favorite bands. Tricky, Orbital, and a number of others. Do they still have that?

devindoug 2003-08-30 12:47:21 PM
Screw off, U2 is some good shiat.

soporific 2003-08-30 12:48:04 PM
The only good thing MTV has done since 1995 is Daria. Now THAT was a great cartoon, but I fear that it was too smart for the regular viewing audience. Who watching MTV would get a Goya reference? It didn't help that it held up for ridicule the type of people who normally watched MTV, ie jocks and stupid people. The show did have a good run and they even got to make a movie detailing how Daria finally escaped th hell-hole that was high school. I can't wait until the show goes to DVD.

BlindHampster 2003-08-30 12:48:25 PM
The greatest band to have ever graced the surface of this planet, is never mentioned on any "best" list. That band is......
Tool.
The best that has ever been or ever will be. IMHO.

adgy 2003-08-30 12:49:16 PM
felixecho

No way. MTV canned that show (along with any other show that had any halfway decent videos) a long time ago.

Jerks.

Anti- 2003-08-30 12:49:38 PM
Anyone remember the extremely short lived show on MTV called Super Rock (I think). It was this kind of weird "120 Minutes" meets weirdness. From what I remember they would interview some (what MTV considered) "alternative" artist, and in between this interview show all their videos, and any video of a band that was somehow connected to this band. I think the concept is kind of cool, but obviously MTV didn't like it. Not enough open mouth kissing probably..

VisitorQ 2003-08-30 12:50:16 PM
BlindHampster: I feel the same way. The band that I'd say is the greatest ever (Mission of Burma), would never appear on a list like this.

FatalDischarge 2003-08-30 12:50:45 PM
what does mtv know about music?

iamrobot 2003-08-30 12:51:03 PM
argh

mtv made me the robot i am today...although i haven't watched it in a decade and subsequently have that song by Hum stuck in my head...

\she thinks she missed the train to mars
\she's out back counting stars......

InfestedGamer 2003-08-30 12:51:31 PM
Who watches MTV for Music Videos? When they do show videos, they're the same ten rap/pop videos over and over. MTV sucks...

Bonzy20 2003-08-30 12:51:32 PM
Incredibly ironic, being that MTV doesn't play videos. period.

WizardX 2003-08-30 12:52:25 PM
How can anyone say bad things about U2? Seriously. Their music is hard to dislike, they have some incredibly moving songs, they're spiritual WITHOUT being preachy (and that takes talent), and Bono has devoted huge amounts of his personal fortune to goals such as helping ease poverty in Africa and stopping the spread of AIDS. (after helping to stop the violence between Ireland and England)

Even if you somehow hate their music, their real-world accomplishments are rather hard to dislike.
