A truck carrying calves (young cattle) overturned near my parents house when I was there visiting once. Some calves were running loose, some were pinned in the trailer, and some were already dead when we got to the scene within 3 minutes of the crash. We were able to get some out without harm. Other local ranchers began arriving and helping with round up and extrication. Some cattle had to be put down -- they were in horrible pain and were mangled up badly. Locals used 2 main methods to accomplish the euthanasia:

Rifle/shotgun

Chainsaw
