Most of them are schadenfreude TV shows that attract an audience with self-esteem issues who like to see other people humiliated.

With the exception of The Amazing Race... great travel log show.

I don't watch television. I don't even own a television. Notice I didn't say TV. TV is a nickname, and nicknames are for friends. And television is no friend of mine.

No, no, no! The only great reality shows were the time-exploration ones on PBS. Frontier House, World War II House, and Manor (Edwardian) House were the only reality TV shows that I ever watched that didn't make me want to gouge out my eyes, tear off my ears and stomp on all the various parts until they are nothing but a bloody, gelatinous stain.

Then again, I also love Project Runway and Tabitha's Salon Takeover.

I dunno. I think I've watched every season of the Amazing Race but I had to give up half way through this season. It's getting too predictable with boring challenges and even more boring contestants. The best contestants are the couples that hate being around each other and constantly argue.

Have you not been paying attention to the gay brothers? They've been constantly arguing for weeks.

And the water slide.

If your going to make a list of the "decade's top 10 reality shows", you might want to include some of the good ones like: Fear Factor, Parking Wars, any of the judge shows like Judge Judy or Divorce Court, Cheaters, and if you have the Canadian Discovery Channel shows like Canada's Worst Handyman Canada's Worse Driver.

/How is Flavor of Love even remotely considered good?

The first season of the Apprentice was only reality TV I could ever really get into. Absolutely facinating challenges for the contestants. If I ever get to meet Amy in real life, I would love to ask her how she was able to handle Omarosa while everyone else failed.

Too bad they made every episode afterwards "create an ad campaign for our sponsor!".

Nope. I gave up on the show 4 or 5 weeks ago. They're part of the reason I stopped watching. Two fit guys should not be competing as a team. It's just not fair. You just know they'll probably win it all. CBS cast them because they're gay brothers thinking it'd be risque and an interesting storyline...it's not.

Another here for Amazing Race. As bummed as I am about FT/BE being gone, the fact that he took that long to unscramble that word was sad.

That said, Sam and Dan are irritating as all hell. I really hope they get utterly humiliated next week.

There are different tiers to the reality genre. American Idol, America's got Talent, etc. are talent shows. Glorified Gong Shows if you will.

Survivor and The Amazing Race are classified (legally) as gameshows and have to conform to certain laws. Content is edited, shown out of context, out of order, etc., but the producers can not legally do a lot of things and it is monitored. The shows are edited and sculpted to form storylines, but what happens, happens.

Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, etc. are purely for entertainment. I don't know if there is a prize for them, but it is pretty much garbage.

There is definitely differences in the quality and the "worthiness" of the different reality shows. People bag on reality shows casting a large net over everything that falls under that umbrella. The big 2 (Survivor and TAR) are as good as most scripted drama, and better than a lot of it.

nagaisu 2009-12-01 04:06:37 PM
I can't watch any of those, never would. I have to say it's hard for me to make fun of people who do when I look at some of the crap shows that people get nostalgic over in these threads.

That being said, I fail to see how they left out the 800 pound ratings gorilla that is American Idol and all of the shlock that it spawned.

Of course, Dan reneging on the agreement to share with him didn't help!

I love TAR, but yeah, it's easy to tease out what the storyline with The Gays is: they're backstabbers and they're going to get their comeuppance. I'd still sleep with both of them, as long as they agreed not to talk, damn those Valley Girl accents drive me nuts.

I think at this point I'm rooting for Brian and Ericka also.

Sam and Dan: We're stealing your taxi, fark off, Brian and Ericka!
Brian and Ericka: WTF?

Megan and Cheyne: We're stealing your taxi, Sam and Dan.
Sam and Dan: What? You can't, it's our taxi, he's waiting for us! (pouts, whines, etc.)

Dan: Big Easy, let's work together on this.
BE: Sure. Every time I get it wrong, I'll tell you so you don't use it.

Later
Dan: I got it! Fark you BE, I'm not sharing, since I figured it out on my own.

Sam and Dan: Those guys suck, they're just following us everywhere we're going!

Next Episode
Sam and Dan: Follow the team in that taxi!

mjbok 2009-12-01 04:24:00 PM
Henry Holland: /Brian and Ericka FTW

Seriously? She is absolutely worthless. I see him as a henpecked guy who realizes he married (way) out of his league. She is a constant complainer and has added very little to their team. I think she would have struggled with the phone challenge and probably would have given up (similar to how she almost did with the bell challenge.)

FT/BE were kind of bullies. See the one taxi situation, and the mind games with the scared girl at the water slide. I was glad to see them booted, but would rather have seen them win instead of Brian/Ericka.

Cheyenne and the chick deserve to win, but I think B/E will because of something that was said two episodes ago. The brothers were asked at the mat who they were scared of and Phil pointed out that they weren't worried about B/E, which I think was foreshadowing that they win.

The girl at the waterslide made me want to put my fist through the TV. That team was dating, and if he stayed with her after she potentially cost him 500K he is a better man than I.
