They're buying a bunch of amphibious assault carriers too, for their Black Sea Fleet.

I have no idea why - are they planning on invading Bulgaria or something?

Actually France is really well known for their ships. Additionally, better the Russians buy it than the Chinese, China is trying to rapidly expand their navy.

A helicopter carrier isn't first on my list when it comes to things to project power.

If anything, it is purely a support craft.

Can't see a problem.

If the French really hated the Russians, they would just give them the Charles De'Gaulle.

Of course, if you scuttle it correctly the first time, you only need to scuttle it once.

For once I'm on the side of the French. If we want to have Russia as a partner to the West we need to treat Russia as a partner.

Anyway, the Russians saved a lot of lives in the Georgia conflict.

Yeah, but they couldn't stop Sherman from burning Atlanta.

Have you been to Atlanta? Sherman is the best thing that ever happened to that city.

I think France has the third largest standing army and is one of the one of the biggest arms producers and exporters in the world. They were the ones who sold a bunch of Mirage fighters to Saddam - you know, the ones we shot down.

Actually scratch that. They were known for their ships before then too. For using green wood that rotted from under them. And for being commanded by such luminaries of naval tactics as Pierre de Villeneuve.

France has the third largest nuclear stockpile, and the third highest military expenditure.

I am pretty sure they are no where near 3rd as far as size goes. I know China, India, Russia, US, and probably GB have larger armies.

Because India has so many I would assume Pakistan is up there as well.

North and South Korea will have larger armies as well.

So at best they could be 9th.

Russia needs to buy a whole ship? Don't they build their own warships? I understand them buying new components, weapon systems, electronics, etc, since their own stuff tends to be outdated... but a whole ship?

The "or something" is probably Georgia. Gives them a flanking presence requiring Georgia to shift response forces from the north.

Pakistan has just 1/10th of India's population and 1/50th of India's economy and the economic gap is widening exponentially...

French warships of the late 18th century were typically superb, it was the crews that sucked ass. Not to mention Napoleon, whose grasp of naval tactics ... lacked. He seemed to think fleets could be moved about like armies, which, in the age of sail, was not particularly true.

(And de Grasse was fairly competent, but unhealthy and pretty much alone in his competence).

-The Mistral class can carry an entire tank battalion and hundreds of soldiers below the flight and hangar decks. It's not just a place to park helicopters.

Can carry the new F-35, medical staff, cargo, damn useful ships - much more so than a sub or cruiser.

Good.

Because the ship in question wasn't an aircraft carrier, and you failed to link the single page version.

I thought the standard procedure was for the British to sink their ships for them before they got the chance to hand them over to the enemy.

So Russia can't engineer and produce it's own tools of warfare now?

I thought that was the one thing were damn good at.
