(AZCentral) Stupid It was a tough few years, but in 2010 Phoenix Police can afford to fly their surveillance jets again, so they just bought another one for $4M. WTF? Why do the police need a jet that can cross the city in two minutes?   (azcentral.com) divider line 122

FYI, the aircraft is not a jet, it is a turboprop. But it is crazy to spend that kind of money...the city must be controled by democrates.

But the police spokesman said the department didn't have many options when it acquired the Pilatus PC-12 Spectre single-engine plane in September. That's when funding became available from a voter-approved 2006 public-safety bond, which also paid for a crime lab and police stations.

So, basically, the citizens were somehow convinced to give these guys waaaaaaaay more money than they actually needed, and these guys are now obligated to blow that wad of cash on SOMETHING?

That four finned jet on the front will provide smooth cruising and great fuel economy.

It's not a jet, it is a gas turbine that contains compressors, combustors, and a turbine, and is much closer in technology to a jet than it is to a piston engine.

It's also completely outrageous for Phoenix to be purchasing this at any time, much less right now.

They've got a lot of enemy borders to contend with:

The Southern Mexicans.
The Eastern New Mexicans.
The Western Hippies in California who also have a flanking corner in the Eastern corner at Colorado.
The Northern Mormons in Utah who are not Christian.
And Nevada in the Northwest which is home to the city of sin.

Most rational thinking intolerant people would be rightly concerned.

Isn't the whole idea of surveillance to go SLOWER and LOWER so you can see the bad guys and criminal behavior you're trying to interdict?

Unless you're flying the SR-71, or an Aurora hypersonic jet, but then you've got camera equipment that costs more than the entire city of Phoenix.

From that article:

When asked if that suspect could be help criminally liable for the deaths of the men on the two aircraft, Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris said forcefully, "Yes."

WTF no doubt it's a dumbass move to run from the cops, but how is it his fault that story-chasing news choppers smashed into each other?

Back to the main topic, I don't buy that their hands are that tied with the bonds that they have to blow the money. Can't drive prisoners? Actually need aircraft surveillance? My ass, they got this crap stamped when things were flush and are laughing at taxpayers now while they play with their new toys.

This. Just because you have the bond money doesn't mean you have to use it. Sure, I guess it sucks that you can't use it for personnel, but that doesn't mean that you're obligated to just spend the money.

Couldn't the police switch to UAVs? I don't mean the Predator or Global Hawk - surely a smaller, cheaper one can be developed for local law enforcement, if one hasn't already. And maybe they could just charter aircraft for prisoner extradition on a case-by-case basis.

I think the citizens are as crazy as Florida's; only less populated since there is no beach and a huge 'haze' cloud (desert, and commuter town related).

/if you can cook an egg in a non-stick skillet that's sitting on your driveway, it's time to move.

I am amazed that this is allowed to happen. I live in Tempe, and I have a number of friends who lost teaching jobs, had massive paycuts, or otherwise teach in overcrowded classrooms.

I think the real problem is the fact that with the explosion in the population of snow-bird retirees in this area, the voter mentality has shifted to "I already paid taxes for my kids to go to school in the upper midwest. Fark your kids and their teachers."

This mentality coupled with a general fear of minorities by this same population spurs this kind of police-state activity.

/Kind of a vicious endless cycle

Unbelievable. The reasons they give are simply ridiculous. Transportation of detectives? If they need to go to a major city, they can't use a commercial flight? Or if its in a rural area, they can't hitch a ride with a chopper or drive to the damn place? Their time is soooo important as city detectives they need to jet to a location ASAP?

And transportation of prisoners back to Phoenix? A converted school bus with iron bars welded to the windows not good enough? I need to commit a crime in Phoenix and flee the county because I never got to ride in a corporate jet.

Remember a couple of decades ago when a group in Sun City tried circulating a petition to get some legislation through exempting them from paying for schools because they are a retirement community?

Well, I just moved here a couple years ago, but I am not surprised in the least. I think it's only gotten worse since the area has practically tripled in population since 1987.

I don't know who this Democrates guy is, but Phoenix is definitely controlled by Republicans.

Anyway, when you have a metro area that's over 1600 sq. mi. that has a lot of security problems you kinda need something like this.

Well, this does seem to tip the tactical balance of power in favor of Phoenix over Tucson.

I say they use that fancy plane to do a few strafing runs against Tucson and demand their immediate unconditional surrender.
