well that was quick. And remember - once we give TSA goons their own union, we can NEVER get them fired for doing crap like this whenever they want.

Barakku [TotalFark] 2010-02-09 12:50:32 PM
Derpderpderp. If they actually tried I'm sure it would be very easy to design these things so that storage of the image is impossible.

Designing them so that they're not massively expensive, totally useless pieces of shiat, that's a toughie.

Every time someone does something like this and is caught they should be forced to look at scanner pictures of people like me (big fatties) and be required to find hidden contraband.

Really make them have to /look./

bberg [TotalFark] 2010-02-09 01:07:44 PM
Barakku: it would be very easy to design these things so that storage of the image is impossible.

And you would stop a TSA agent from pulling out his cell phone and taking a picture of the screen... how?

Basic rule of security: If you can view it, you can copy it.

A better, albeit much more difficult, solution is to just get over our terror of nudity.

I think a better solution is to get over our terror of everything and not have these scanners at all.

That would be nice.

However, until then how about we double up the scanners and let the passenger being scanned see the person who's scanning them?

Equal opportunity and all that.

Barakku: If they actually tried I'm sure it would be very easy to design these things so that storage of the image is impossible.

And why would they do that? If the guy has a bomb or weapon, then the image is evidence, and you don't want them destroying evidence, do you?

... is the rationale for why these machines have printers attached to them.

Within days of the devices being introduced at Heathrow, staff have abused their professionalism and printed out naked scans of a famous actor for their own titillation

yeah, there is titillation in that picture

Barakku: Derpderpderp. If they actually tried I'm sure it would be very easy to design these things so that storage of the image is impossible.

they probably need the pictures for evidentiary purposes

As I've said before, I think we should be issued knives at the gate.

The passenger's own self-interest is the best damned security there will ever be. Or, rather, it should be.

I'd like to think that collectively we are capable of not being petrified of Al Queda, who are--one lucky hit duly noted-- the Maxwell Smarts of international crime: Dumb, prone to hysteria, pedantic and occasionally lucky. People like that deserve nothing but our sneering derision and long jail time, but instead we treat them as though they are the ones in power, and I guarantee you that we won't be 100 posts in to this thread before someone is demanding these scanners at the Greyhound station in Poduck, IA and mandatory pants-wetting stations in all major airports.

Fu*k all of you scardey-cat, booger eating, Chino-shiatters.

eraser8: actual scanner images.

Fine.

That dude's got a gecko on his shoulder (What do I care who he has insurance with?), A chipmunk on each hip (your religion is your business), A cell phone that apparently has some sort of urethral interface (Too cheap for Bluetooth? Stick it in your dick!), A malignant melanoma (fu*k him) and a pistol that would be easily spotted by conventional metal detectors.

I remain unconvinced.

Yea the guns are easily spotted with METAL detectors. Any bomb making material should be easily detect by sniffers or dogs.

That's exactly right.

How do we solve the dual problems of overrun pet shelters and should-be Taco Bell employees being in charge or our national security? De-fund the TSA and start a massive training effort to make our nation's homeless dogs and our stupidest humans in to productive members of society as bomb sniffers, that's how.

We know the dogs are capable of it, and I assume the TSA agents can be trained, so why not?

Just real quick-like, since you're really goddamned stupid, the "gecko" is beret and it's a scan of a man in uniform. He's obviously either military or police of some sort.

But (again) don't let the facts slow your roll....

Sure they could be designed so storage/printing would be impossible, but I'll bet they never will be, because TSA must need the ability to make prints so that if anything suspicious is seen, the manual searchers could see what they're looking for. They'd probably also want prints for prosecution purposes, or to justify their reason for doing a manual search. If I were designing these things, I'd make the operator sign in, and I'd log that ID any time a print was made. I'd also encode the operator's name on any print, and I'd insist on procedures to account for the whereabouts of any print. That would go a long way toward curbing abuses.

Personally, I don't care about the body scanners. Even if they could see me completely naked in full color I wouldn't care. Just let me board my farking flight without asking me to take off my shoes and removing everything from my pockets.

All it takes is a digital camera, camera phone, etc and the image is ready to be distributed again.
