No mention of how high he bounced. I saw a jumper land without any parachute opening from around 8000 feet; he bounced about 6 feet back into the air. He missed the concrete runway by about 10 feet and hit the grass, the best part he lived. The jumper's back was screwed but he did recover. I was already on the ground and watched what happens when a person does not follow simple detailed directions.

Is it just me or is that the most poorly composed article photo ever? Pretty sure the rule of thirds doesn't work that way.

I forget a lot of things. I don't know what I had for breakfast (or any other meal) yesterday, for example.

Somehow I can't imagine jumping out of an aircraft and forgetting to open my parachute.

offacue 2009-12-19 05:59:23 PM
Maybe if he had been paying attention and opened his parachute when he should have he wouldn't have made it to being a headline on fark. Is that good or bad. You decide.

this

There's a slight difference between 'parachute doesn't open' and 'he forgot to open it until it was too late'.

steveGswine 2009-12-19 06:00:14 PM
Well why not jump again?

It's not like the next time, the parachute will EXPLODE or something... I mean, how much worse could it get?

James Boole is a friend of mine (I'm a wingsuit skydiver as well). His accident was far more complicated (and slower speed) than the headline makes it sound. It was certainly a hard impact, but he lucked out in several ways.

Additionally, the jump was far riskier than a typical skydive. Any time you're flying over uneven terrain (as in, not simply over a flat surface), you obviously have to navigate well (and you can't merely use an altimeter). Tack on the fact that it was over snow (and therefore hard to gauge distance), and you can see how this would happen.

Do you drive a car? Did you know that driving 10,000 in sedan on US highways is statistically as risky as 17 skydives? You daredevil, you. I guess only fools drive cars.

That happened to a friend of mine.

It's not a joke. Went skydiving, parachute didn't open. He broke most of the bones in his body but he recovered and continues to skydive.

I personally wouldn't do it, but whatever.

/cool story, etc.

Um, did you READ the article? He landed on snow. That's how he survived. Sure, it hurt. And it broke his back. But...

If he hit ground, he'd be a pancake.

I've never even heard of a sedan that could go that fast, let alone driven one.

Do beginner skydivers have to do their first jump with another guy strapped onto their back? I was thinking I'd try it when I'm too old/depressed to care about splattering myself, but having a guy strapped to your back seems really, really gay (NTTAWWT). Plus at 6'4" and 210lbs (all of it heart) I'm not sure two people wouldn't exceed the parachute weight limit.

If your fat ass out masses a 15 ton sheridan then yeah it'll be hard to find a parachuet big enough.

You dont have to do a "tandem" for your first jump. You can opt to go the way of A.F.F. (accelerated free fall" classroom. 2 USPA certified instructors will hang on to you until its time to open your canopy. Then you fly yourself down. There are 7 levels to pass in A.F.F. to get your basic class A jumping license.

It can be a spendy proposition to get through training+equipment. Once the license and gear are out of the way, a jump typically only costs around $20 depending on the dropzone. So, its actually fairly cheap as far as hobby's go.

It's a full body shot. You have too look very closely to see that the rest of his body is squished really really small.

As an avid technical Scuba diver I have to say skydivers are pussy's*.

Unlike Scuba, with skydiving there is no question you will eventually reach the surface.

One way or another.
