Honestly, other than the actors are now 14 years older so it wouldn't work very well from that regard, I'd rather see a prequel. A sequel wouldn't include Donny, and that wouldn't be good.

Although it would just suck because of the expectations (even if otherwise it was done fairly well), I'd think one of the premium cable networks would try to do a "prequel" series called "The Dude" with new actors playing the main characters that would be involved in that (Dude, Walter, Donny, the Landlord, Jesus), just based on the cult status around movie.

I would like to throw my support behind this sentiment as well. Just because a movie is popular doesn't mean it needs a sequel, prequel or whatever. Just enjoy it, damnit.

I'd just like to re-iterate the previous sentiments stated in this thread about the utter lack of necessity of any sort of follow-up film and adopt them as my own as though they were incorporated herein verbatim. Thank you.

I don't know one true Lebowski fan who would want a sequel. I can't even think of a Coen Brothers movie that would be good for a sequel.

Sixth-ed. To me, the movie has the feel of one of those things where, due to divine inspiration, the convergence of the stars, advantageous sunspot activity, sheer dumb luck, and so on, everything just came together better than expected in a sort of the-whole-is-greater-than-the-sum-of-the-parts kind of way, the sort of thing you can't plan on and could sure as hell never duplicate.

But having said that, if they made a sequel I would probably be in line on opening day, money in hand.

Cagey B [TotalFark] 2010-07-29 11:06:59 AM
It's the Coen brothers. They're not going to do a sequel. And you're a douche for asking.

Not every movie needs a sequel. This ain't Star Trek. Damn nerds try to ruin everything.

Fargo 2: Norm Gunderson's Revenge. Let's see who gets that postage stamp now. *lock and load*

That's because the Coen Brothers do this crazy thing where they tell an actual, complete and satisfying story in their movies.

I know, it's like farking magnets, right?

DaWormyPimpsta [TotalFark] 2010-07-29 11:18:59 AM
And with this announcement comes the obvious conclusion that a sequel will indeed be written, produced, filmed and screened thereby nailing shut the coffin on all artistic merits within the American film industry.

The dude is in a Tron sequel, ladies and gentlemen. A. Tron. Sequel.

I rest my case.

Secret Agent X23 [TotalFark] 2010-07-29 11:19:46 AM
...and in addition to what I said a few minutes ago, I would expect the Coen Brothers would rather move on to something new. If they were to ask me for advice, that's exactly what I would tell them to do.

Seconded. IMHO, having a prequel that focuses on Walter sounds awesome....but it's just a good idea on paper. In the real world, it would most likely fail.

IrateShadow [TotalFark] 2010-07-29 11:57:18 AM
There's nothing to be added to the story by a sequel or a prequel. We don't need to know why the characters are who they are. It doesn't matter. Nor do we need some later misadventure. Like the narrator says in the prologue: "I only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there."

These are ordinary, boring people that just happened to get wrapped up in a scandal. It's just not likely to happen again.

IgG4 [TotalFark] 2010-07-29 11:58:19 AM
Lots of excellent actors played Philip Marlowe, but only Humphrey Bogart really nailed it. I feel the same way about Jeff Bridges and the Dude.

The only decent sequel to a comedy was Christmas Vacation. And the ten minutes that Shatner was in Airplane 2.

I was thinking that it could support a decent sequel, with Ulysses reuinted with his family and a man of some repute (having made friends with the Governor and all), but still having an itch for travel and adventure. There's such a good juxtaposition between the homebody-ness of the Holly Hunter character and Ulysses' man-of-the-world character that would make for a good story.

Bridges has also stated that Lebowski is a film he watches all the way through every time he catches it on TV.

So he's aware of what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps.

Some stories work to be single movie or book, some to be two, others trilogies and few are further. When a story stops with the first, do not add a second. Create a new story and continue with a few qualities, themes, etc., which made the first.

I don't think the goal is to top the original, or even make a decent movie, but to make money. Steve Martin's Pink Panther movies are a good example. I doubt anyone involved in those horrid movies thought for a moment they could do as good or better then the originals. Hopefully the Coen Bros. won't stand for it.

IdBeCrazyIf [recently expired TotalFark] 2010-07-29 02:54:08 PM
The best thing about the movie was Bridges, who I seriously to this day postulate that the man wasn't even acting. He was just being himself on screen.

In fact I would wager that when approached for the film it went something like this

So what do you think Jeff?
'So I get to be lazy, not shave, drink and smoke all day and you're going to pay me?'
That's plan Jeff
'....well...okay then'

That was the second of their movies that just......stopped. The first one being, for me, Barton Fink.
