(ABC News) Sick UN very upset that some Haitian hospitals, which are treating patients with donated medical supplies and volunteer doctors, are still sending patients a bill afterwards. US insurance companies, on the other hand, are downright impressed   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 107

I'm sure paying that bill will be high on the "to-do" list of all those Haitians.

and they bill you for 60 times the actual cost just to see if you're dumb enough to pay without negotiating, cause the "free market" is more efficient, or something...

And if you're on medicare or medicaid, they bill even more than that, and successfully lobby for laws to keep the government from negotiating cheaper rates or services... cause it's the free market!!!

FREE MARKETS are efficient!

So the doctors treating them should just work for free? They shouldn't be afforded their wages so that they can feed their families?

Yes this is a tragedy. Yes people need help. But free medical supplies and free medicine don't pay for the doctor's time or care.

Instead of threatening to cut off medical supplies, the UN should be investigating how they can alleviate the problem of compensating the medical staff as well.

You DNRTFA, did you?

FTA: Hospitals don't need to charge patients to pay their staff, because Haitian Health Ministry employees are getting paid with donated money, Rerat added.

Lots of the doctors that "volunteered" demanded to be paid. I know here in VT which is the most liberal place on Earth, the people from Fletcher Allen demanded payment to volunteer. I guess I don't understand how charity works. I thought it meant to "give" of yourself.

This. I was privy to the negotiations between the hospital and my insurance for my daughter's birth. The price started at $29k, and was negotiated down to $11k.

Submitter has a very strange mental model of how Haiti is functioning if he thinks the billing is done afterwards. Even if the patients had homes left to send the bills to, and there were a functioning mail system to deliver the bills, and the bills got through to the right person, and the person weren't bankrupt so the debt is legally enforcable, there is still no functioning legal system to enforce payment of the debt.

This is more a case of unscrupulous docters demanding payment in hard cash before they will give away donated medicines.

Just goes to show: black people have no morals.

I stopped reading and taking the article seriously right here:

U.N. goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie, meanwhile, was heading to Haiti to meet with earthquake victims on Tuesday after speaking with hospitalized quake survivors in the neighboring Dominican

Honestly, it just looks like they are crying about rumors. Also, they are eventually going to need to start charging again, since health care is a business and there is no free lunch.

The worse people like you think my comments are, the better I know they are. That was a joke by the way, you do know that? Christ even an evil conservative like me would help an earthquake victim. I just would leave right afterward and let them do what they will. They will just make babies and summon more earthquakes with their unlimited Voodoo mana.

Article says they are being charged for donated medicine, as well as staff pay.. Lots of room for corruption there. If you want to keep this all in the light, charge for hospital use itself.

animalmagnet 2010-02-09 12:31:13 PM
I must be the only one who knows that blood banks in the U.S. have been selling donated blood for many years.

Sarsin - Your insurance company was a wimp. The bill for our daughter's birth and Mom's time hanging out in antepartum went from $47,000 magically down to $14,000.

Citation for NightOwl225 (new window) on doctors wanting to be paid to volunteer...

DIGITALgimpus 2010-02-09 12:36:17 PM
FWIW they are being paid... donation dollars are being used to pay Hatian doctors/nurses along with others who are spending their time here.

The question is should they be billing patients on top of that... or were the donations supposed to cover the cost.

This isn't that different than billing health insurance... then after the insurance pays billing the patient for the same amount... oh wait, they do that all the time and get away with it unless you fight them tooth and nail.
