It's called a HUMAN INTEREST STORY you dope. These people are our friends, our families, our lovers. They are our neighbors, our peers, our allies.

Also, I am probably the cheapest P.R. agent in the Boston area and this woman happens to be my only client.

So BACK OFF JACK, cause this cat has been backed into a desperate corner and THIS KITTIE HAS CLAWS!

FTFA: Melrose woman's goose statue has become a local landmark

Well to be fair, in some places they give you directions based upon landmarks like "The place where they killed that fella" or "Where the orphanage was before it burnt down when Mr Henshaw's kid went nuts" or "Where the old mill used to be before they paved it over to put in a crapload of condo's and about 8 Starbucks"

So, having a goose as a landmark really isn't all that bad...

Dewey, a retired nurse for the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office who lives on Main Street near the Wakefield town line, decorates the goose to match the holidays, major sports games, or whatever feels right at the time. She buys many of her 25-30 outfits from a catalog, such as this graduation cap and gown which matches the colors worn by Melrose High students at their commencement ceremony.

9 0 2 1 oh my god. That's awful.

I get the feeling the next story we'll be hearing about this thing is that a bunch of drunk idiots from Woburn decided to steal the statue, and they spend the next two weeks mailing the newpaper photos of the goose (no doubt wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigarette) in a strip club, standing at a urinal, or on a rollercoaster.

/Although in retrospect it is a bit cold for rollercoasters...

I was OK until the picture of the goose in wedding garb, with the article saying local brides want to have their picture taken with the dang thing.
Thems some strange folk. I hope I never end up there with car trouble.

Wish I had the Zits comic strip. The gag went like this:

Dad: What wrong,son?
Son: This lame website hasn't updated in three days.
Dad: That too bad. How much are you paying them?
Son: Nothing,it's free.
Dad: There goes your leverage.

Thank the FSM the goose is wearing clothes or there would be national outrage!

ptomblin 2009-12-18 04:28:44 PM
When I lived in West Quebec there was an artist who lived on highway 105 near Chelsea who had a gigantic flamingo on his front yard. This thing was about 6 feet high. He dressed it up for the season. It was very festive. Not too useful as a landmark because basically you can only go up or down 105 from there.

These goose statues are everywhere in Western PA. WTF makes this one special?

My aunt still does.

My friend does as well, but she found the goose on the side of the road and she's a bit more tongue-in-cheek about it.

There's a catalog for this sort of holiday apparel? Is it very gay?

obzerver 2009-12-18 04:52:46 PM
Goose statues, which can cost more than $120, are a target for vandalism. Dewey has replaced hers five times, she said, noting neighbors sometimes give money to cover some of the replacement costs.

How ironic. I happen to have five I'm willing to sell at a discounted price of $75.00 each. Only because I'm in the holiday spirit.

Living a few miles from Boston, Dewey also has several sports costumes, including Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins outfits. "People say 'why do you do it?' and I say 'cause I never had a Barbie doll growing up,'" Dewey said. "Plus, it makes me smile."

I'd wager she enjoys the company that comes along with it (kids, neighbors, brides(?)) too.

Y'know, I'd rather have these kids of stories (especially if it was only online) than the crap my local once somewhat respected newspaper prints. Like a shopping column, and a section "just for women!" that makes me want to renounce my own damn gender.

That was kind of a cute slideshow. And brings some people happiness.

What the hell.

C'est la vie.

When you aren't willing/able to report on all of Obama's failures, you have to fill the void with something.

Probably not, but at least you'd have a shot at it.

I often wonder about the often espoused notion that it is the newspaper's own fault for not adapting to the rise of the internet, or that the music industry is just too old and greedy to follow the course of action that would allow it to survive pirating.

When newspapers move to a subscription site, they get scooped and their work is sold for free by ad sites, if they have a free ad site, they get scooped and their work is sold for free by somewhere else.

If the music industry sell on the internet, like iTunes, they still lose a lot to pirating.
What are these mystical new patterns that the industry can follow that somehow stop this?

Has it occurred to you (no on in particular) that pirating and scooping aren't a healthy part of product competition, and that we are in fact undermining our capitalist system by participating in quasi-theft, rather than giving our business to groups practicing methods that we actually like?

I want more than hard news from my newspaper, thanks. The occasional fluff story is fun and doesn't harm their prestigious award winning reputation thingy.
