Apparently it's a traditional Ukrainian hairstyle that she uses as a political statement. Or so this article (pops) would have us believe.

Ukraine had basically five choices in the election:

Yuschenko - current president and a good, honest guy who never stole a dime but is taking crap for the current world economic problems and the fact that he couldn't give everybody in ukraine a porsche and a flying puppy in 5 yeras.

Tigipko - a boring but competent businessman. mildly corrupt, but his administration would be one of competent caretaking.

Yatseniuk - Brainy young Joo who, while mildly corrupt, would have done the right things as pres. Probably not actually yet ready to be prez, but then again, still a better choice than the below two..

Timoshenko - Massively corrupt babe with braided hair. Career thief with a massive conga-line of cronies, it's not clear that she ever had any principles. Ran a campaign that basically dressed her up as the Ukrainian equivalent of the statue of liberty - her campaign motto was actually "She is Ukraine" (though her campaign insisted that 'she' didn't refer to Timoshenko, though to who or what otherwise, it was not so clear).

Yanukovich - Massively corrupt fatass politician who didn't even bother with a coherent campaign, trusting instead that his network of corruption would pull him through, which it did. His slogan "Ukraine for people" made no sense, unless it was to be contrasted with "Ukraine for livestock" or whatever. He ran a monumentally inept campaign - could not string three coherent sentences together, and the billboard he did run were often 640x480 noisy jpgs blown up to massive size. And yet, he won.

Both Yanukovich and Timoshenko were both probably guilty of serious election fraud, but both would have been the #1 and #2 candidates anyway, since they had so large bankrolls due to the monied interests supporting them. So now princess Yulia is complaining basically that she didn't commit quite enough fraud to push her over the top (mainly because the western ukrainians, more ethically conscious than the easterners, just couldn't bear to hold their noses and vote for her anyway in the final round).

You've heard the phrase that in a democracy people deserve the leaders they elect? Well, I've never seen a more true example. Ukrainians on all sides abandoned ethics and contemplation and voted for 'their team' candidate who was seen as potentially brining them the most corruption loot. Perhaps only the dumbest 1/3 are under any illusions that Timoshenko and Yanukovich aren't massively corrupt. Fark them both and fark the Ukrainian voter. the majority of ukrainians deserve the next 5 years of hell that they've bought themselves into through this election, though take pity on those who voted for one of the first three.

I dunno...wikipedia says that it's a signature hairstyle of hers. Not saying that she invented it or anything, it's just that it seems like people don't normally sport that particular do.

Now I now more about the Ukrainian elections than I really wanted to know. It sounds like some elections here in the US where the corrupt bozos are the only candidates with a real chance to win. Never underestimate the power of being attractive and willing to say anything to win.

From what I've read in Ukrainian newspapers (in English) and talking with Ukrainians, Yushchenko wasn't a great President. He spent too much time wrangling over petty, inconsequential issues while the country fell apart around him. He was always seen as totally unable to reach a compromise on just about anything, thus leading to deadlocks and no real progress on any front.

I think Yanukovich's victory was more a condemnation of the Orange Revolution than anything else: the two main figures in it (Yushchenko and Tymoshenko) were the darlings of Ukraine and seen as the leaders of a new generation of Ukrainian politics, finally free from Russian/Soviet interference. And they got nothing of consequence done. How long did the Orange government last before Yushchenko booted them all out?

As far as "a nation gets the government they deserve", I believe that only truly applies when elections are fair and honest. Ukrainians haven't quite figured that part out yet, thanks to dealing with 70-odd years of Soviet corruption and inefficiency. The people of Ukraine got the government the corrupt elite chose, the will of the people be damned.

It's truly a sad sight. Ukraine is a beautiful country with wonderful people that's rotting from the inside out. Unless someone steps up and seriously straightens things out (kinda like Putin did in Russia), it's only going to get worse and the Ukrainian diaspora is only going to ramp up and up.

On a marginally related note, Ukrainian women are absolutely gorgeous, very kind, very sweet, and very intelligent. Both in their home country and abroad, I've only met a small number of them who don't live up to this.

You can elect whoever you want, but when your country is ruled by a clique of gangster-businessmen who carved out their personal fifedoms in the 90's and have no intention of giving them up, then elections aren't necessarily going to solve much.
