That's not a hair question.

What? You can't weld long, heavy hair extensions to existing hair without there being some sort of consequence? Who the fark knew?

Barry Stevens also thinks all young black and mixed race children shouldn't have their hair braided, plaited, canerowed or have extensions added.

"Their hair shouldn't be controlled at a young age. Braiding and plaiting can pull the hair and it can be too tight on the scalp, causing problems like a receding hair line, baldness and hair loss."

Hairdresser Shola Rose isn't convinced though.

She said: "Having you hair canerowed or plaited is embedded in the black culture. He's not being realistic. Sometimes plaits are good for the hair."

Yeah, and having your clit lopped off and your hoo-hah sewn shut is part of many African cultures. Some stuff is bad for you. Get over it.

Can we get a ruling on this? Is this actually irony?

I could see that. From what I've seen it looks like it pulls on the roots of your existing hair pretty hard.

And a thousand lower middle class black women cry out at the same time, causing a ripple in the force.

Mmmm. Ripple.

This is most definitely not irony. Irony would be if hair extensions caused you to appear as if if you hair was shorter. If you read the article, it says that the women often appear to have normal hair, but surreptitiously suffer from baldness and alopecia.

I don't think it is. It's an unintended consequence. Now, if Rogaine caused long term baldness after growing hair in the short term I would say that is ironic.

Yes! Finally an appropriate use of the IRONIC tag.

No need to ban them, just do something so people know the risk ahead of time. If your stupid enough to do something that makes you go bald after being warned you deserve what you get.

Hair extensions and fake nails do horrible things to your body.

I just checked your profile pic and you look fine. My poor husband is Patrick Stewart bald these days. He's 51 now, but when he was your age he was trying combovers to cover his baldness. You are nowhere near that far along.

topcon 2010-02-08 06:06:11 PM
Traction alopecia isn't exactly new. Things like tight braids and extensions that pull the hair have been known to cause baldness for quite some time.

Cue the Hans Wiemann ad: I didn't know the braids were ruining my hair!

This is why having bad hair is so convenient. I just walk outside, pick up whatever the squirrels have cobbled together, and fluff it into my hair. Boom, instant volume.

People who wear these 24/7 (or any other headgear) are probably going to KEEP wearing them through their 20s because of the male pattern baldness that forms from the habit. (I really should say "guys" because at least women have the good sense to remove the hats they wear more than they keep them on)

...besides being downright disrespectful. My teenage son has a friend who wears one of these, apparently even in his sleep. He's got long hair now, but at 18, it's starting to thin already.

Kids need to learn to take the hats OFF when they go indoors.

Like Traction Alopecia?

xynix [TotalFark] 2010-02-08 07:13:46 PM
Not really. Glued in extensions do not CAUSE baldness but trying to get the glue out sometimes makes the folicle come out. This is completely different than baldness which means the hair doesn't grow back. Like any chemical there are some people who are allergic to the extension glue.

Tie in extensions can be easily removed with a pry tool and cause no additional stress on the hair.

Proper hair extensions cost around 500 for material and 500-800 putting them in and take hours upon hours to do. If done correctly someone can keep them in for a year or two until their hair grows out long enough where they don't need them anymore. If someone spends 200 bucks on extensions you get what you pay for eh?

The whole article is typical of the fear mongering coming out of the UK in recent years in the name of "Health and Wellness."
