This is an awesome idea and exactly what we should have done with the Iraqi military.

At least they've got jobs now. When we dissolved the Iraqi army a lot of them were a bit unhappy about it.

Wake up sheeple. Just another in a long list of failures by Chairman Baracula Hasslehoff Obamunist. I mean did you all really think that an arugula eating product of the Chicago political machine would get anything accomplished? Our Dear Sarah would have achieved Mid-East peace by now.

Generals generally (teehee) swear an oath to a nation, not a religious sect, single leader or political party. To assume that they always must be indoctrinated in the ways of the current leadership is folly.

"Baracula" is pretty good. Full marks for that one. But your failure lies in the middle name, as David Hasselhof is awesome and drives a talking car.

Isn't this sort of thing rather common? What's the perception of the lower "troops", when their general flips to the other side? Who else are you going to get to be a general of troops, if not a general of troops? Does this mean the Taliban is falling apart? Kinda hard to operate, if senior leadership is jumping ship.

/so many questions
//not an expert

I could be wrong, but it looks like Peter was going for sheer over-the-top absurdity to highlight the ludicrousness of the people who normally make that sort of argument.

Who is this "Karzeid" person?

Does President Karzai know about this threat to his leadership?

No, Bush got rid of all the Bathists in Iraq and disbanded the military and they helped fuel the insurgence. He did the OPPOSITE of these and that's why we are still fighting his dumbass war!

Dil Doe 2010-02-09 02:02:26 PM
Heh. Afghan warlords have a long history of switching sides and bringing all their men with them at the drop of a hat, sometimes literally during a battle, and often as a means of resolving a battle. Enemies become comrades one day, then become enemies the next, and may switch sides so many times over the course of their "careers" as soldiers that there's practically no way to keep track of whose side they're on. So if you think you're going to roll into Afghanistan and assemble a standing military force comprised only of "the good guys," you truly have no idea what you're doing.

In before some clueless idiot says Reagan created the Taliban, ignoring the fact that the US was backing Ahmad Shah Massoud's Jamiat Islami, which later was incorporated into the Northern Alliance, rather than Hezbollah Islami fation funded by the Pakistani ISI and Saudi Arabia, which later formed the nucleus of the Taliban?

Because of course it's so much easier to claim that "mujahideen = Taliban" rather than doing the hard work of actually reading up on the various factions involved in fighting against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

There's always one. Even on a tangent... it was a senseless attack.

redmid17 2010-02-09 02:08:45 PM
I don't see why this is a huge deal. When we were rebuilding the German army in 1955, we used a ton of former Nazis in the command structure, even some who had been accused of war crimes (I think). Significant numbers of GDR commanders were brought into the Bundeswehr after reunification in 1990.

RevCarter 2010-02-09 02:09:50 PM
Ok..."cool story bro"-time.

Back in the late 80's one of the Taliban commanders loved to reward bravery among his men by dispensing the rank of General rather freely. One day he decided that his Generals needed a little more, so he declared that they should all be given limousines.

This didn't work out so well, as there were more generals in his cohort than there were limousines in Afghanistan. He then downgraded his promise to automobiles. This also failed to work out, for similar reasons - he had dozens and dozens of Generals, and there simply weren't that many cars on the market in his region. (Not a lot of car dealerships in Afghanistan during the Russian occupation).

Finally he settled on a reasonable substitute - Every one of his generals got a bicycle with a bell.

I was trying to figure out a good way to point this out, with historical references and facts...

Then I remembered this is Fark and you seemed to do a better job with the point.

Yes, I can see that objective being met, although not quite as they originally anticipated.

"Armies" like these are relatively easy to control. Pay them, feed them, and they will fight for you. Stop paying them, stop feeding them, and you've got a problem on your hands.

We can pay these guys more than they're getting now, feed them better than they're getting now, clothe them, house them, and fighting is all they know. Better they do the only thing they know how to do for us than against us.

I am what most Farkers would call a liberal, and even I will admit that it's OBAMA'S WAR NOW. Bush was the asshole who started it to take care of his oil pals, but Obama is making these stupid wars the focus of all of what's left of our country's resources at a time when we can't afford this kind of corporate goonsquadery. Obama is a neocon wolf in sheep's clothing.

Clear Air Turbulence 2010-02-09 02:25:16 PM
Glad that a lesson was learned in Iraq. There, we fired all the members of Saddam's army and tried to build a new one from scratch without any Baath party members, meaning they had totally inexperienced leaders and the leaders with experience were left to lead insurgents.
