Fewer butterflies arrived this year than ever before, and as many as half of them are thought to have perished in February

There is a difference between getting lost and getting dead.

/just saying

Someone needs to get a hang-glider painted in orange and black, and lead the monarchs in the correct direction. How about a movie about this?

Dinjiin 2010-03-19 02:49:47 PM
So we have an El Nio winter and suddenly it is the final death for the monarch butterflies?

The loss of habitat is a new and legitimate concern. El Nio comes around every 4 to 7 years and is nothing new. I smell fear-mongering on the part of the article's writer.

If you have an hour to kill, NOVA did a pretty interesting episode on the multi-generation butterfly migration.

Well if they would put those street signs in English maybe the butterflies wouldn't have gotten lost.

Cool Story Bro:
A guy I knew in high school went to Mexico for a couple weeks his senior year. He went with some friends of his (I'm from California, so it's not a big deal to jump over the boarder). While there, he got mugged (guy stole his wallet).

A few days later, when they all came home, he walked in the door to his parents in tears. They were shocked to see him. See, the guy that mugged him managed to find his way out into the desert where he died. The Mexican authorities found him and the only ID he had on him was my friends wallet. They ran all the paperwork saying he was found dead in the desert.

The point I'm trying to make with this story is that being dead in Mexico isn't always as cut and dry as you might think.
