In full agreement here. Sinbad is hilarious in it.

Ronald Reagan says wildfire threatens 2,000 structures, could be worse than "Bedtime for Bonzo"

If all our Governors had been in movies, we'd have more of these headlines every year.

We have these fires year after year, people live in fire areas, their houses burn, they keep building in fire areas, they keep burning, they keep building..... I don't live in a fire area, I don't care.

I have to agree. Jingle All the Way was funny as hell. When Arnold beat up that midget Santa Clause ring? Priceless.

Big surprise. Build a housing development in a fire environment and then scream Help!

Build houses on the edge of the ocean etc and etc, weep when they get swept away.

This is not a catastrophe but yet another natural event. Fire burning where it always has burned, and will always burn, and then declare a state of emergency cause we got a Fire!

Major stupid.

Major stupid post.

The particular area that is burning hasn't burned in years, the development is not very close and the "vegetation" is sparse.

Just a few months ago, Los Angeles decided firefighters just weren't that important. This was in addition to the cuts made in 2009, and 2008, and so on. Ahnold put aside money for firefighting, but they burned through it pretty damned quick last year. Now that a wildfire is ramping up just north of L.A., I'll bet all of that's going to be mentioned a time or two.

Well Bocephus, yer Gubbernator says there are 2000 structures endangered. And yes it has not burned "in years" which is exactly why it will burn hot and long once it does get going.

I'd like to suggest we change the nickname of my state from "The Golden State" to "The Flammable State". Or possibly just rename ourselves to the State Of Disaster.

/I live near there, had multiple friends who had to evacuate their homes last night.

That's LA city. This is happening in LA county.

I grew up in one of the neighborhoods the fire is now moving toward. There's really nothing but dry grass right now between the fire and the next communities. There hasn't been a major brush fire there in decades, that I can remember, but hopefully since it is just dry grass it will be easier to get a handle on.

Things may look that way from "Mizzurah" but a structure can be as mundane as a power transmission tower (there are 4 major lines through the area), a radio tower, or a large chicken coop. The hills that are burning are undeveloped. It's mostly burning embers they're worried about blowing eastward into the suburbs of Palmdale.

Now if you want to get into dumb places to build the fire is directly on the San Andreas Fault line. No joke. What is probably saving some structures from being directly in the fire line is the fact you can't build on top of the fault (there's a clearance on each side).

peterthx 2010-07-30 10:29:12 PM
PS: The fire isn't burning hot & long because the recent rains have left the vegetation relatively moist (lot of light grey smoke). And as I said, it's sparse, a lot of dirt & sand between brush. If the wind keeps mild (and the AV that requires a LOT of optimisim) the residents can rest easy. *FOR NOW* it's looks worse than it actually is. That can change in a heartbeat.

THIS. Wind gusts of 50mph are considered a light breeze here. Amazingly though, the wind lately has been barely 10mph.

JonnyBGoode 2010-07-30 10:35:33 PM
There are a lot of shacks, sheds, chicken coops and abandoned structures in that area, but it's getting closer and closer to the suburbs of Rancho Vista and Desert View Highlands (where I grew up).

Molavian 2010-07-30 10:39:18 PM

And now here's Ric Romero to tell us that in Southern California, summers are often very dry, the winds blow very hard, conditions are excellent for wildfires, and every year residents are amazed they usually get at least half a dozen of them.

"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you will remember if we were good men or bad, why we fought, or why we died. No, all that matters is that two stood against many, that's what's important. Valor pleases you, Crom, so grant me one request, grant me the power to put out fires! And if you do not listen, then the hell with you!"
