Barakku: Why the devil is doom in quotes?!

I've seen several people erroneously believe quotes are an intensifier, similar to asterisks. As in;

'She was so *very* drunk'.

they instead use:

'she was so "very" drunk'.

What's the actual term for this use of quotation marks?

Ah, Wikipedia knows: "Scare Quotes" (new window)

Scare quotes is a term for a particular use of quotation marks. In this application, quotation marks are placed around a single word or phrase to indicate that the word or phrase does not signify its literal or conventional meaning. In contrast to the nominal typographic purpose of quotation marks, the enclosed word(s) are not necessarily quoted from another source.

There's also "Ironic Quotes". I'm not sure if they're overlapping, one is entirely inclusive inside the other set, or they're just two independent terms for the same thing.

Attorney Stan Garnett was less amused when he saw the quotations for the first time Wednesday afternoon.

Heh, good one, Garnett.

No, it smacks of the sort of useful protests that this country needs.

It's not some crackhead with as can of spraypaint, pissing on a wall, it was a spoon up the ass of the harrumphing prats that wander that hallowed halls of the court system like rats with a mouthful of cheese.

Bravo.

I had a huge argument with someone over using quotes as intensifiers. No matter how hard I tried to explain that using quotes was going to make what they are trying to say look silly, I was bombarded with "You don't know nothing about modern writing". What could I possibly say to that? When someone pulls out the double negatives, you know you are fighting a loosing battle. So no one listened, and 1000+ copies of a poster were printed (at great expense), distributed all over the city, using valuable volunteer resources. The very next day, the phone started ringing, in re: the bloody quote marks. And the person I tried to talk out of using them turned around and tried to blamed me. The posters had to be collected, no way could they stay up, and again, valuable volunteer time had to be used.

I no longer give my time and energy to that particular agency.

I'd post a pic of the poster, but I can't for obvious reasons. I don't want to embarrass a group of people who generally do good work.

vandals? Because obviously it was more than 1. A crime this heinous requires at least 3 people to commit.
2 Law Enforcement Agencies are devoting resources to locating the "vandals".

Good point. We should look further into the the case of the individual who did this so the public can decide if justice was served.

Oh wait, we can't because all this person did was wreck some stuff and run away. Is there a real issue going on or does someone just listen to too much RATM? We don't know, do we? Excellent protest! Much change will come of this.

And again, the harrumphing prats aren't going to be the ones paying to clean this up. The aforementioned public will.

For Great Justice!

Yeah.

Oh, wait.

Got any paint thinner and a paper towel? I think it was pretty clever and harmless as protests go.
