The FAA can apply FARs 91.13 and 91.103 to damn-near every small aircraft crash.

It's Aurora, so you can't really fault the pilot for skipping the preparations and just wanting to get the fark out of there.

They listed an air traffic controller at DuPage airport as a contributing factor because he did not issue a safety alert for the radio tower. I don't remember ever getting an alert from ATC about radio towers when I flying under visual flight rules. Poor planing by the pilot seems to be the only reason that thing went down.

A rotor from the Air Angels helicopter that crashed on Oct. 15, 2008, lies just off the shoulder on Eola Road in Aurora. (Beacon-News file)

Really a year and half later and the NTSB rules this without even taking a look at the equipment and no one else is required to even pick it up??

Agreed. Under VFR in Class E airspace the ATC is not going to babysit you.

Also, the PIC was 69?? Jeez.

There was multiple shooters in our parking lot last Wednesday night at 10:15, and I haven't even seen it in the news yet or on Fark.... That's how common that is I guess. Although I live North of New York street on Farnsworth, which is usually better.

The NTSB's job is to blame all small aircraft crashes on "pilot error", which means as a pilot you really need to make sure all your "I"s are dotted and your "T"s are crossed during preflight. A great deal of flight training involves learning how to plan and make sure you thought of everything.

astro716 2010-03-16 07:19:13 PM
This happened less than a mile from Fermilab (i know because this happened just an hour before I was headed there for shifts). I'm kinda surprised there haven't been any kooky conspiracy theories blaming the accelerator.

/Good job, society, for exceeding my expectations

*ahem* This

My CFI was a lunatic for this sort of thing and I get stressed when I think about his attempts to punch holes in my flight planning, all in the name of learning to cover my butt.

And maybe if you do this right you don't run in to fixed object with strobe lights on it.

I don't get it. Are you saying dotting and crossing the i's and t's is what eliminates (most?) "pilot error" or are you saying the NTSB lazily decides to blame actual non-pilot-related problems on "pilot error?" Or a little of column A and a little of column B?

Saw them cut the top 75 ft of damage off this tower. Huey chained to the tower, 3 dudes with torches strapped to there backs, rainy day. Coolest sight I have seen in a long time.

All I can say is that the three metalworkers have brass ones, and the boys over at Midwest Helicopter are some of the best damned pilots around. Good video of a similar situation...
