jehovahs witness protection: Bullshiat science is bullshiat.

I was about to say STFU, then I read this:

The term "thirdhand smoke" was coined in 2009, in a study in the journal Pediatrics which found that 65 percent of nonsmokers thought that the residue of tobacco smoke found on furniture and drapes, in rugs and dust, and on skin and clothing, can harm children and infants.

Really?

SpinStopper [TotalFark] 2010-02-09 10:29:59 AM
Fourth-hand smoke is where small children and pets are harmed by pictures of tobacco products. Fifth-hand smoke is where unborn children and pictures of pets are harmed because you thought about tobacco products ;)

Adjective Bird Whiskey [TotalFark] 2010-02-09 10:30:14 AM
Fourthhand smoke. You had sex with a smoker. Your dick falls off.

Fifthhand smoke. You saw a pack of cigarettes. Your eyes boil in the sockets.

Sixthhand smoke. You ate beef jerky. Your stomach implodes.

Seventhhand smoke. You thought about smoking. omg brain cancer

Interesting. Of course, the next questions are what levels of smoke residue are required, under what circumstances does this become toxic and just how probable/common are these events.

I suspect many smokers will just call it "junk science" and many non-smokers will trumpet this as the latest danger to their health that smokers create when the real answer is clearly more research.

ne2d [TotalFark] 2010-02-09 10:38:04 AM
darkyn: I suspect many smokers will just call it "junk science"

Well, asking random people whether they think something is harmful sounds pretty damn junk-sciencey to me.

ne2d: Well, asking random people whether they think something is harmful sounds pretty damn junk-sciencey to me.

That does seem quite silly, but the article goes on to discuss levels of toxins in the blood and other real-sciencey things.

Y'know, I've seen all these "Radon is bad" commercials stating that "Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer" in the United States.

But if some percentage of smokers are ALSO affected by Radon in their homes then wouldn't Radon be the Biggest leading cause of lung cancer?

Just something to think about.

speaking of which, when are my state representatives going to finally address all of my letters asking for a state-wide ban on indoor babies. if you want to have a goddamned baby that's fine, but don't bring it out in public where i have to listen to it.

gah, tell me about it: as if some arbitrary baby-section designation is going to actually do anything. not to mention the poor wait-staff that has to work in the section all day long, pretending that each baby is cute and special and acting like it's no bother to swap out a chair for a high-chair (and you know that baby isn't ordering anything to improve the bill) all the while ingesting decibels upon decibels of crying. these people make me sick.

============================================================

It's not bullshiat because it's not even science. They polled people as to whether or not they THOUGHT it was harmful.

It is bullshiat, just not bullshiat science :)

Well, it reeks to high heaven, so it's putting something into the air. I used to play in bar band, and well remember having to clean the yellow nicotine crap off my gear before bringing it in the house after a weekend gig, or the whole house would stink of cigarets the next day. I was a smoker at the time too, so I didn't exactly have a sensitive nose.

Seems reasonable to investigate whether it's toxic or not. Nasty smelling things very often are.

/like your mom!

As a precaution, Gundel advised replacing furniture and drapes that have been heavily exposed to nicotine, and she supports 100 percent smoke-free public places. In addition, smoking inside vehicles also leaves behind nicotine on surfaces, she noted.

And there you have it... 100% smoke free outdoor places...

Have tobacco companies ever tried to research a "safe" cigarette? Obviously inhaling combustion will always be harmful, but couldn't they reduce carcinogens?

Or maybe even somehow reduce the smell. That would be nice.

Well electronic cigarettes are gaining popularity. Of course there are already groups who want to outlaw those too.

Ok, here's the study: Get two couches. One from a life long heavy indoor smoker and another brand new from a furniture store. Put them in separate climate controlled airtight rooms. Put a rat on each couch and wait to see how long it takes to get cancer.

Yeah I know about those, but do they give you the sensation of smoking? Or is it just a nicotine delivery device?
