Nice picture but it would be even better with Da Vinci's tricks like the hand across Maude's throat or the extra hand hold ing the knife. Still a cool picture though.

At times Mr. Owens sounds as if he's been hitting the minibar himself. He writes about how Leon Trotsky is "doubly implicated" in the White Russian, first because he helped defeat the anti-Communist White Russian army during the Russian civil war, and second because he later fled to Mexico, "Kahlúa's country of origin." Mr. Owens suggests that the Dude has a kind of "Trotskian positionality."

Billzebub 2009-12-30 10:32:47 AM
I watched again the other day and noticed a couple things for the first time, probably because I usually laugh through them:

1) When the police come over to take The Dude's police report about his car being stolen, ("I wouldn't hold out much hope for the tape deck. Or the Creedence.") the black officer is holding a bowl shaped like a bowling pin and examining it.

2) When The Dude's car is recovered, the officer ("Leads? Oh, yeah, let me check with the boys down at the crime lab.") says, something about how the tape deck and the Creedence were still in the car.

I don't know how many times I've seen that movie, but for some reason, I just noticed those things the other day.

I think you almost always find some little new wrinkle every time you watch.

A friend of my just the other day was told by his father that TBL is a noir detective movie.

A friend of your what? Don't keep us in suspense.

Every Coen movie is a riff on a particular storytelling form. TBL was their take on the SoCal detective film/novel. Raymond Chandler's work particularly informed the story. As film, it really borrowed a lot from Altman's The Long Goodbye. They make a good double feature for those so inclined.

Just now on Charlie Rose Jeff Bridges said The Dude was the role closest to Jeff himself. He even wore his own clothes.

//Oh, nothing. Carry On.
///And The Dude was not a role his mother would be proud of.

I had an idea for TBL video game, with Dude going around collecting clues to get rug back, FPS Walter taking the hill in 'Nam, GTA adventure of Larry stealing Dude's car, Bowl-off against the Jesus, Surf contest w/Donny, street fight against Nihilist, etc....

So many game genres in one ultimate Lebowski challenge.

You could even have a Coitus Challenge. It'd be perfect for the Wii!
