Ahh the power of cheese

buster_hymen 2003-04-17 02:37:10 PM
Most of the stories from AP can be found elsewhere. Let's all carry dead fish to their home office and protest

BadBatsuMaru 2003-04-17 02:37:19 PM
Those thankless bastards! It's almost as if you can't trust the news to be truthful, objective and give the whole story!

BanjoMan 2003-04-17 02:37:25 PM
Those bastards!

Donald_McRonald 2003-04-17 02:37:36 PM
Where was the actual Fark link to the CNN obits? All I saw yesterday on Fark was the TSG article and the Pshop contest.

aarkwilde 2003-04-17 02:38:00 PM
Weak. Credit where credit is due.

shadow9 2003-04-17 02:38:09 PM

Gerald Ford? I missed the one for Gerald Ford.

"Tragedy today as former President Gerald Ford was eaten by a pack of wolves..."

What fvcking losers.

mofomisfit 2003-04-17 02:41:30 PM
so wait, let me get this straight. cnn farks up, disables password protection for halfway done pre-written obits. a farker discovers this, posts it on fark, thus exposing it to, basically, the entire internet. (do not doubt the power of fark. go into any dorm building, and people who have no idea what fark is have a little printout of the "every time you masturbate, god kills a kitten" image on their bulletin board. but i digress) the smoking gun grabs the obits, knowing they'll be taken down as soon as cnn realizes what's going on. and somehow, the smoking gun gets the credit, not the site that exposed them. that sucks.

nothingyet 2003-04-17 02:42:20 PM
For those who missed it, Fark had direct links to both CNN obits for a very brief time yesterday. They were taken off CNN, Farks links were no longer relevant, so Fark linked the TSG piece.

Make me a mod, PLEASE!!!

stubblyhead 2003-04-17 02:42:27 PM
come on, where's the love? viva le fark!

RobbieFal 2003-04-17 02:42:46 PM
Another Web site, The Smoking Gun, also had copies of mock-ups for Reagan, Hope, Fidel Castro, Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandela, Gerald Ford and Dick Cheney.

Gerald Ford?

Wha?

was he senselessly mauled by a wolf?

RF

motherfarker... that pisses me off.

We appear to be keeping score:

CNN explains pre-obits. In other news, AP drops all mention of Fark from its release. Number of visitors sent to AP-flagged articles since Fark began: 1,995,356

NewsMax scampers into Fark-induced pre-obit whirlwind. Marks first time NewsMax has ever linked to Fark. Number of visitors Fark has sent to NewsMax since June 2000: 648,293

DrToast 2003-04-17 02:43:14 PM
Boooooo!!!!!

cometboy 2003-04-17 02:43:15 PM
if some asshat in Florida (probably) can change his last name because he's ashamed he shares it with the President, can i change my name because i'm ashamed to share initials with the Assholciated Press?

GGracie [TotalFark] 2003-04-17 02:43:17 PM
This is too funny. Ted Turner must rolling over in his "grave" - ;) ;) ;)

daz 2003-04-17 02:43:48 PM
At least TSG credits Fark for it, so even though AP are asshats, they link to TSG and TSG mentions Fark, so discriminating readers will figure it out

It's just another example of how CNN and AP modify and edit the news selectively and purposely leave out important facts.

If they do it here for minor, insignificant stuff, imagine what they do to the major stories!

willypeanut 2003-04-17 02:44:34 PM
uh, isn't fark built on linking to news articles? why do you feel special all of a sudden, like you've created some sort of phenomenon where people care about news? Granted its a great concept and I enjoy it, but start acting like an entity that needs to be pandered to and the news will become sensationalist just to get linked to from fark.

arched 2003-04-17 02:45:21 PM
I'm a Fjord, not a Linkin

caiteach 2003-04-17 02:46:11 PM
Not that we are bitter or anything.

mofomisfit 2003-04-17 02:46:38 PM
Willypeanut, i'm not saying fark should be pandered to, but jebus, give credit where it's due. tsg would never have the obits if fark hadn't linked to them. it's that simple in my mind.

macabre 2003-04-17 02:47:06 PM
fark THE AP!

Day_Old_Dutchie 2003-04-17 02:47:07 PM
News organizations, including The Associated Press, routinely prepare obituaries on prominent figures so stories can be run quickly when they die.

In other words, they want the jump on the competition before the corpse even gets cold!

This is nothing new. Mark Twain had this happen to him, around 100 years ago!

He said at the time "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated"

skinink 2003-04-17 02:47:14 PM
**Waiting for a CNN to post a link to the dead horse everyone is beating because of this story...***

Corporate Mofo [TotalFark] 2003-04-17 02:47:39 PM
Mofomisfit: basically, yeah.

cheyenne 2003-04-17 02:49:45 PM
That WSJ article linked to previously had a funny:

The Cheney obit screen features a quote from the vice president: "I've had a fairly successful career in the public and private sectors. . . . I am unusually blessed." CNN notes that Cheney said this "after a health checkup in 2000"--a rather snide observation, since according to the obit, Cheney died in 2001.

Of course, if Cheney, who is now 62, ever actually does die, CNN can congratulate itself for having been prescient. Or perhaps it will claim that it had to withhold the news of his death in order to ensure access to the White House while he was still alive.

Rosalea 2003-04-17 02:50:08 PM
sounds like some people doesn't want fark to get any more attention. could it be they are beginning to fear the power of fark?

maybe they find fark far beneath them and would prefer it was swept under a rug that was then kept out of sight.

SevenYearHawk 2003-04-17 02:51:24 PM
let's get that Boston NASCAR fan to e-mail AP about 50 gazillion times ...

larsoncc 2003-04-17 02:52:00 PM
Rosalea - Don't say that. Too close to home. Ow.

vroomazoom 2003-04-17 02:55:18 PM
could somebody please explain what is/was going on? I have not idea, and I cant figure it out from reading this thread.

larsoncc 2003-04-17 03:02:08 PM
So what? Get over it?

Well, not like I care, but translate that into REAL numbers:

$1 per ad for every 1,000 views. That's $2000. Say the average page has 4 ads. That's $8000 of revenue that Fark generated for someone else.

Wait a minute.

That kind of money doesn't mean jack to the AP. Never mind.

Scout32 2003-04-17 03:04:26 PM
Farkers are proving that they are a valuable source of news on the internet!

....or at least the most humorus (with boobies!)

gnasche 2003-04-17 03:10:18 PM
TSG mentions fark, and it is the story + the obits. If AP linked to fark they'd have to scroll down the page to find the post....which is a link to TSG. In their situation, I would also link to TSG.

cesare 2003-04-17 03:15:57 PM
ha ha that's rough.

tonyrockyhorror 2003-04-17 03:16:29 PM
"Tragedy today as former President Gerald Ford was eaten by a pack of wolves..."

Am I the only one who got this reference? Classic SNL skit!

Nabbl, wasn't Ford also eaten by circus lions in a convenience store?

recockulous 2003-04-17 03:17:04 PM
Yeah, Fark wrote itself out of the story by removing the link.

BTW, where are people getting these really detailed accounts of the # of visitors Fark is sending places?

stebain 2003-04-17 03:18:39 PM
MSNBC is good.

They spell "reacts" as "reax".

Vroomazoom
Look at yesterday's links.

alternativego 2003-04-17 03:19:55 PM
I hate to be the one that points this out but that's life. Get over it and welcome to the club.

fuque 2003-04-17 03:24:24 PM
Didn't fark remove all mention of whoever posted the link? They're the one that actually found it.

necro-99 2003-04-17 03:27:49 PM

for some reason, the title 'ronald reagan remembered' seems a little ironic to me, considering his condition. he may well have remembered, but he's not doing that anymore.
