Home economics to Home Reaganomics.

I wonder how the right would react if we took Reagan out of the books and inserted Harvey Milk or Madeline Murray O'Hare?
Would their heads not asplode?

Business as usual, it looks like. On the plus side, you are reading this in Morgan Freeman's voice, which should soothe your soul a little bit. I am as dissapoint in them as you are, and am aware that not all Texans are this dumb - you, for example, seem like a reasonable person, and would probably not vote Mr. Romero out of the history books just because that woman had never heard of him before.

It's fairly telling that if you do not want your children to be indoctrinated with this nonsense, it would be best to enroll them in Catholic School.

Um, I hate to break this to you, but they were playing this game back in the early 80s when I was going to school there. This is not a new thing. But the market has grown a bit, and the rhetoric has gotten crazier.

The folks passing these amendments think that the old textbooks aren't telling the truth either. That's why they've amended the curriculum to talk about Reagan more and to specifically exclude discussion about separation of church and state.

Mexico? Have you looked at their textbooks? Talk about getting history all wrong, they don't have the names of any of the founding fathers right, or anything.

These conservatives always compare Democrats to some sort of Orwellian dictatorial force, and then they turn around and use tactics straight out of 1984's Ministry of Truth.

"We need to stand up to experts."

I love Stewart's rebuttal. In fact, I might just use that and go visit McElroy, the dentist, and telling him, "I have to disagree that brushing my teeth is good for me. I'm going to rub it from chocolate from now on. Why are you yelling at me? You're the expert, but I know what's best. Well, we just have to disagree."

And then I'd stab him with the little pick.

Why would he need defense money? If the jury is truly made up of Abstruse's peers they wouldn't convict him. I certainly wouldn't.

grinderman 2010-03-18 11:12:17 AM
I can't recall reading a textbook even once. I just reviewed class notes from whatever the given teacher put up on the board. I'm guessing most of that was in the teacher's edition, so why open my shiny new book? The teachers were giving the TL;DR version. I received A's and B's, so I guess I did it right.

/School was a joke, but I did make great friends there.

I don't even understand what the purpose of school boards is. Why do a couple of people with lots of time on their hands decide how thousands of children are raised?

schluum 2010-03-18 11:13:59 AM
If you put other people in charge of educating your children, you defer to their educational preferences. I personally wouldn't trust anyone, liberal or conservative, to educate me without having alternate options. If they know I can seek better education elsewhere, they have to set their own bar higher - even if that means teaching about people, events, ideas, etc. that are opposed to their own opinions.

The Bible is the only true history book. If it isn't in there, its just something liberals made up.

It's almost exactly the same as the "vaccines cause autism" people.

Most articles contain a quote that's a minor variation on "Well, those eggheads at Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic say it's ok, but as a Mom I just *know* what's best for my child."

The problem is I would argue an idiot who willfully leads to a diptheria outbreak is much less dangerous, long-term, to society than those who willfully foster a derp outbreak.

From what I heard on Stewart and PBS is that Texas buys so many textbooks a lot of other schools are stuck with their versions since printers pander to them.

Education standards seem like something a State should not have the ability to say 'no' to. Kids need at least the chance to escape the idiocy of their parents and immediate environment.

No kidding. Though I think for most right wingers the irony would be lost on them that in order to get their children away from right wing, American Christian thinking, you would have to enroll them in a Catholic school.

Sadly though, it's true. I went 1st - 8th Grade Catholic school. There I was taught Darwin and his theory of evolution. I went to public high school and we skipped that chapter every time it came up in science class.

I saw this last night and it seemed a bit O'Reillyish to me (maybe in observance of St. Patty's day). The "stand up to the the experts" line was cut off mid-sentence, so I have no idea if that was his point.

They went after a woman for not wanting to include a martyr in a list of heroes because he "wasn't famous enough". To be fair, these people are trying to determine which items in the entirety of human history are going to be included in a textbook (and therefore are testable). They can't just include everything.

All that said, I suspect the overall message from TDS is correct in this case. The particular way it was presented just bothered me a bit.
