jonesey_11 2003-04-21 12:07:41 AM
For a moment there, it looked like the end of his bat was a second baseball-- I had to do a double-take there..

Cobere 2003-04-21 12:07:59 AM
I was watching the game, and Sammy wasn't "clutching at his broken helmet" like the article says. His broken helmet was blown off his head and he was clutching at the side of his head. I took it as a good sign that he glared out at the pitcher very shortly after it happened.

I've never seen a helmet come apart like that. Insert Audie Murphy Platoon photo here.

And Maid, Sammy doesn't crowd the plate, that fastball just got away from the pitcher. He didn't really react to it, the TV guys were speculating that he didn't see it.

Ksdanj, not only do you need video, hehe, you need audio. My roomie wasn't looking and thought he hit one out ... sounded like a bat hitting a ball

TaiFong 2003-04-21 12:08:01 AM
It's an inside job! Someone wants Sosa dead! DEAD, you hear me!?

Ouroborus 2003-04-21 12:08:49 AM

Defamator 2003-04-21 12:09:17 AM
Can you say, "dain bramage?"

dg41 [TotalFark] 2003-04-21 12:11:17 AM
And had this been Gary Gaetti, he would be dead by now.

(if anyone knows what I'm talking about, you get a cookie)

skinink 2003-04-21 12:11:18 AM

Shock and Ouch !

I thought the Red Sox were cheap. Are the Cubbies helmets' made out of paper mache ? Or did that pitcher throw a FoMD (Fastball of Mass Destruction) ?

oteedee 2003-04-21 12:11:57 AM
Good thing it wasn't a cell phone, or the pitcher would be charged with a felony.

NCC_Dave 2003-04-21 12:12:52 AM

Defamator 2003-04-21 12:12:54 AM
Yeah, but Gaetti's head was super-hard. The last dude who could legally wear a helmet w/o ear flaps.
Choco-chip, dude, NOW.

JosephFinn 2003-04-21 12:14:02 AM
Skinink,

The helmet, I think, did exactly what is was supposed to do - dissipate the kinetic energy of the ball hitting his melon, and keep that energy from injuring him. In other words - ball hit helmet, helmet go boom, head no go boom.

Joseph

ChromaticDragon 2003-04-21 12:16:12 AM
that would freak the bejeesus out of me... baseballs move fast as hell, and if one hit me in the head... man. lol

slepygryhnd [TotalFark] 2003-04-21 12:18:03 AM
JosephFinn same reason race cars are blown to bits and the driver walks away (usually) unharmed

woohoo for kinetic energy dissipation

time for bed!

demotivate 2003-04-21 12:20:18 AM
That's a damn good picture.

kruuth [TotalFark] 2003-04-21 12:20:25 AM
What was that shot where that pitcher got hit?

TaiFong 2003-04-21 12:21:07 AM
Yeah, if that's not a screen cap from a video, then it's amazing how they actually got a picture of that.

SiliconHeroXL 2003-04-21 12:21:42 AM
DAAAAAAAAYYYYYUMMM!
I'm glad I'm not skilled enough to play baseball. That could have been me.

Errk [TotalFark] 2003-04-21 12:22:22 AM
Ya just gotta bruush 'em back once in a while.....yikes!

Copenhagen 2003-04-21 12:23:31 AM
I first read it as this...

smellyfruit 2003-04-21 12:23:50 AM
And I tuned into the game just after it happened. I always miss the good stuff, like when that one guy died and that other guy pulled an AK-47 out and started shooting into the crowd. You know, good stuff like that.

tarvuz 2003-04-21 12:24:11 AM
I hope he did not go into a roid rage right after that.

I really liked him but then I heard that he was the most fake person in all of baseball and was really a nasty dude.

venadium 2003-04-21 12:24:43 AM
Did anyone else get the Orbitz baseball popunder from that article?

mahuba 2003-04-21 12:24:47 AM
The worst thing about it was the sound. I was watching the caps lose to tampa bay and in the sports show during one of the intermissions they played the clip. Jesus Friggin Christ! It sounded like he had hit the ball with the bat not with his head.

One of the sickest things I have ever seen.

For once I even felt a little empathy, weird.

AbsolutXDC 2003-04-21 12:25:14 AM
Daaaaaaaaayamn!

TaiFong 2003-04-21 12:25:53 AM
Is there a video that doesn't just show every 180th frame?

Who cares about these overpaid crybabies all they do is run around in capri pants all day and spit out sunflower seeds.

TaiFong 2003-04-21 12:29:51 AM
Anti_Freak_Machine, I always wonder how often someone gets popped with a baseball. It seems like more people should die from attending baseball games.

Sphinx16 2003-04-21 12:30:15 AM
Juuuust a bit inside!

Defamator 2003-04-21 12:30:27 AM
Jeez, Copenhagen -
Where did you get that pic? It looks almost too real - you can see teeth, tongue, everything! Is it from "Carrie?" I hope I hope hopehopehope it isn't real...*shudder*...

safeinsane 2003-04-21 12:31:26 AM
This reminds me of the time Dickie Thon got beaned by Mike Torrez:

In a 31 loss to the Mets, Astros SS Dickie Thon is hit in the face by a Mike Torrez pitch that breaks the orbital bone around his eye. Thon will be operated on April 11, but will miss the rest of the season. When he returns, the All-Star SS will be plagued with blurred vision and be relegated to a backup role.

He eventually came back but was never the same. Anybody who has the nads to do that is alright by me.
