Exactly. I mean, ink leaks from pens all the time directly into your palm, to the extent that you feel you need to look at it during a televised appearance. I mean, who among us hasn't had ink leak into our palm?

But since she DID come out with lame, busted Teleprompter jabs, she has nothing coming.

Yes. It's to show solidarity for the missing, and to never forget, until all are returned. You may have seen the black & white POW-MIA flag, with the title, "You Are Not Forgotten." Usually most guys wear one for someone who is missing in the same war they fought in, or if they were MIA from a previous war, in the same battalion or division, if they don't have a personal connection to a POW or MIA.

I wore SSG Matt Maupin's on my last tour in Iraq. They actually found his remains about a month before I rotated back to the States. It was an odd feeling having to retire it. I never thought I'd have to. I'm glad I was wrong though. I can't imagine the family having to go through not knowing.

I don't get the "teleprompter" criticisms leveled against Obama. Every president of the modern age has used it.

And none other than Saint Reagan was the poster-child of teleprompter dependence. And THAT criticism was based on the perception that while he could recite a script just fine, when left to respond to questions unaided, he'd often seem befuddled. Obama has always been able to handle those situations just fine.

I think it's safe to say that the Tea Party Movement is strongly socially conservative. Especially when you have people like Palin and Roy Moore as some of your key speakers and are pretty much sponsored by Glenn Beck.

It might not be GOP but only because the GOP might come off as "too liberal" to them sometimes.

I don't know whether or not you can see this from your space station, but the Tea Party is not a real political party. It is rather a collection of morons that have been kicked out of every semi-respectable political party in the country. They are kinda like the Florida of the political process.

yeah when all their speakers are Republicans and all their hate is directed at Dems /Obama it's laughable they want to be called independent
it's a fairly transparent attempt to rebrand the republicans as Bush and their runaway drunken sailor spending spree has tarnished their conservative cred.

This is their meme:

See we're not those guys. We're different. Even though we're the same people. we're different. we didn't vote for all that spending . just some people who look like us and have the same names. We're born again republicans! You can trust us.

This is the level of competition.

Seriously. This is the level.

And the sad thing? The sad thing is, that these are the expendables, the throw aways that are supposed to fire up the base, and what Democrats are supposed to expend ammunition fighting.

As far as strategy goes, it's not bad. Create another "party" whole-cloth to distract and work in concert with the GOP. Tactically, they are a nightmare, but these are the folks that shave money from those who get fired up, and it gets shifted quietly. Spent on consultancies. Speaking fees. Given to PACs. It is a double pronged approach that is designed to shave the base as close as they can to skinning.

If Democrats really want to make a difference in the next election cycle--then the best thing to do is expose the connections between the Tea Party leadership and Conservative think tanks and PACs. Not just a little bit, but expose the funding connections, because you have to follow the money. Not just follow the money, but expose these frauds for what they are: a cheap bludgeon to threaten Congress with.

Expose the leadership and their connections, and blow it so far open that the public can't ignore it. So far, the hiccups with speaking fees and such for this Convention have been brief enough that it has allowed them enough time to spin. You can't do that. You have to expose this sham for what it is: a scam to get around funding law and to create a false flag campaign under.

This "movement" is amazing to watch as an expression of what the AEI and their fellow travelers will do in order to keep hammering away at regulation and foreign policy--and who they will get into bed with in order to try to keep a hold on my party. The charges of RINO and others for those who oppose these asshats, that's something that we'll have to bear for a bit, but if Democrats want to defang what amounts to the creation of a second party to compete with that is a subsidiary of their main rival, then they have to expose the ties and the funding.

I am not a fan of hucksters and certainly not of con men, and the entirety of this "movement" is sham and mirrors.

It's less of a big deal, than exposing this woman as the sham that she is. She holds a journalism degree, yet holds the media in contempt. She loves herself some fiscal Conservatism, yet left Wasilla swimming in debt. She loves to hold those in office accountable, yet decries ethics investigations into her own office as being partisan--when it was brought by the Republican controlled legislature. She loves responsibility, yet walked away from her office. She hates the idea of a teleprompter, but resorts to crib notes that would embarrass her high school aged children.

It isn't a big deal, it's more of the same from this woman. Someone so armored in her own idea of right and correct, that she marches on without much introspection or thought, because that would require her to actually examine her views and positions. She represents the death of ideas to ideology, and the cheers for this only prove that it's better to be popular than smart...

Pretty much, the entire Tea Party movement is a wonderful way to bring out the big guns to get the support of the craziest gun nuts, the most racist asshats, the most conspiracy minded, and direct them to GOP candidates. It is a wonderful false flag to fly, and it allows folks a chance to get the support of the nuttiest, without openly campaigning to them.

The Tea Party is the evolution of Astroturf, and taken to the next level. Less about distraction, than as a disingenuous bludgeon to threaten Congresscritters with and for the AEI and Neocons talking points to be embraced by the masses that those Ivory Tower types don't want to get too close to. Having a "third party" to carry water for them suits their purposes, and gives them the insulation that they need.

It's not that she has notes that doesn't matter at all. If she had a notecard with a couple points on it. I'd say no big deal, she has points she wants to make sure to mention. ((Though I know some would be just as critical of moreseo if she had notes at the Q&A.)) She tries to cheat and pulls it off as well as a middle schooler facing his first big exam.

On top of this she criticizes Obama in almost every one of her speeches for using a teleprompter, something every president has done.

/leaving out that, even using her crib notes, she still sounds like a moron.

She loves herself some fiscal Conservatism, yet left Wasilla swimming in debt.

Don't you think the Tea Party might be more analagous to Howard Dean jettisoning the hard core crazies on the left to the Green Party in the wake of the 2004 election?

There are some differences in the origin of the organizations, but I think this is a real effort by the GOP to move a little left.

By embracing the Neoconservative points possible, and threatening any Congresscritter who might think about breaking ranks with this sort of Astroturf?

No. No, I don't think this is in any way, shape or form of trying to push the party Left. It is very much the opposite of that.

This is not a jettisoning of anyone. It is a false flag to appear to be "populist" to get folks to put pressure on Congresscritters to HOLD THE LINE and NOT turn left.

The Tea Party represents a possible schism within my party, and they are firmly on the side of the most entrenched of the Neocons to KEEP the party from sliding away from policies that have been proven disastrous, but actually admitting that these policies have failed is anathema to these folks.

Or a brain?

She wrote down seven words, and even then, had to cross one out. Call me crazy, but even I can memorize four concepts and code phrases before a gig that's paying me $100,000 to speak at it - even if my handlers gave me those concepts and code phrases five seconds before I walked out on stage. (I've given live presentations to technical audiences, so, yeah, I'm familiar with stage fright, but she's a politician desirous of the limelight - shouldn't even be a challenge.)

In a conference in which she railed against the use of a teleprompter by Obama. Classic.

Communication can be an attempt to convey actual information, an attempt to convey emotions, or whatever. Little Sarah conveys emotions to the right wing. They lap it up, and it's dangerous as hell.

Sarah's lies and shallow representations of important issues have nothing to do with information, and that's where we are making a serious mistake.

Little Sarah is the front person for the party of corporate greed. Anybody who can get folks to agree with her that Republicans represent "the people" is not communicating based on facts. People are not that stupid.

The right wing is framing the debate to be the feelings of voters. The Democrats can nip this easily, but our communication has to change.

Not very many people have heard the speech yet, cause she cutesy smacked her lips about 2000 times throughout the speech. It was the worst part of the speech.

This is going to be a huge week in comedy. She flubbed dozens of lines in that speech, jumped all over the place and restarted a dozen times.

It didn't look like she had put more than 5 minutes to prepare, and that was to write some crap on her hand.

It was 99% attack with constant whining about how her great ideas are not being listened to. She introduced exactly zero new ideas into the speech. Palin brought absolutely nothing to the table other than old lines to attack Obama.

We're not to notice that we have a small, but apparently easily led, portion of the country being agitated by current and former political figures advocating armed, violent action, claiming everything from taxation without representation to forced disarmamentm, to disrupt the current administration solely to benefit a single political party?

No, I'm not kidding. I'm really impressed with how sharp most folks are. The key is the message, it need not be conveying information or facts.

The voters are emotional and it's akin to having a rational discussion with someone who only wants to get you to understand how they feel and that you have to feel just like they do. You can't win playing Spock.

Little Sarah rags on Obama for using a teleprompter. This pitch is not based on facts, every Republican president used them. It's an emotional plea. Therefore someone wrote on her hand. She did not use a teleprompter.

Because of the crossout and shallowness, I think it may have been intentionally displayed. A visual of the Republican pitch. It wouldn't be out of character for them. It may have been someone's idea, not Little Sarah's.

BrotherMalcolm: I do not know about the fiscal position of Wasilla - but while Governor Alaska as a whole did fairly well.

Wasilla's budget took a big hit while she was in charge. For one thing, she pushed through a big sports arena the town neither needed nor could afford. If memory serves, she left the town of 6,000 with nearly $20 million in debt.

And I do know for a fact that one of the ways by which Ms Palin served her constituents so well as governor is by raising taxes on the oil companies in Alaska. An actual windfall profits tax based on the price of oil. That tax raise let her cut a bigger check to every Alaskan that year. You're always popular when you're giving money away. Think she'd ever raise taxes again? Especially at the national level?

And she brought in $27 million in earmarks to Wasilla over the second half of her service there. Something else she decries when anyone else does it. So, bring in $27 million in outside money AND leave the town with $20 million in debt, in just six years? That is nearly $8000 spent per person without anyone in the town paying for it - the rest of us paid for more than half of it, and they'll have to pay for the rest of it with interest. While she's gone from the scene, and taking no responsibility.

BrotherMalcolm: It isn't a big deal, it's more of the same from this woman. Someone so armored in her own idea of right and correct, that she marches on without much introspection or thought, because that would require her to actually examine her views and positions. She represents the death of ideas to ideology, and the cheers for this only prove that it's better to be popular than smart...

Did you know that you can hold a degree in something and still hold those that practice with in that degree in contempt!? Did you know that?
So no hypocrisy there!

You cannot seriously doubt that he investigation - none of which have held water - are not partisan...I mean come on. The media spent more time investigating a late comer to the game than they ever did (or will) investigating this disaster of a Pres (Obama).

For a conservative to have to write energy and taxes on their hand shows exactly how much depth they really have on the topics. She is a political dilettante who has no business leading anyone.

Another thing. This wasn't her speech. It was a Q & A session. Did she get the questions prior? Did a staffer write those three and a half things on her hand to refer back to when she got stumped by a gotcha question?

dkny: Also, for as often as the right gets on democrats about the stupidest shiat imaginable, the left sure does the same to republicans. This is one of those things. This is stupid. This does not matter.

Well, the democrats have two choices when republicans do stupid shiat:
1) Try to reasonably point out why what they did was stupid.
-This does not work in any effective manner, since if republicans could think and reason, they wouldn't be republicans, now would they?
2) Give them the taste of their own medicine. When republicans give you a turd, give it back to them as a shiat sandwich and make sure they all take a bite.
-This doesn't work, either, because republicans have a poor memory and forget that they themselves were doing the same thing not 20 minutes before. However, it does provide a measure of catharsis.

You can choose between two ineffective options; do you choose the one that provides no relief and isn't fun, or do you choose the one that provides no relief but is fun?

She does, but she has no integrity. Just keep saying whatever they want to hear, and ride it as far as it will go.

John McCain turned into the same person after Bush II beat him in the 2000 election.

Most politicians are guilty of it to varying degrees, but those two are the worst.

Is it something you wear until he comes home from Iraq? It's kinda what I was thinking it was.

But it doesn't surprise me that people are mocking her for showing respect & admiration for her son.

Yes, if he's a POW or MIA. Is he?

Interesting that you're more concerned with people's response to her disrespect for POW and MIA soldiers while co-opting a sign of respect for THEM to AW herself (again) by using her family members.

The bracelet thing is idiotic. 1 pct of the population is doing The Hard Work and deserve to be recognized by the other 99 pct at every available opportunity.

That doesn't change the fact that she's a grade A attention whore and only wears the damn thing when she's on camera, but the bracelet itself is anything BUT disrespectful.

I submitted that story but it never went green. It also talks about how they refused public document requests and shut out newspapers and whatnot, so I made a joke about how global warming deniers were false -- climategate and all -- cause it was funny to tweak the tits of the all Palin supporting retards who wined about the CRU's blocking access to information and blackballing journals when their hero was doing the same.

I would have loved to have seen the hilarious, spinning, spinning, spinning defenses of the hypocrisy in that thread too. On the other hand, between this thread and that one, if only one could go green, this one's good just for the POW/MIA bracelet.

True. Romney will have to raise more money than Obama just so he can spend it trying to convince the fundees to vote for a "cult member."

The Mormons did a lot to get themselves accepted by mainstream Christians with their major support of the anti-gay marriage props, though. Considering the founder of the LDS church once ran for president, it wouldn't shock me if the whole Mormons giving $20M to stop gay marriage thing wasn't a cynical ploy to help Romney get elected. But that's crazy tin-foil hat conspiracy stuff...

Whats always struck me as funny is, she got famous by using a teleprompter to give a speech someone else wrote (and didnt even write for her, it was written for any vice candidate chosen and then had words added to make it suit the eventual choice) which she just picked up and read. That speech was in fact the only successful public speech she has ever given. The lulz at the media for reporting it as if it was in some way her words were epic.

And she mentions teleprompters without blushing?

Interesting. That might not be so bad. It might attract fiscal conservative/social liberals to the Democratic party and have the run be more about whether the candidates are fiscally conservative or liberal, and social progressivism would become de facto, if not de jure.

The marginalization of the right by Republicans and the Tea Party would end up with a resurgence of lessons learned from the blue dog wing oh who am I kidding, it doesn't matter how smart the population gets, half of the them will always be of below average intelligence.

About 482,000 Registered voters.
In 2006 Palin received 114,697 votes, or about 48% of the total.

You know, in a thread that's really about the GOP projecting everything they actually do themselves upon their opponents, its really weird and lame that you would claim that somehow referring to Sarah's speaking fees represents "dog whistle politics".

Bill Clinton gets paid a lot of money because he used to be the President of the United States, and despite some personal failings, is one very smart individual.

Sarah, on the other hand, is a mirage made up of the most earnest, but unsupported, wishes and dreams of her nutball base.

I was going to respond, but this is all you need to know.

Sarah Palin governed 698,473 people for two and a half years (966 days, to be precise) before she quit to do other things (while blackballing newspapers, denying access to public documents, and bullying a state trooper). Bill Clinton governed 250,000,000 people for a full two elected terms totalling 8 years (2923 days, counting Jan 20 2001) (surviving constant sniping and harassment from Republicans all along the way).

Even disregarding the fact that Palin was never harassed over a blowjob by a person who gave their cancer-stricken wife a divorce to hook up with his mistress, just looking at price commanded vs. experience:

Clinton's speaking fee (in cents) per person governed per day in office (35000000 / 250000000 / 2933) = 0.0000477 cents per person governed per day in office

Palin's speaking fee (in cents) per person governed per day in office (10000000 / 700000 / 266) = 0.0537 cents per person governed per day in office

In other words, taking into consideration the amount of people governed and the duration of that governing, Sarah Palin charges 1126 times as much as Clinton does by factoring in practical experience.

Doesn't hold a candle my farking ass. Remember that the next time you biatch about liberal elitism and merit vs. reward.

Came here to say this. The cheat sheet she had on her southpaw wasn't just the prime core 'values' for the [f]right[ened] wing. It's their Duckspeak. If Mitt Romney hit himself with a hammer, his GOP reflexes should have him exclaim "bad taxes!" instead of "fffffuuuuuuuu-". She had energy (oil). She had taxes. She actually needed to remind herself of the talking points? Not refined use of language (example: say unemployment slump instead of business slump because the markets have done great under Obama). But things she should know in her sleep.

Is she really so confused, she doesn't even know what she's supposed to be FOR.

I know I've lambasted Republicans for not actually having any ideas that will work. I really had no idea their leaders didn't have any ideas because they couldn't hold thoughts in their minds for longer than goldfish.

Since the GOP 'principles' are now purely about what ad copy is going to increase their electoral chances, the precise presentation of their 'issues' is critical to their success. It really is the logical extension of this set of affairs that they would rally around a candidate whose main attribute seems to be her lack of awareness at the emptiness of her words.

When there is no message, the messaging becomes the essence.

A question for you liberals: If the end of the world was about to happen, and you had to write "budget cuts" and "lift American spirits" on your hand to stop the apocalypse, wouldn't you? That's all Palin did. She knows the gays and the liberals and the Jews are going to try and elect Obama to a second term...and then it will be too late. When we look back at this, this may be the moment that Sarah Palin rescued this country from teleprompters and government intervention.

Are you fuc*king serious? See a shrink, loser.

I hate going into every thread where Mike Lowell posts and trying to explain to everyone like yourself that he is doing satire and he does it everywhere. The guy is legendary for WAY WAY over the top satire and it's almost easily detectable. Mike is awesome because the guy does some funny ass stuff and it happens to be so over the top. So any time you see Mike, read it and laugh because that's his gig.

FTFY.

but seriously. False Equivalence is False.

Palin's hand-written (pun intended) notes for a Q & A (not the lecture itself!) =/= Obama using a teleprompter for a speech

further reading (with nice Kerry/Bush examples): here

videocrime: Palin's hand-written (pun intended) notes for a Q & A (not the lecture itself!) =/= Obama using a teleprompter for a speech

I don't know. She made a graspy attack on Obama for using a teleprompter. The teleprompter attacks spring from the fact that according to his critics, Obama cannot interact with the public without reading it off something.

Here we have Palin making crib notes on her hand to interact with the public (and therefore it doesn't matter if it's a Q&A or a lecture). Which wouldn't be such a bad thing if she hadn't made an attack on the President for being unable to do the same.

To examine the situation in a bubble, where we fail to understand what the accusations are, and what the crib notes represent to that argument, is dishonest at least.

shower_in_my_socks: PonceAlyosha: Obama beats Romney hands down. Romney alienates the crazies, who certainly wouldn't vote Obama. Obama gets every minority possible in that match-up.

Less tin-foily: with the recent SCOTUS ruling the idea that Romney could essentially "buy" his way into the White House is much more likely (and chilling).

This raises an interesting strategy: use Palin to scare the GOP into swinging support for a candidate who REALLY "GETS" economics. Someone who has owned companies. Someone who has a LOT OF SUPPORT from the business community (which will present itself in the newly-regained ability for businesses to directly promote a candidate), etc. Doesn't matter if he has no business sense whatsoever - maybe he's owned a baseball team at one time.

Depending on the economy in 2011 we may very well see that it's not the teabaggers calling the shots in the next election (not that I really ever expected that to happen - they're more street theater or performance art than anything else) it'll be big business.

I expect that fundraising will be at FAR more than "record levels" for the 2012 election. It'll be a race of the corporate pocketbooks to buy influence and control the election. Read Clarence Thomas' thoughts on the recent SCOTUS decision to see how enormously messed up things could get (if he gets his way).

We're making fun of it because most responsible, intelligent adults would use note cards for a major public speech; They wouldn't scribble on their hand like a child.

shastacola 2010-02-08 11:36:04 AM
I'll try to explain this to you as simply as I can. Obama wasn't using a teleprompter to "talk to the press", he was giving an education policy speech at the school.

Sarah Palin was not using "crib notes for a speech",she was using crib notes to answer pre-screened questions.

"At least she can think between the lines" No,no she can't, that's why she has to scribble words on her hand like a retard.

"unlike Obama who has to have every word read to him electronically."

Sure. Mine include an outline of the speech, with words or phrases to remind me of the major points I wanted to make, and any particular names/dates/figures/citations I can't trust myself to memorize. On, you know, index cards or something.

I doubt it. I'm reasonably certain she's just an amateur trying really hard to make it in the big leagues. While I think negatively of her views, I don't mean THAT as a negative; there are plenty of people with whom I agree that I believe would be similarly out of their element on the national stage.
