Kick ass as far as I'm concerned. As long as they let us white folk live on the land they buy. I'd be happy to live sustainably under their auspices.

Buying up parts of rural Nebraska is really sticking it to Whitey.

While Indian casinos are pretty much the most pathetic refuge of the dregs of obese, retired humanity busy blowing their Social Security checks one desperate, chain-smoking, slot-machine pull at a time, I have to admit they usally make pretty good food.

The buffet at Cache Creek near Napa is to be particularly recommended, especially on sea-food night.

I think it's cute they think we'll let them keep the land they're "buying".

The only "bad" thing I can see is that when the land is put in "trust" the local government is still responsible for providing services such as sewage and plumbing, but they are not allowed to tax the owners of that property. This could, eventually, put an undue burden on the non-native-American property owners and eventually (if they keep buying up land) lead to an unsustainable situation.

I agree that would be a bad thing, but geez, could you really blame them?

"Putting land in trust creates a burden for local governments because they must still provide services such as sewer and water even though they can't collect taxes on the property,"

Well hell, that's a tradition and way of life that anyone can get behind. Live large on the work of other people. Sure sounds like something to be proud of.

/Lived " out west " around native Americans for 10 years. For every honest respectful honest hard working person you meet there are 20 scam artists , fraudsters, and 'kill whitey' types.

//moved away, quickly. Enjoying rent control, air conditioning and not paying for other people to hate me.

tshetter 2009-12-28 03:10:55 AM
So...how can I put my land in a federal trust to avoid paying local and state taxes on it?

Is it only for the natives or can us white folk get in on this deal?

If it is only for the natives, who can i get to sue on my behalf so i can reap the benefits?

red5ish 2009-12-28 03:11:47 AM
Does protecting their culture and way of life include going back to the stone age and giving up inventions like the wheel?

I welcome our new casino overlords.

One of the examples of Native Americans buying "back" land is Winnebago in Nebraska.

If you don't get what's odd about that then I'm not going to explain it.

tuxedobob 2009-12-28 03:13:34 AM

CowboyNinjaD 2009-12-28 03:15:23 AM
All the local governments have to do is get rid of the current "tax" system and change it over to a "fee" system. So every house hooked up to municipal water and sewer pays a set amount every month. I think many cities already do this anyway.

I find a certain twisted logic here.

Protecting and preserving "Native" language and culture is a good thing. But attempting to protect "American" language and culture is racist and bigoted.

This has to do with the blood rule.

For membership in a tribe you have to have a certain proportion of "true" ancestry.

Which is totally not ignorant, racist or anything like that.

Hi, I'm posting from a reservation. Fun fact: the majority of the "full-blooded" families around here interbred with the Scots and Irish two and a half to three centuries ago. It's why you'll see people with an unbroken lineage clear back to the Trail of Tears with blue eyes.

Why would the Winnebago Tribe need to own land?

Seem to be plenty of campgrounds nearly everywhere.
Heck, they even have an RV park at the MGM Grand in Vegas. So the tribe memebers could see what a real casino is like.

EviLincoln: Buying up parts of rural Nebraska is really sticking it to Whitey.

It's not just Nebraska. Where I grew up in central NY this is happening. It's a big mess -- the Oneidas are suing for half the land in the state (ok I exaggerate), while at the same time buying up land, which some people are suing them over because it takes away taxable property. But at the same time, the Indians currently make PILOTs (payments in lieu of taxes -- basically a gift to the local schools/towns) on land that has always been reservation, even though they're not required to. So if the local govts start collecting taxes on this bought-and-put-into-trust land, the Oneidas will just stop making these PILOTs, which are far more lucrative to the local govts than what they're missing out on now.

Personally I kind of get a chuckle out of it. We screwed them out of their land, and now they're screwing us out of ours, while getting us to finance it.

Fluffball 2009-12-28 03:29:52 AM
Well if they can really make a go at it and become not only self-sustaining but environmentally sustainable I guess one good thing will have come out of the modern myth of the aboriginal American.

/Then again most of the ones I know are fairly trashy
//Trophy hunt regardless of season, run dog fights, hunt by spotlighting deer from a 4x4 and chasing them down with dogs, etc
///Is alright with native hunting rights, but only if they have to do it the way their ancestors did in the exact same garb, with the exact same equipment

Why is it wonderful for them to be using these unfair tax and regulatory advantages to buy land? And land that isn't part of the legal fiction of an independent nation that's used to legalize this special treatment is exempt from state and local taxes and regulations.

Wait, it's okay for your side to ignore the law for - in some cases - several hundred years as long as it's stuff you like, but if the other side starts using the law in ways you don't it's somehow "unfair"? Tough, it's legal. Good for them.

Oh, and I think theyll agree with you on the immigration issue youre pushing, though they might like it retroactive a few hundred years.
