It would actually be useful for parents of small children, or for seniors that are mentally confused (Alzheimers, dementia).

Great device development with many uses, and almost as many potentials for abuse. I hope that their claims are good, and altitude tests will follow. What a great device for hikers, climbers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, and what a boon to potential rescuers. This should be mandatory for late season hikers, and climbers on public land. Private land? Take it up with the rescue folks.

To prove Birds Eye's "Anytime, Anywhere" tracking capability, the tracker was carried by a tester traveling in the dense jungles of the Philippine Island of Luzon.

This is a ridiculous test for a GPS tracking system. Of course it's going to work anywhere in the world with an open view of the sky, that's the entire point of GPS. But when your system can be defeated by something simple like "going inside", it's not terribly useful.

Do you sign a No-Rescue waiver before you go out? Just so, you know, good people don't have to risk their lives trying to find your frozen corpse?

In TFA they say that it "combines both conventional GPS along with cellphone tower positioning". The latter makes it work indoors, unless there are no cellphone towers around, or you are deep down in a cave.

It says that it worked when the device was outdoors and indoors, so we can assume that it does work in buildings. I presume the reason they tested it in a jungle was to prove that they can get coverage anywhere, not just in a city where there's a ton of cell towers and plenty of satellites overhead.

When these things start getting cheaper (like below $100) there's going to be no privacy left for anyone. "Think a loved ones doing something they shouldn't?" "Why not slip a tracking device in their bag/car and see where they go".

SAR won't go in if it's too risky. That said, I don't understand your point. Are you saying that not wanting my every movement tracked means I don't deserve to be rescued?

some people just like to live in fear. if you understand and accept the risks involved, then that's fine. but to some people, that's unacceptable. you HAVE to stop doing something that's risky, because they cannot allow you to make such a decision for yourself.

it's just how some people think.

WhiteAndNerdy: That said, I don't understand your point. Are you saying that not wanting my every movement tracked means I don't deserve to be rescued?

Practice in safer areas.
Take all the right equipment.
Get an experienced guide when you're first learning.

Do all of the above and then get caught out by freak conditions, you deserve to be rescued.

Go hiking in wilderness in trainers (sneakers) with nothing more than a few cans, a packet of crisps and not even a compass, the world will carry on without you.

There are surprising number of people who fall into the second category and who think they have a right to be rescued and don't understand why people get pissed off with them when they run into exactly the kind of trouble you'd expect them to run into.

OMG... welcome to years ago.

I was thinking this was truly 'anywhere' and used satellite phone technology.

Deal Extreme has had these for a while
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.33331 $82
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.22599 $102
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11314 $160

Just needs a SIM card and you can text it and it'll text you back. Some of the cooler ones have a feature where if you call them it automatically picks up and you can listen in on what is going on.

That's pretty much my take on it. Nobody's entitled to a rescue. If they can help you out, great, but when you're in the outdoors you should plan on being self-reliant.

If I wanted a self-tracking device I'd get one of these anyway:

Dude, I've been making a living from technology for 25 years. I used to think it was a really good thing. Let me ask you, do you really feel comfortable with Google getting cozy with the NSA? Do you believe that absolute power corrupts, absolutely? How about I slap one of these on your car bumper and track your ass everywhere you go? Think I could make up some BS story based on your travel patterns?

If you go to a garden store and buy fertilizer and then go and buy some diesel fuel, hell, you're a terrorist. Thems bomb making materials. Do you really want to try to defend yourself from a cell somewhere?

How would they know if not for technology? You do know Hitler was implementing punch cards from IBM to keep track of the Jooz, right?

It's not about technology directly, it's about what can be done with it from the evil minds of power. Everyone is sure taking a big chance tuning themselves up with all these fancy gadgets and relying on a false belief in security and benevolence by the government.

I get all twitchy thinking about it.

NannyStatePark 2010-02-07 10:48:34 PM
I want Cat Lo-Jack because my cat is missing, and a microchip is only good if they are found. If this thing was just a bit smaller and cheaper it would be great for that. But I don't have a spare 70 bucks a month for this sort of application. Or 249 plus 49 a month, their pricing is all annoying.
