I think I saw something similar from when the Oilers made the Stanley Cup finals back in 2006.

oh, it's not a joke, the whole of Edmonton and area felt like a ghost down, except for the glow of T.V.s in every living room window.

That game was like our Super Bowl, except everyone in the country was rooting for the same team and people actually watched for the game, not the commercials.

orth [TotalFark] 2010-03-09 09:57:31 PM
It's funny you can even see the commercial break spikes where of the less adamant supporters make a daring sacrifice.

I wonder how much the end of third period spike included flushing the vomit down.

Water? You mean like out of the toilet?

Wonder how much Molson wreaked havoc in the livers of all of Canada during those 2 games... At least 2 dozen of us were obliterated off IPA and/or hash (Bud Light reared its ugly head for the cheapies) and quite enjoyed the game.

Shenanigans.

Why would a municipal water supplier need to track water consumption on a minute-by-minute basis? How exactly is such information tracked?

FNG [TotalFark] 2010-03-09 11:33:31 PM
If I were ever a reporter, this is the kind of hard-hitting journalism I'd strive for.

(just kidding, that's hysterical, and I'd believe it)

They almost certainly have flow monitors scattered all over their system with real-time or near real-time reporting, so they can spot problems quickly.

That report simply sums up all the flows into the city.

I work at an oil pipeline and we track flow second by second. It helps in leak detection, which is where I suspect this information comes from.

Real-time monitoring on major pipelines is very easy to do.

Real-time monitoring on major pipelines also lets utility companies spot blockages, leaks or breaks very quickly so water can be re-routed and issues fixed.

But hey, thanks for being stupid.

FTA: "When Sydney Crosby scored in overtime to win the game, and the gold medal for Canada, we weren't just elated. We were also - and literally - relieved."

The reporter writes as if he's patriotic. If he was a real Canadian, he'd know how to spell Sidney Crosby.

Yeah, I know. It just strikes me as an inside joke from around the water office that no one expected would get out.

But, you're all right, what the hell do I know about city water supply management? My meter gets read once a month.

That's really cool.

Megaliters as in megaliters per hour??? Per day??? What exactly is the rate on the y axis? 400 megaliters is 400,000 cubic meters, or 630 meters by 630 meters, or about 1.7 million gallons. Depending on whether that's per day or per hour it's huge or not huge. WHERE IS THE DENOMINATOR UNIT?

A common anecdote amongst utilities engineers in the US is that you design your systems for the worst-case scenario: super bowl halftime. Though this particular game got higher viewership (%-wise) than that.

Seeing how Canada's average daily consumption per capita is 320 litres and there's around a million people in Edmonton and surrounding areas, I'm going to guess this is the daily rate.
