Sad. On the topic of Texas, if anyone else is watching the Texas Governor debate this evening, WHO THE FARK is this guy 'debating' Bill White??? He's terrible.

I'm a new Republican (voted Nader, then Edwards, then Kerry, then McCain) but I have always respected Bill White. The way he managed things during Ike really impressed me, and he's always seemed like a good pragmatic leader rather than a political ideologue. In fact, though I'm thoroughly on the Republican side in the national debate, I just may vote for Mayor White in the election (given how amateur and hackish both Perry & KayBailey have been so far).

It's not so hard to understand. I got a job after going to engineering school (98-02) then law school and changed my party affiliation after the Democratic party won Congress in '06.

Yes, I think Republicans have better interests in the federal scale, simply because I believe that Republicans (yes, acknowledging the massive gov't expansion under Bush) are the best option to reign in the growth of the federal government. I've become a true believer in federalism, and the importance of the petri-dish of state programs. I believe there is much to be learned (still) from the healthcare programs of states like Massachusetts, and other states can learn and improve upon that.

That said, I genuinely appreciate the moderate stances of Bill White. He's been a good mayor. Has seen us Houstonians through tough times, and still managed to keep us out of the severe economic hardships (not to mention natural disasters) that the other cities and states are currently facing.

Granted, the Nader thing was back when I was a hippy engineer slash geologist who believed there was no difference between Gore and Bush. That and a massive amount of pearl jam and fresh green trees. I always figured I am just destined to always vote for the loser.

I'd rather pay local and state taxes. I have no problem paying my local property taxes and state taxes. Local governance is closer to the will of the people.

I believe in the 80s Bill White was a lawyer for Susman Godrey (one of the 'good' plaintiffs firms). Under Clinton he was Deputy Secretary of Energy and did a pretty good job. He's been mayor of Houston since I moved here. He's been pro-business and supports domestic and Texan oil and gas production, which is great for our economy (and he's smart----understands that there is no excuse for benzene or other pollutant discharges).

Frankly, my issues with Perry are the toll roads. I went home to north Dallas a while back and was blown away by the number of toll roads.

/hey LOOK! Our Houston buses and trains are running into each other! yaaay! sheesh.

You're destined to vote for the guy who wants the loser to lose hardest.

A bunch of us make great salaries and have high educations, and still prefer higher taxation for social programs. (Apparently, you like the idea of higher taxation for corporate sluts and the mirage of 'innovation'.)

Nothing wrong with getting the shiat taxed out of you. But look at the budget - who do you think is more likely to stop wasting money on the military and the DEA? Of course the Dems will always have to pay lip service - but the Republicans actually campaign on those financial black holes. It's why I will never move to the states - lower taxes, but lower quality of life for my friends and neighbours who don't make as much as me. But more pot smokers in jail! Woooooo! Personally, I find one's salary to be less of a discriminatory issue here when it comes to access to help.

By the way, thread jack completed, eh? Just my 2 cents. What the US needs is a national thread jack - the cold war is over, and properly managed social nets permit countries to be far better positioned against medical and financial trends. You don't need to go commie to make sure that guy down the street can contribute to the GDP rather than eat your tax dollars in jail.
