Americans fought the 1991 Gulf War with the best of intentions, and it was the right thing to do.

Oh, good. I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do or not. Luckily I let the media do my thinking for me.

Anti_Freak_Machine [TotalFark] 2003-04-20 05:12:13 PM
I wonder whats on their Wheaties boxes?

Faethe 2003-04-20 05:13:07 PM
Mabyethey should have a vieled woman on the cereal box? How do you stop crumbs from getting all over your viel? Do they listen to Tatu in Kuwait? Horrors!

FatherG 2003-04-20 05:13:16 PM

No matter the size of the flame, everything is gravy.

MillMan 2003-04-20 05:14:05 PM
Silly Americans. Democracy will only work in the middle east when they're ready and it's on their terms.

Of course, democracy is not the reason we're there, so the above statement doesn't really matter.

Shemp Mo-Din 2003-04-20 05:16:08 PM
Interesting that the headline of the article is "What we can learn from Kuwaiti cereal boxes". Seeing as how this is in a Canadian paper, and our neighbors to the North sat this round out, shouldn't it say, "What the Americans can learn from Kuwaiti cereal boxes"?

I'm not trying to start a flame war or bashing Canada, I'm just curious.

wh0mprat 2003-04-20 05:17:13 PM

Americans fought the 1991 Gulf War with the best of intentions, and it was the right thing to do.

This is a column. Columns are SUPPOSED to reflect opinion. That's what they're for.
He was simply stating his position, so you can take the rest of the article in context.

Down, boy, down!

Damn you, closing tags!!!

bush is stupid, people who dont support bush are stupid, war is lame, only through careful preemptive attacks can we defeat the arabs.

Silly Americans...Democracy is for Kurds!!!

Shemp Mo-Din

Becuase the article was written by an American.

wildeyedlunatic 2003-04-20 05:21:26 PM
The trouble with Shemp's idea is in getting Americans to learn, anything. The U.S. population is so over-cocky as to refuse to listen to anyone about anything. "Why should we listen to you? We are better than you and therefore everything that there is to think of worthwhile, we have already thought of," would say the typical spoon fed citizen

CerebralParsley: nice Trix reference.

On a side note, the title of this article made me (for some odd reason) think of the question you'd get in 3rd-grade English class. They'd ask "What is the bst title for this article?" Somehow, i don't think "What we can learn from Kuwaiti cereal boxes" would have been the answer.

stupid towel heads, all they want to do is go to our american universities and then go back to there country and plot ways to blow it up. we need to turn that part of the world into a parking lot and call it america 2, and why is it that any country that has a large muslim population is a war zone? example bosnia, somalia, the entire middle east.

doodievomit 2003-04-20 05:23:53 PM
WongFeiHong, you forgot the old favorite line many people resort to when they've got nothing else: "You just think opposite of my opinion because you've been brainwashed by (the left-wing media)/(the right-wing media)/(The Man)/(Al Sharpton)/(Jerry Falwell)/(Noam Chomsky)/(Other)!"

WegianWarrior 2003-04-20 05:25:41 PM
...Ayatollah Muhammad Bakr al-Sadr, who resisted Saddam and was executed in 1999 with nails driven through his head.

Say what you like, but I think something like that shows a little imagination on the previous Iraqi regimes part. Why wuss about with a 'letal injection', when you can drive nails thru someones head?

I mean, if you're first gonna piss on the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, you might as well let it all hang out (for those who hasn't paid attention to the international debate over the last decade or so, most experts on justice and human rights argue that the deathpenalty is a breach of article 5 of said Universal Declaration of Human Rights - see http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html for full text).

CerebralParsley 2003-04-20 05:26:57 PM
This statement is completely unsolicited...I just feel it must be said:

Spoons are used in eating ceral. Can't eat it with a fork.

Therefore, we are a spoon-fed nation.

wildeyedlunatic 2003-04-20 05:27:12 PM
doodie, see "spoon fed" in earlier post. Americans use the media opinion columns as a short-cut to their own critical thinking. Some choose to short-cut through the liberal side, some through the conservative, it's rare breed that thinks for itself.

I don't think you're painting with a wide enough brush; get a bigger one.

WeganWarrior actually, the nail through the head thing has been done before...in the bible. Although that was a tent spike. Jael didn't like her guest, so she drove a tent spike through his head. And for that she is "revered above all women" (If I remember the phrasing correctly).

Ultraviolent 2003-04-20 05:32:40 PM
i had a bigger brush, but some muslim guy said it violated the koran and blew it up. those silly muslim and their high explosives

Good to know.

Wildeyelunatic, as long as you admit that the Europeans are also guilty of widespread political "group-think"/"we-ism" too, then I suppose I agree.

Flame wars on Easter Sunday make baby Jebus cry and wet himself. Be nice, share the sandbox.

War zone? What war zone? There has never been a war zone in any Muslim country! If there were a war zone we would roast the infidel's intestines on our doorstep!
/Former Iraqi Information Minister

You forgot to mention that Islam is a religeon of peace.

zoobiewa 2003-04-20 05:39:12 PM
This is so stupid. We are making fun of a society that is what we used to be a few hundered years ago. They need to evolve theirselves, not have everything thrust on them. Just because we might be more tolerant doesn't mean that we don't have our own intolerances to deal with and that we can rub our SLIGHT tolerances in their cultures face.

Sifl 2003-04-20 05:39:17 PM
"Democracy will only work in the middle east when they're ready and it's on their terms."

Also in agreement. And about the shocking segregation and veil-wearing... why do we insist that everyone act/think/dress the same way we do? How did this frat boy culture start? You don't often see people from other countries insist Americans change their lifestyle...

Shut........UP 2003-04-20 05:40:26 PM
Islam is the religion of peas?

what would mohammed eat? WWME.

I think I will go easter egg hunting. and by "easter" I mean Sunday. And by "egg" I mean beer.

Ultra...Yea I guess my comment could be adapted to say "westerners" not just Americans

Sidi 2003-04-20 05:43:19 PM
I would amend your comment to just say "people" rather than westerners or Americans. People are sheep, the world over.

bulb007 2003-04-20 05:43:33 PM
India is not an islamic country, but we still hear hue and cry from the politicians over lip-to-lip kiss scenes in movies, valentines day, police hostility towards love-birds on the beachs/parks, social stigma against mini skirts etc. But a lot has changed in the past 4-5 years, I hear.

I guess the Kuwaitis will get there (if they will), in the next 40-50 years, atleast.

Forget the Weener links...give the women over there Boobie links too. They need some western culture added to their lives after all.

This is not a selfish request, either.

You can so eat cereal with a fork. I do that when I'm low on milk but want more than one bowl.

Actually, violence has skyrocketed in southern France, where the majority of France's growing Muslim population has decided to set up shop.

It is interesting that the Muslims in India (Indian Citizen)actually support Pakistan during a cricket match between the two countries!! Even fights break out! Sux!

Henchman 2003-04-20 05:53:16 PM
A commentator on NPR pointed out that it's often very difficult for countries who depend upon abundant natural resources for wealth to progress as much as those nations without such assets. For example, Japan has virtually no natural resources, so it has to look elsewhere to generate wealth, i.e. research, technology, manufacturing, etc. America, while resource-wealthy, didn't have enough to make that the whole of our economy.

It was an interesting idea.
