President Jacob Zuma's speech on World AIDS Day was viewed as a definitive turning point for a nation where the previous administration distrusted drugs developed to keep AIDS patients alive and instead promoted garlic treatments.

This is the nation that the anti-vax people and homeopathy dumbasses want us to be.

In some ways, Zuma is an unlikely AIDS hero. In 2006, while being tried on charges of raping an HIV-positive family friend, he was ridiculed for testifying that he took a shower after sex to lower the risk of AIDS.

There's a BIG difference between not giving a vaccine for something that kills .01% of the population that gets it and not giving treatment for something that kills 100% of everyone who doesn't get treatment.

Even if the treatment kills 20% of the people, it's still an 80% improvement from 0.

Sounds a bit liberal on the garlic.
I find it best to just give one whopping dose at the start and leave it at that. Works just as well in the long run.

Ya wanna get rid of AIDS? Tossing them to the hyenas would help quite a bit.

AIDs can be eliminated by preventing spread. No reproduction in HIV positive couples. An HIV positive person having unprotected sex with somebody not infected is a felony, if the other person knows and consents or not. It would die off in about 60 years.

Eugenics? Yes it is. And that's a farking good thing in this case.

It's only a difference in statistics, not a difference in principle. It is still people dismissing proven science in favor of faith-based homespun remedies. Though the closer analogy then might be people who eschew cancer therapies in favor of folk remedies.

According to teh google, in the 1952 outbreak of polio in the US, you had a 5% chance of death and a 45% chance of some sort of paralysis. Thanks to that inoculation drive, I was born into a world where, unless I was Amish (they didn't inoculate, and had subsequent outbreaks), I have as close to zero chance as you can get of catching that bug.

Yay for the March of Dimes!

HIV person having unprotected sex with someone not infected already can be (and has been) prosecuted in many jurisdictions. Attempted murder. Murder if they actually die from it.

Most mother-to-child comes from blood swap during birth. It's really not my area of expertise, but apparently it's during the moments of childbirth that AIDS gets transmitted, not during the other 99.99% of the pregnancy. It sounds rediculous, I know, but it's actually true. Giving birth via cesarian section cuts that risk to nearly zero.

T.rex 2009-12-01 01:31:24 PM
HIV is unlikely to break thru the barrier of the placenta, though a baby will automatically retain the antibodies of their mom for a few years before discarding the ones it doesn't need. Antibodies is what defines someone either hiv+ or -.

I'd hope the doctors don't put these babies on the very toxic meds until a few years pass when one can more clearly determine if that child is actually infected or not.

In other words, the baby will test hiv+ for a few years even if he's not infected.

I've never understood how HIV passes during child-birth. I understand that the mom's bleeding quite a bit and whatever. But does the baby bleed such that there is transfer of body fluids. I'm only asking because you seem to know more about the specifics than I do.

You are correct to say that it is the actual birth process (not pregnancy) with presents the danger of transmission to the child, and that c-section is recommended. The mom should not breast feed, and the baby will have an excellent chance of not getting the virus.

Actually it's not. Eugenics is the practice of eliminating "diseased" genes. What you are talking about is simply and extreme form of Quarantine. Quarantines for things like typhoid of other airborne diseases of the past made it OK to lock the infected up to prevent them from spreading the disease, preventing HIV infected people from having sex with non HIV infected people is the same principle.

Treatment is only given once the CD4 count drops below 200 is South Africa so regardless of the baby's status, they have a few years. HIV positive mothers are normally given short term ART preceding childbirth which greatly reduces mother to child transmission (the ARVs greatly reduce the viral load in the mother which in turn greatly reduces the chance of passing the virus to the baby at birth).
Now if only everyone stopped having babies at 15 while having simultaneous partners the virus might slow down.
