That headline actually made me chuckle.

Yeah great headline, sad story

/kinda sad anyway, he knew the risks & broke lots of laws to do it
//almost had the "B" portion myself a LONG time ago
///looking back, regret not being able to do so
//ah well
/Sat night slashie fun

Archie Goodwin [TotalFark] 2009-12-05 11:50:33 PM
He had a slight pulse but was pronounced dead at a hospital in the nearby town of Casa Grande.

I'm guessing his pulse would have been around 60Hz.

Scary? Not so much as dumbass. WTF? Jumping off anything with a parachute with power lines near by is stupid. :-|

/Darwin Award?

Way to research that jump, dumbass.

Oh, and it's Pima county.

7wolf 2009-12-06 07:36:46 AM
I lol'd. He probably didn't deserve it but damn, that's gotta be one of the dumbest, if more interesting ways to go. Like sticking a fork in the toaster but on a grander scale.

FTFY. Jumping out of perfectly good airplanes that are going to land pretty soon anyway: also stupid. Yeah, yeah, great fun I'm sure, just not for me. And BASE jumping strikes me as extra stupid. No time to deploy a reserve chute = no thank you.

At least he died doing what he loved.

FTFA:
23-year-old Darrell Dunafon and two friends broke into a cell tower site about 30 miles south of Phoenix on Friday night

The whole gig with BASE jumping is that you get a charge out of it.
But on a Friday night? Were these idiots wired or what?
How ya gonna see what's around the tower when someone's turned out the lights?
I betcha they were juiced.

What a base jump going wrong might look like (new window)

\he had to spend a long time in hospital but I think he's okay now

I'm always interested in people who skydive and then lord it over every one they meet...like they're real badasses. I guess we are supposed to be impressed?

Why someone would perform such a stunt has left me nonplussed. Unfortunately, it has left the jumper non-pulsed.

I be wondering how he gets cooked. Landing or snagging a wire won't do it unless he grounds somewhere. What happened, did he grab a tower? The cables are usually too far apart to reach over and grab one, and if he did he would be toast, no pulse at all because no fluids.

Something else happened not in the report. His buddies threw him a rope or something.

Not that I've ever used a parachute, but that might have helped him reach more wires or ground on something.

Many women find men who put their lives at great peril for no good reason very attractive. This, incidentally, is why the Beta males of the world are still around - someone has to comfort the widow.

Or, it's that they know how life-insurance works. ;)

if I base jumped, I would not want a parachute, instead, tie an extension cord around my ankle, it will hang up on something on the way down.

On lines carrying that much power, spacing is everything. The electricity will jump to anything near it. I am guessing that his chute bridged the gap between two or more lines, probably one on top of the other.

Whoa Dude, guess he caught a buzz, huh?
Base jumping is a great way of chlorinating the gene pool!
When I was a kid we had to sneak up on roosting Condors and grab em by the legs, it was almost like base jumping, except for the fact that the condors always grabbed us back and ripped our skulls and ate our branze, so now you gno why I'm so dum b.
You can get the same kind of flight experience with a warning claxon if you are a 70 pound kid or oriental adult (in Veyutnayum we discovered a 70 pound rice burner could be a mean lil bastich).
All ya gotta do is grab the tail feathers of a peacock or a wild turkey, and for a little while you is airborn!
The turkeys and peacocks don't peck out you'r branze like condors, but they do drop you from unimagined altitudes when thier tailfeathers came out.
If you survived you could make yerself a real injun head-dress, and do the hokey pokey for tourists, usually they'd give you some wampum, but it didn't matter if they didn't since the other jubilant delinquents you knew burglarised their cars while they was a watchin the wild west show...mostly got bumper stickers, tee shirts, and peanut brittle made by real Amish folks, but sometimes you'd get a purse with all sorts of cash money in it, which we spent on Archie comics and Woosie soda pop, sometimes we'd buy conundrums from the machine down at the Sinclare station cause they made the best water balloons in the world...we used em for the grand finale of our rain dance, them tourists got the water and we split like Ahab the Arab, The sheik of the burnin sand on his camel named Clyde, goin to see Fatima.
And now You Know The REST of the story!
