Too bad he didn't fire himself as football coach a decade ago. He's been coaching for the record since 2000, plain and simple, holding onto some vain hope that Paterno would quit (or die) before he would or that his teams would miraculously do better than Penn State every year.

Oh, well. I hate Florida State anyway, and his quitting isn't going to change my mind on that.

Do you know how I know that you are a PSU fan? Actually, I dislike both Bowden and Paterno and think they should both step down.

Actually, I despise Penn State, too, but this wasn't about Joe "the toughest game i ever coached was against the 72-0 victory against that 0-9 juggernaut Sister Rosalie's School of Sewing" Paterno. Every team he coaches against, including the cupcakes, is just the best team around and he's just thrilled to beat them. he's the only person I've ever seen that can turn humility into arrogance without even realizing he's doing it.

I see your point, and I was actually going to go to a cheap shot at you regarding the Iowa/PSU game if you responded admitting to being a PSU fan. But as a Hawkeye fan, I cannot be over-gloating as they did not win the Big 10 and pretty much had a lucky season.

So basically, Bowden got around scholarship rules by giving a bunch of his football players basketball scholarships. Nice.

Okay, marginally on topic here - WTF was the FSU play where the entire offensive line didn't move after the snap. FSU ran it 3 times last weekend on defensive offside (was that why they didn't move??); but they ran it another time when there was no call and the QB got creamed.

Why would the offensive line do that? Is that a real play, or what?

Without that, the Knicks never would have got Charlie Ward. I believe he is the only Heisman winner ever to play in the NBA.

at Howard College in Birmingham, Ala., from 1953 to 1954, Bowden also coached the basketball team, which compiled a 23-2 record in two seasons.

That excellent record was no reflection on Bowden as a basketball coach, he said.

"We were basically playing high schools."

I'm sure the football teams he played while at Howard were real powerhouses, too. It always pissed me off that those wins counted toward his I-A/FBS total. I'm glad he's not getting the record.

To be fair, Bowden makes FIVE times as much as Joe Paterno, yet has never made a sizeable donation to FSU (unlike JoePa).

Are you referring to the record held by Eddie Robinson?

Who knew JoePa liked the FSU babes?

No, I'm referring to the I-A/FBS record.

Did you see it that time?

Saw this line, was immediately going to make a Holtz reference, and am happy someone beat me to it.

rynthetyn: So basically, Bowden got around scholarship rules by giving a bunch of his football players basketball scholarships. Nice.

Up until 1966, this was VERY common, especially in the South. It ended in 1966 because the NCAA passed the "Bear Bryant Rule". It basically said that a scholarship athlete who played football would have his scholarship count towards the football team's total number of scholarships. Bear would sign players to whatever scholarship the school had available. Got a promising lineman? Swimming scholarship. At least Bowden had the basketball scholarship guys playing basketball...

He should have been secretly replaced like JoePa about 10 years ago.

Except that when they count the total wins, they always count Bowden's wins at Furman (which is I-AA).

When Title IX went into effect, he wanted a bunch of his players to get sex change operations. Only the place kicker agreed.

Lou was able to pull it off with a sense of self-deprecating irony that Paterno couldnt muster.

Digitalstrange 2009-12-03 12:22:12 AM
And more importantly Lou talked up opposing teams BEFORE the game to keep his team focused on them and not give them any bulletin board material to focus their hate. It's a little different from Paterno's acting like world beaters AFTER beating Sister Mary's school for the blind.
