You don't even talk about religion by last call. Let alone proselytize in the parking lot.

Authorities say a Cathlamet man wanted to spread religion in a Skamokawa tavern's parking lot but ended up shooting a man in the stomach instead.

A Wahkiakum County Superior Court judge...

Did this take place in a fantasy novel?

You gotta love the "Sovereign Citizen" nutbags -- they make birthers and truthers look like the Algonquin Round Table. I'm not surprised that one of them would look at last call outside the bar as a chance to win some souls.

A few years back one of them got busted at the State Capitol for driving with a cardboard license plate reading "Sovereign Christian Citizen."

Needless to say he made a huge stink about everything up to and including screaming about how the District Justice's courtroom flag was a naval flag due to it having yellow fringe.

He argued the Constitution gave him right to free travel anywhere and the judge said "Yeah, walk wherever you want, but if you want to drive a car on a state-owned road you need a license, registration and proof of insurance."

Sebade said he went to his Volkswagen van and tucked the pamphlet as well as a .22 Magnum revolver into his pocket.

Does this mean I take a swing at any Jehovahs Witnesses that come to my door? I mean they might be reaching for a copy of the Watchtower, but they may just have a gun.

That's disgusting.

The article fails to mention the religion, but I'm betting it wasn't Islam.

This guy will argue that he's doing "God's work" in court, and be acquitted by reason of insanity.

Sadly, evangelism hasn't been officially accepted as a mental disorder yet.

Last time they came to my house, they brought a little kid to try to soften me up. Fortunately, I was in the SCA at the time, and fully outfitted in Druid's robes. That visit didn't last long.

Remember: Jesus loves you OR I'LL KILL YOU!

" Jesus loves me, this I know, for my handgun tells me so. Shots of whiskey, Jack and Coke; reading what the wise-men spoke. Moses led his people far, now I'm preachin' at the bar. I see you choose the devil's end, so say hello to my little friend! Amen. "

I realize that a lot of our laws in this country descend from English common law, but really, when was the last time we followed it?
Obviously, citing English common law as a reason to, say, not pay property tax or register your vehicle is silly and will never hold up in court (well, except maybe in Idaho...) but these people actually believe that this legal theory holds water?

Sadly, evangelism hasn't been officially accepted as a mental disorder yet.

"Under the Banner of Heaven" explains this issue rather clearly when talking about FLDS trials: if the court says that it's a mental illness to believe that prayer allows a person to directly receive revelations from their god, then it's going to basically declare huge swaths of America (and the world) de facto insane.

Freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion. Last time anyone checked handing out pamphlets is not illegal.

after RTFA it sounds more like a bar brawl with crazy drunk people on both sides.

mr. sovereign citizen was drinking in the bar. probably thought the 2 women were good looking, so he went to his car and grabbed his religious pamphlets and a gun (for some reason) as his "in" to go chat them up. (him being a crazy 73 year old man)

they werent too receptive to that, and probably being pretty drunk themselves, made a loud commotion. as the article said, one woman got his in face and started yelling.. Because this is necessary to do to a drunk 73 year old man trying to talk about God.

Then drunky #3 came out and started yelling at the guy too. Crazy old man pulls gun cause he feels threatened.
drunk guy #3 punches old man.
old man fires gun.
its a white trash party, and all of Fark is invited!

So are we just doing the whole "*insert incident*. Do you *skip A and B for hilarity* C) *insert idiotic option selected*" format for all headlines now. I swear this is like the 3rd one I have seen in the last 24 hours.

I don't usually take the side of pamphlet wielding religious nut jobs, but unless I am missing something, the dude in the article who got shot sounds like he was trying to act like a tough guy in front of the ladies so I don't feel bad for him at all, he had no right getting physical unless provoked with the same.

After rereading TFA, I see that he pulled the gun out first. I should have know better, lol.

You do realize a fair number of Christians would go apeshiat if they did that right? Not to mention strict conservatives restricting his constitutional rights to freedom of religion and right to keep and bear arms to which he committed no crime

Remember second amendment strictly interpreted allows murder when using a weapon. Those who believe in strict interpretations of the law therefore cite federal law as illegal. Of course "arms" isn't just guns in for them... WMD's included.

Pray tell, what legal obligation does anyone have to take these pamphlets? Part of freedom of expression is being free to tell someone to buzz off out of your personal space if you're not interested in what they're trying to sell you, be it a product or an idea.
