ESPN2 had a whole special on the tuck rule controversy the other night. Or maybe it was all about the Patriots and they just spent a good part of the show talking about it. I don't know, I only caught the last 20 minutes or so. Either way, it was pretty interesting.

vygramul [TotalFark] 2009-12-01 10:55:23 AM
That's a pretty good list. You may not agree on the order, but those are all great plays.

The tuck rule is infuriatingly subjective and that's why it's stupid.

Racht [TotalFark] 2009-12-01 10:56:06 AM
It looks like they mean "most memorable" rather than best, considering the tuck rule play was just a fumble that turned out to legally be an incomplete pass. Also probably my favorite game of all time. But I'm a sucker for snow.

There are clear cases of pass interference and holding, and there are good reasons to disallow them as allowing them would change the fundamental nature of the game. Not so with the tuck rule. Even in clear cases, causing it a fumble would not change the way football is played. There's no benefit to the rule. They're exceptions that are called only a couple of times a season, if that many.

FTA:

2. Tyree's catch, Super Bowl, 2008

The greatest play in Super Bowl history wasn't good enough to get to No. 1 on this list? There's one reason: The awe-inspiring throw and catch (by Eli Manning(notes) and David Tyree(notes), respectively) was only possible because of a massive defensive breakdown by the Pats line. (In this, it reminds me of Jason Giambi not sliding on the famous Jeter flip play.)

WHAT?! They had a fistful of Eli Manning's jersey! That's a "breakdown"? Fark that!

Tyree's catch is #1 in my book.

/yes, my opinion is biased because I'm a Giants fan. So?

And yes, I remember that play. It was the same year Rush Limbaugh declared the only reason anyone thought McNabb was any good was because he was black.

I'm a pats fan and I agree with you. Manning was being swarmed and precariously close to in-the-grasp, his effort and Tyree's made that a spectacular play.

/Defending a Manning- i think i just threw up in my mouth a little

But I might put his botched snap recovery and scramble against the Rams for a first down (pops) two years ago as a top play of the decade. (Sorry about the quality. Best I could find.)

Yeah the Pats D Line didn't break down, they pretty much had manning in the grasp but let go too soon/Manning got away.

I'm a Packer fan and off the top of my head i can think of the following

Vinatieri wins SB in 2002 vs. Rams
Favre throws away Divisional game vs. Eagles
Favre throws away Championship game vs. Giants in Ice Bowl II
Tyree's catch
Saints/Jaguars CRAZY ASS FINISH that eliminates the Saints from playoff contention
The Greatest Game to Watch Ever (Tuck Rule/Snow Bowl)
Kasay wins then loses Super Bowl for Panthers
Hasselbeck "we want the ball and we're going to win" @ Green Bay
JErome Harrison 100 yd INT return for TD
Cromartie returns missed FG 109 yds vs Vikes

Donnchadha 2009-12-01 01:34:25 PM
3. Roethlisberger saves Bettis from infamy, AFC divisional playoff, 2006

...

The Colts still had a chance to win, but Mike Vanderjagt missed a 42-yarder as time expired.

Nuh-uh! The Steelers still had to kill 17 seconds after the missed field goal. This list is totally worthless!

I think that was just another opportunity to hate on the Cowboys, and add the "playoff wins since _______" comment out into the public again.

There are lots of great plays out there. Including that one was insane.

MugzyBrown: My favorite part of the 4th & 26 play was the moment in Overtime when Favre threw a punt to Brian Dawkins.

My favorite part is that the best play of the decade for the Eagles came in the divisional round of the playoffs, and that they lost the NFC title game at home the following week.

This play, on the other hand:

Yeah, pretty meaningful.

Santonio Homes bringing it down with his fingertips while tiptoeing to stay in bounds? Best catch I've seen in a big game this decade. Better than Tyree, especially since Santonio still plays on Sundays whereas Tyree has gone the way of Ki-Jana Carter.

Great play but the throwback was easily number 1 to normal fans who arent fans of either team

The top three should be (1) helmet catch, (2) Music City Miracle, (3) Kevin Dyson and Mike Jones at the goal line. In that order, clearly, and everything else should be vying for a distant fourth.

I think Devon Hester running the Superbowl XLI kick-off back for a touchdown should be on the list. That was just mind-boggling.

Typical of the Bills that they were on the wrong end of the #1 play on that list. And I don't care what you say, it still looks like a forward lateral to me.

That was the last time the Bills appeared in a playoff game too. It's been a long, stupid decade.

tforbes 2009-12-01 02:00:15 PM
Subby, that play is called "4th and Forever" btw, and yes it was a ridiculous play, highlighted by the prevent defense, preventing the leading team from winning.

I was thinking about that one, and it was indeed mind-boggling; but if it were on the list, it would be the only entry that didn't directly affect the outcome of a game (i.e., the Bears still lost). That might have disqualified it.

Kevin Dyson's Superbowl stretch? Why would you name the play after the player that failed?

"Mike Jones' Superbowl Winning Tackle" seems much better.

Nah, you're not biased. It's the best football play of the decade. It was an amazing scramble, throw, and catch to decide the Super Bowl. It doesn't get better than that play. That play is why we watch football.

NaziKamikaze 2009-12-01 02:06:45 PM
FreakinB: I clicked thinking "the Tyree catch/the best moment of my sports fan life better be #1." Then I saw what was #1. Can't really argue with it.

I can. While exciting, to me it looked like an illegal forward pass. So that takes away from it. Aside from that (especially since they could not overturn it during the game as video was inconclusive), while it did allow the Titans their first step into the run to the Super Bowl, they ended up losing.

As opposed to Tyree's catch (which definitely includes Manning's pocket escape - nearly as exciting), which allowed them to win a Super Bowl, and to bring down what seemed like an immortal and undefeatable team. It had so much more behind it.

I am stunned neither Brady Quninn's courageous 18 yard pass reception nor his equally courageous chop block on Terrel Suggs made the list...

The tuck rule and the fumbled snap? How are those good plays let alone two of the "best" plays? I think "memorable" is the word you're searching for, yahoo.

Simpsons Giants did it. Superbowl versus the Ravens. Unfortunately, they proceeded to get their asses handed to them, so it certainly doesn't belong here.

I can't really argue too much with the list, they're all definitely memorable plays. I'd probably move up the Longest Yard/Kevin Dyson's Super Bowl Stretch/whatever you wanna call it to top 5 at least, if not #3. My only complaint is I'd take out the tuck rule play (the play itself isn't as memorable as the rule it created), and put in Kasey losing the Super Bowl for the Panthers. As a Carolina fan, I remember what a ragtag team they were, how they were only 1-15 a year or two before, and what an amazing turnaround winning the big game would be-only to fail horribly.

/Also applicable is taking out Romo's botched placehold
//I'm a Giants fan, so I personally will always remember this play as long as Romo plays
