Actually I'm kind of fascinated, now that she points it out.

There are plenty of male-dominated cultures with very oppressive practices for their own women. And they are proudly enforced. However, they're often not shocked or threatened by a foreign woman doing things that would never be allowed of a local woman- having a job, driving, ordering people around, not wearing a veil.

You could say it's just that the average man in the street isn't in a position to do anything about "the foreign woman", but I get the impression that they're not actually offended or threatened on a level which would need to be responded to.

That requires some thinking. I mean, the assumption has always been that they're oppressing women as a gender, but apparently "not as such", they're only bearing oppressive attitudes towards local women they identify with as being part of their community?
