As for Real Madrid, which also has signed mega-soccer stars including Ronaldo, Claude Makelele, Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, and Raul, Pele said that it's a "team that has a lot of money; it can buy the best players in the world."

So they're the Yankees of Soccer? cool.

DandamanFL [TotalFark] 2003-08-17 03:44:11 PM
How far do Steinbrenner'a business interests go?

Smookyfufu 2003-08-17 03:50:51 PM
Just the Yankees.

Jabber 2003-08-17 03:56:57 PM
If I recall correctly, Steinbrenner's company owns part of the Nets too.

Unfreakable [TotalFark] 2003-08-17 09:01:48 PM
The British media have made Beckham into more of a pop star than footballer. I don't think it's his fault, per se. I doubt he shies away from the attention, but who in his position would? It's great to be young, rich, and famous. It ain't like Pele was hiding under a rock between games, either.

blame canada 2003-08-17 09:18:42 PM
Dumbest headline evar. Nobody who cares about soccer (about the whole US) would get the headline

Nirvana98R 2003-08-17 09:20:21 PM
insults coming from an aged player that now has resorted to endorsing anti-impotence drugs must hurt...

Small_T 2003-08-17 09:22:23 PM
It would be more "amusing" if Pele had commented on Beckham's freaky lookin wife

Killbot_Factory 2003-08-17 09:22:44 PM
I was going to say something insightful, but it looks like Unfreakable beat me to it.

Oh, and to all my fellow Americans you will no doubt come on here just to post "Who cares about soccer?" (as I see someone already has), I have but one word for you:

STFU

Great, Pele. Glad you don't need Viagra, you whore.

Coming from the best soccer player ever it must hurt. Especially if he's taken some of those pills.

UberNeuman 2003-08-17 09:28:35 PM
So, Pele has problems with his bending Beckham... That's a shame...

Killbot_Factory, you silly boy. I didn't say I don't care about soccer, only my fellow Americans. I actually like soccer (when I have time to watch). It's just that nobody does care about soccer in the states.

SimuLord 2003-08-17 09:32:26 PM
Waiting for the Simpsons reference...

As for Pele, if he says he doesn't need Viagra, I believe him. 'Tis been said that the weener is a "use it or lose it" organ, and I don't think Pele's had any trouble finding willing women.

Unfortunately, white people have yet to come up with a suitable counter for the "black and back" remark. I mean, what can we say, "once you go white, you'll never feel tight"?

Sorry I missed your point :)
I, too, like soccer. It is obviously the most superior ball/team game in the world.
Just sick of all the Americans around here that biatch about shiat they don't know. Like my momma used to say: If you don't have anything nice to say, shut your farking mouth.

What a putz.

Dear Pele,

A) Of COURSE it's Beckham's fault the the media likes to make big deals out of hairdos and fashion!

B) What a major fark1NG profundity that a team that has a lot of money can buy great players. You're pretty damn insightful.

C) I'm sure your expertise on matters of attention-whoring and playing the media comes from your experience as a washed-up has-been, who can only get a pop from a country like Mexico, where there ARE no modern sports superstars, or from a boner pill. Where CAN I tune in to see your next commercial?

Dick.

3...2..1...The soccer haters respond. Sorry You keep posting your tired old arguments on why the US hate soccer. 70k people went to Reliant stadium to see USA vs Mex...69k to the stadium in Seattle to see Celtic and Man U play..69k in Philly to watch Barca and Man U. Yeah we hate soccer...it's dull and boring and...thatnks for reminding us. So explain all those Americans at those games...I doubt the Seahawks ot the Texans or even the Eagles will have crowds like that. So tou you I say...HE SHOOTS AND SCORES!

Texas Zulu 2003-08-17 09:54:30 PM

rawbeezeitz,
I guess I shouldn't mention I'm from Argentina :)

Seriously though, I have nothing against the game. I have a fairly healthy interest in it (more than say...basketball and maybe baseball), but I feel bad because it should be in my blood.

"It seems he's more pop star than player these days"

What 's so weird about that quote? I bet Beckham might agree with that quote.

Bob,

Do you think they will let Clarett play again?

which Browns QB did you want to Start?

err... uhhh...Damn I cant think of a question about the crew.

akulaalfa-

Did Man U win the Champions League? If I'm not mistaken, they were beaten by, who was it again... oh yea, REAL MADRID.

The reason that Real are the Yankees of Football/Soccer (whatever you would like to call it) is because they have the money and they spend it to get the best. They don't always win but neither do the Yankees.

ZipBeep-

No they don't have an overlap because they make sure that the star players that they buy wouldn't overlap the position of another star player.

Farking Corksucker 2003-08-17 10:49:14 PM
Soccer is huge, I don't know what you guys are talking about... I grew up traveling to tournaments playing and where I live soccer is the sport, us and a neighboring city are always in the running for best in the state. I disagree, soccer is huge, when Manchester United came they sold out the stadium. It's just that we as a society haven't been prepped for it to be commercial.

Of course I know who pele is- he played for the Cosmos, right?

And while I knew that Michael Jordan didn't eat Ball Park Franks, or Big Macs, or use Ray-O-Vacs, at least he never came out and admitted that he was a fraudulent shill like Pele did in that article. "(Pele) notes that he doesn't need Viagra, but would use it if he did." That's worse than Krusty the Klown's "I hardly endorse this event or product."

PeterGruntmuscle 2003-08-18 12:20:51 AM
TheSelphie: Yeah, we all read the article so we noticed it. In fact some posters were even so bold as to mention it in previous posts.

David Beckham seems to be a real attention whore and a moron, but I have seen few players that can place a ball so jaw droppingly accurate.

BullsEye2 2003-08-18 12:28:42 AM
u should see old reels of pele playing world cup,he made seasoned champions look like chumps.
if pele was in his prime and played beckham he beat his ass...fo' sho'

Farker_Texas 2003-08-18 12:34:07 AM
I'm farking sick of hearing about Beckham and Man U on American TV, especially ESPN. Both are grossly overrated.

Beckham the world's most popular player? Sorry, you've got to get two continents (South America and Europe outside of England) to give a rat's arse about you before to can stake claim to that. Trying being the best player in a World Cup, a la Ronaldo or Zidane.

And Man U. Same applies. Real Madrid and Barcelona will always be 1-2 in the world. They have far more tradition and more international titles. All Man U has is popularity in two of the largest English-speaking countries in the world. But nobody south of the Rio Grande gives a flying fark about them.

PeterGruntmuscle 2003-08-18 12:35:41 AM
That's like saying Ricky Williams could beat Gale Sayers in football.

Farker_Texas 2003-08-18 12:36:25 AM
P.S. Pele can say whatever the hell he wants as far as I'm concerned. 3 World Cup titles earn you that right.

PeterGruntmuscle 2003-08-18 12:37:11 AM
Actually it would be more like saying Deacon Jones could beat Ricky Williams in a game of football.

Quickdraw_McGraw 2003-08-18 12:50:04 AM
Not his fault? Come on! He's a sissy changing his hairstyle every week, wearing women's clothes and crp. don't tell me that shiat that 'it isn't his fault, the media did it'.
