Somebody needs to explain to that bed and breakfast owner that once you start using your house as paid lodging, it's not a private residence any more.

Also that if two men sharing a bed is against her convictions then it should also be when two unmarried people do it. Better start checking marriage certificates at the door.

She apologised for turning them away and she returned their deposit and was in no way abusive, the couple said..."It is like we were treated as lepers in the worst possible way."

I don't think you really mean in the worst possible way then. I'm not agreeing with the woman and I hope all this bad publicity bites her in the ass. However, I can think of much worse scenarios for a "worst possible way."

How does she feel about couples where the wife is pregnant from someone other than the husband.

It's still a private business and the proprietors are (or should be) free to serve whom they want to serve. Does this make their actions any less douchey? No, but that's their cross to bear.

"She said if we'd told her in advance she would have told us not to come."

Perhaps, you antiquated bigoted bible-thumper, if you had placed the words "No Gays, Lesbians, Transgenders, or Bisexual People Allowed due to my belief in the Invisible Bearded Man in the Sky*" all of this would've been neatly avoided.

* this is the condensed version... if she is barring people on her religious convictions she, I assume, wouldn't want to cherry-pick from the bible

A-farking-men. You start forcing proprietors to serve gay people, pretty soon they'll have to start serving blacks, Jews, and the Irish, too. And then we're talking the sort of slippery slope that would enable the Big Hand of government to cramming cripples, retards, and women down our collective throat of accommodation.

TFA is out of England, where such douchiness has been banned and as a result Old Blighty is a glorious enclave of harmonious good will toward one's fellow human.

Funny thing - in the US, there's a thriving network of easily-located gay-friendly inns who are happy to take the business the godbots don't want. And stunningly, all of this was accomplished without any governmental nosing-around.

I can vouch for this inn in New Hampshire as being fantastic, regardless of whether or not there's anything wrong with your genitalic predilections. My wife and I were married there nine years ago. One of the innkeepers is the local JP and will do the honors right there. Perfect if you want a small wedding without a whole lot of BS and drama. (/plug)

Once someone opens up a business and invites in the public in a commercial enterprise, the rules are the same regardless of whether it is in a private home or in a big box retail store. Private businesses have no special right to discriminate just because they are not publicly traded on a stock exchange.

I'd like to see the bill where businesses' "right to refuse service to anyone" is deemed unconstitutional and found to be illegal.

Is what she did in bad taste, rude, obnoxious? Yes. She's pulling crap that may have been normal 50 years ago, but nowadays that puritanical bullshiat is simply uncalled for.

Besides, wasn't there something in the bible about "judge not 'lets ye be judged?"

If you allow the gays, next thing you know, people will try come in wearing cotton/poly blends.

She owns a B&B, i think she should be able to kick out whoever the hell she wants.

were i the owner, i'd kick out whoever i felt like for whatever reason. It'd give me horrible press, but it's my right, right?

jakomo002 2010-03-22 08:51:07 AM
Can't she just go into their room the next day with a priest and exorcise the evil bum-demons that will have undoubtedly taken up residence in order to drag her shining Christian soul down to the burning pits of hell?

Or just spritz some holy water and Febreeze, mumble a couple of Hail Marys?

Yes, yes they do.

I absolutly support this woman's right to turn people away, just like I support a boycott against her establishment.

Bars and restaurants, among others, are allowed to discriminate on basis of dress code. Convenience stores can limit the number of minors allowed in the store at any one time. There are fitness clubs for women that don't allow men on the premises. How is it different that this innkeeper doesn't want gays? Would it be OK to send them on their way if she didn't like their sneakers instead?

Just took a look at the link. Lovely place, and think the couple in TFA would have probably enjoyed the "Dixville Suite".

I like you Dancin_In_Anson.

In the United States of America we have the right to refuse service to anyone.

United States of America is #1

Also, to be sure they were gay, I hope she asked them some skill-testing questions.

"Does this belt go with these shoes?"
"Oh God no."
"OUT! GET THEE HENCE FROM MY HOME! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!"

Big Dave 2010-03-22 08:54:59 AM
Mrs Wilkinson said: "I don't see why I should change my mind and my beliefs I've held for years just because the government should force it on me.

You don't have to change your views, gentile woman, we simply ask you to treat all people equally.

eh?

Just because they have chosen to live a deviant lifestyle does not mean everyone has to accept it. The B&B owner had a choice, he can either lose money or commit sin by letting sodomites engage in their sinful behavior at his premises. I am glad he choose right over wrong.

Absolutely. There are businesses I won't patronize all over the place. It's because of the way they treat customers, etc. B&Bs operate to make money. Why would this gay couple want to enrich a bigot?
