Good.

Incidentally, it isn't to protect the idiots. When they jump, depending on the exact geometry and where their chair was in relation to a tower, they can twang the cable like a big guitar string by jumping. Other people can get thrown around badly, and it's possible to even derail the cable if you get an unlucky resonance in the system.

Which is also why there are all the signs about "don't swing the chairs"

i am pretty sure jumping off chairlifts should be a self-correcting mechanism of nature.

Came here to ask "why?" This makes sense.

what about pushing people off of them?

As mentioned above jumping off a moving chairlift is a bad idea as there is a good chance you will derail the lift and perhaps injure many people in the process.
Not so good jumping off a broken down one either, wait for the ski patrol to evac you or the lift to be run on backup power.
You should be prepared ie. dressed for the conditions so that spending an hour or so stranded isn't going to be too uncomfortable.

/long time Red Mountain skier and worked ski patrol for many years,
we have the worst lifts anywhere, used to carry my evac gear freeskiing. This is why I ski tour, climbing skins don't break down.
//lifts here still suck, skiing is real good

FTA:
Most incidents on the popular hill involve offensive language, pushing and shoving, or people entering areas that are below their skill levels, Younker said.

So if I ride double diamonds all day I am not allowed to end the day on a nice circle or square cruiser?

I got stuck on a chairlift in the U.P. once for over an hour and I was 2 chairs away from unloading.

The first group that was just a few feet away eventually jumped off and ski'd away. They didn't have too far to drop. I estimated my distance to be a good 25-30 feet in the air.

I was told by the chairlift operator to sit tight and be patient. But it was cold and windy at the top, and this was January of 1979 one of the coldest months on record. So I just had to sit there and endure the wind whipping around and beating the shiat outta me.

But back to the jumpers, when they jumped off it got the chairs behind them (me included) bouncing pretty good. It got me thinking "Wow if they derailed this thing....I'm going down!"

When they finally got the lift back up and running I ski'd to the bottom and found a couple of my friends. Told 'em where I was for the past hour....they LOL'd. I think I ski'd a run or two more then spent the rest of the day in the bar.

/I still get cold thinking about it to this day
//the winters of '78 and '79 were two of the harshest winters I ever remember here in the Midwest
///but the farking skiing was GREAT.
