And they were in no way arrested because they cursed out the cop multiple times. No sir, that had NOTHING to do with it. This just another case of cops arresting citizens FOR NO REASON and COMPLETELY uNPROVOKED.

Private property (The mall parking lot) is still private property at 3:34 AM. If they hadn't been parked under a giant light in the middle of a giant parking lot they wouldn't have attracted any attention and nobody would have cared. Of course the cop is going to go check the only vehicle in the parking lot at 3:34 in the morning. Especially when said vehicle has the engine running under a light pole and is moving around.

Would you feel better if the cop hadn't checked the fan and somebody was being raped and/or killed in it? How about if it had been a couple of guys gearing up to try to rob the mall?

Quite frankly the cop let them off easy with a disorderly conduct charge. If they were both intoxicated and the engine was running there is a nice potential DUI charge there waiting to happen. He didn't even search the van when he had more than enough "suspicious circumstances" to do so. If they hadn't decided to start swearing at the cop and had been civil when he identified himself he probably would have just told them to move their van and we never would have heard about it.

That sucks.

I live in Astoria and take the #69 bus home every night but it only rocks when we hit potholes...
